Christmas Trolls, by Jan Brett

From Kirkus Reviews

Blond, blue-eyed Treva (The Trouble with Trolls, 1992) teaches a pair of greedy little trolls how to celebrate Christmas: following them in order to find the gifts and ornaments they've snitched from her house, she helps them decorate their home, shows them how to share, and offers them a gift--a gesture they make in return on Christmas morning. The story is predictable but related with appealing directness; and fans will be enchanted, once again, with the lovingly detailed folk/Scandinavian details in Brett's bright, crisply delineated art, especially in the intriguing borders--where the trolls' charming pet hedgehogs are busy with their own related pursuits. I loved this Christmas story as a child, and now as an adult, I still appreciate the story, alongside the beautiful and intricate artwork that lines each page. Very well crafted. A nice story for all ages!

Oh how we loved this book! My boys are grown now, but Jan Brett's books were a 'staple' in our house! If we didn't own them, we'd borrow them from the library. I have recently sent this top rated book to a friend's grandson to celebrate his little sister being born. The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL and always a 'side story' in most all of Jan Brett's books. This one was a particular favorite of my boys. We all loved it!

This is one of our all time favorite children's books. The illustrations are truly spectacular. Even grown ups will want to take a lot of time to study the intricacies of these pictures. The clothing depicted is especially interesting and beautiful. The story is sweet, with a redemption rather than punishment ending. I always prefer when a children's story has a redemption ending. That's a better message to give our children: that everyone can be reformed if given the right opportunities. You'll just get a really happy, warm feeling from this book.Christmas Trolls is also suitable for very small children.

I happen to have read this book to my daughter last night. We save it for the Christmas season and it is one she repeatedly chooses. It is funny and whimsical and offers much opportunity for voice change-ups. It is beautifully illustrated with drawings that do much to enhance the already well told story. My son who just turned 15 years old enjoys the story. Not to say he that he ask me to read it to him, but if he happens to be in the room when we are reading it I noticed he sticks around and gets quite comfortable (I hope he doesn't read this!). I recommend it to all ages because even though the trolls are a little naughty, they are also funny and cute!

I bought the books because it is rare to find my name in a book. The illustrations in the book are excellent. My granddaughter was so excited to have the book for her daughter because the little girl likes to see full illustrations in her books.

Jan Brett books never get old! My pre-K students loved the story of the Christmas Troll! It was a wonderful story about generosity and kindness at Christmas. The beautiful illustrations kept their eyes glued to the pages. I am really glad I bought this for my classroom and to share with my grandson at home!

If you aren't familiar with Jan Brett's work, Christmas is a good time to start with this book. The artwork is superb, with a wealth of small details that will delight younger readers and adults alike. I have my own copy, and bought one for my 8 year old Grandniece. Her mother says she is 'advanced' beyond this reading level, but I say that is undervaluing Jan Brett's inspirational quality.

So much fun to read and look at for all ages. I read this as a bedtime story for a 2-3 year old I was nannying for who loved it. The images are complex and rich, fun to look at for a while. The story is cute and has a nice message of generosity and understanding. A fine book for any time of year.

Arturo and Alma Rivera lived a happy life in Mexico until their beautiful teenage daughter, Maribel, sustains a serious injury in an accident. Unsure if she'll ever be the same again, they migrate to the United States—Delaware, specifically—where Maribel will be able to attend a special school and hopefully begin to recover some semblance of normalcy. But America is difficult for the Riveras—the job Arturo secures to sponsor their journey to America is brutal, Maribel doesn't seem to be making much progress in school, and Alma struggles with English, and trying to become acclimated to a different life."Because a place can do many things against you, and if it's your home or if it was your home at one time, you still love it. That's how it works."The one bright spot is that the Riveras meet Celia and Rafael Toro, who came to the U.S. years ago to escape the destruction and violence in Panama. The Toros are more settled into their American lives, although Celia in particular longs to return home, at least for a visit. And when their teenage son, Mayor, who struggles with self-confidence in the shadow of his more athletic, popular older brother, sets eyes on Maribel for the first time, he finds himself completely in her thrall, and wants nothing more to spend time with her, despite what others perceive as her challenges. As the relationship between the Riveras and the Toros grows stronger, it is tested—as are relationships within each family—by secrets, incorrect assumptions, fears, longing, and struggles. And a number of incidents occur which set in motion a chain of events which will affect each member of both families in vastly different ways.Cristina Henriquez's The Book of Unknown Americans gives a powerful and moving glimpse into the immigrant experience for many Latin American people. In addition to telling the story of the Rivera and Toro families, the plot is interwoven with brief testimonials from other neighbors, each of whom came from a different Latin American country and experienced different struggles and happinesses upon arriving in America. This is a book that makes you think a little bit more about the challenges and barriers people often deal with when coming to America, even legally.I thought this was a very captivating read, and Henriquez is an excellent storyteller. While some of her characters may seem familiar, I thought she imbued them with interesting characteristics and quirks that made them more complex. I read this book very quickly, and found it an emotionally rich story I'm still thinking about.

I choose this book because it seemingly told the story of an immigrant group that seems to be vilified and misunderstood. I wanted to understand and learn about their experience. This book was good, but I do agree with another reviewer who said it should be classified as Young Adult reading. I read this in a few hours. The writing was very simple. There were a few memorable & poetic lines, but not many. The story is told by the point of view of numerous characters. I enjoyed that aspect. The main characters were immigrants from various Central & South American countries, detailing their struggles to assimilate in a smaller city in Delaware. All of the characters lived in a rundown apartment building, and for the most part were close knit and supportive of each other. There was one main story that followed the lives of a Mexican couple and their beautiful daughter, Maribel, who legally immigrated. Maribel suffered a traumatic brain injury in Mexico, and the US was the place where the best schools were, so the family ventured to start a new life in Delaware with ultimately devastating and life altering results. I don't like to give spoilers, but this book is absorbing and a quick, fast read.

I really, really wanted to like this book because I was hoping that it would delve into Latin-American culture and provide a rich telling of the Latino experience in the US, but unfortunately that's not what I got. To be fair, I'd just read the Alchemist which set the bar pretty high. With that said, it didn't really matter. By page 30, I was just counting the pages until it was over.I'm being generous with my rating because I think there are many people who are completely removed from the Latino experience in this country and would find this book interesting and thought provoking. But it's so surface, that you're not going to get any real deep treatment on the subject.Education aside, I just couldn't invest in the story-telling. Several aspects of the book felt like rip-offs of other books (i.e. Women of Brewster Place, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) and it just didn't feel authentic to me. I didn't feel that the secondary characters were woven into the central plot well enough for me to really be interested in their backstory. Their inclusion in the book just felt like an after-thought - something to justify the title.I think the subject matter is one that deserves an entire library section and I'll continue to seek out books that provide me more perspective, but this just didn't satisfy.

This was a heart-rending story from beginning to end. There is a reason for these immigrants being called "unknown". Most people don't take the time or make the effort to know who they are and why they are here. Cristina Henriquez has done a wonderful job of integrating the family stories, showing how people bond when in need. I had no expectations going into the book. I let the author tell her story and was moved tremendously.

I was doing watercolor painting for about a year when life derailed me and I took about 3 months off. When I tried to start back up I felt a bit stuck -- not really liking anything I was making. I started looking for a book with specific lessons. I found a lot that gave general instructions for various techniques but I know I work better with lessons that are more of the "follow along" variety. This book offered the lesson structure I was looking for. I've done a few lessons now and I'm really feeling like its helping me get back to being comfortable with the paints and how they move.My favorite thing about this book is how the lessons are broken out by skill level. If you're new to watercolors and want to get really good, you can start at the beginning and move through the lessons, building on skills as you go. I've found that since I have some experience, I've been skipping around, looking for lessons that include some of the skills I feel like I need to brush up on.

One of my favorite watercolor books! I love Emma’s illustrative style. Each lesson has beginner intermediate and advanced level and the chapters are divided into subjects like flowers, fruits, plants, people, etc. And in the beginning chapter she teaches watercolor basics and materials to use. What I like also is that she tells you what colors to use and how to mix them for each lesson. For a beginner like me, it’s truly helpful. Thank you for a wonderful book Emma!

This book is NOT formatted for Kindle. Ridiculous. Returned for refund - not at all readable. 🤬

This book is full of simple, whimsical exercises in watercolor painting with some fun additions like masking fluid and paper cutting. Emma explains everything in terms that are easy to understand and gives a good overview of the tools of the trade.Do yourself a favor and check out her stories on Instagram so that you can imagine her soft, beautiful English accent as you read through the book 😍

This book is so well done! I first discovered Emma’s work when I purchases a soap with the most beautiful packaging design. I searched and searched for the artist and found Emma. Ever since, I’ve admired her work from afar on Instagram and was soooo excited to learn she was writing a book on how to paint. I pre-ordered here on Amazon and the book has a sturdy hardcover, the paper quality is quite nice, the pages are well layed out with many exercises and detailed instructions. She generously allows us to follow her process and make mini artworks in her style. I also appreciate the tiny tips she sprinkles in along the way. I’m working through this book as part of a mostly daily practice to develop my skills and style. I’m really hoping she works on a gouache version next - hint hint ;)

As a long time fan of Emma's work, I bought this book more to enjoy her illustrations in a non-digital format than for its instructional intent. However, now that I've spent some time with it I'm inspired to give the watercolors a shot. The lessons are approachable and well-organized by skill level. Bonus points for the form-factor and quality of the book itself—it's impeccably designed, compact, and beautifully printed. Well done!

Wow! All of positive praise for this stout book. Before even opening my flawless copy, I got one of my Demco library style book covers and covered it. I do that for most every book I get. I respect the author and the physical book. My picture is Cosmo my Pug, secure and relaxed with me and Joy of Watercolor on my beddy. The binding is tight, no shelf bends. I will buy from this vendor again. The book arrived almost overnight without any “Overnight” shipping charges. I have been doing watercolors, etc my entire life, 68 years, and just now my darling hubby no 2 , who believes in me, said to order what I needed to grow my art. I had painted a picture a few years ago, and thank God I had a great graphics store reproduce it for me. Never did that. My pic on the wall has started to fade, change color. I joined WetCanvas.com and researched watercolors. I sent away for some small sets, and I like the Holbeins very much, for me. These new paints all account for their lightfastness, meaning will they fade on their own or time and light? The permanence was also rated. I am starting to paint color swashes on watercolor paper, learning about the characteristics. In Joy of Watercolor, Emma Block, with grace, guides me into a workspace, materials, workbooks and undertonesthen into mixology. Great watercolor pictures done simply illustrate throughout the 240 page compact 8 x 8” x 1” thick book. Yes, great things come in small packages. I still consider myself a beginner, and some guide books are too complex for me. I discovered that I will need to buy some archival paper if I want to paint a picture for my grandchildren, and a few much better brushes that don’t leave a hairy trail behind on a stroke of color. Ack! Shedding Brushes! I appreciate Emma’s sensibility for how to choose a brush amongst the thousands that are for sale. How to save on paper costs, and allow yourself to feel free to experiment and not be constrained by the price of watercolor papers. I agree with her recommendation to buy a few highest rated colors artist, proffesional quality instead of our old school paints. I have all of mine still, and now I am seeing what the differences are. Emma also provides the way to learn your own style of painting, not copying other pictures, but by really looking for real. Pages and pages with additional tips to guide your handof how to make a watercolor with a background and foreground of colors.I believe this book is a treasure, and will help me gain confidence and knowledge that I can bank on. And, my wonderful husband who told me I should get a few brushes, and paper.

Emma's book is a must-have for anyone wanting to learn more about watercolor painting. She includes lots of helpful information and tips, and separates out each painting project into "beginner" "intermediate" and "advanced." I like that she includes a very basic step-by-step process for each painting, but leaves enough room for interpretation and creativity for people wanting to find their own style. Such a lovely book. You can tell Emma put in a lot of time and thought into it.
