I have a couple Bible atlases (the Holman is also superb, especially for the narrative), but for the purpose of simply looking up locations, this is the best I've ever seen. Here are the strengths:1) Huge format, 15" x 10". This means that those myriad locations aren't jammed into a tiny space in the back of your bible -- if the index says "B5," you can actually find it.2) National Geographic maps. Nothing more need be said.3) Complete index.4) Brief narrative and some useful charts opposite each map. Some of the narratives are "Sunday-schoolish," but that's OK.5) Surprisingly good binding. I don't know bindery terms, but this is heavy, durable paper, stitched into three folios, and glued to a very heavy paper cover. For the price, I was expecting cheaper paper and glue only. With reasonable care, this book will last a good while.6) Price, price, price! Buy one for yourself, one for the church library, and one for every Sunday School room.Weak points are very minor, and don't detract at all:1) I can't imagine ever needing, or being interested in, a map of "Ezekiel's Vision of 12 Restored Tribes" (map 11).2) Maps 9 & 10, David/Solomon's Jerusalem and Second Temple Jerusalem, could easily have been put on a single page. I would love a map of modern Jerusalem, overlaying the ancient sites.3) Any attempt to put all of Paul's journeys on a single map, as here, is inevitably confusing. I would prefer a smaller, separate map for each.This is an amazing value: it belongs in every church, and on every Bible student's shelf.

A very clear, detailed set of maps of various eras in the Biblical lands. They are big enough to be useful in small groups. Yet they are not to big for individual use. Frankly, I have not seen such a large and detailed set of maps since I was a seminary student. The price was incredibly low for such a complete set of maps.

I am currently studying Kings and Chronicles. The map helps me to understand where the places are and has bible references with the area. Nice.

The maps in the CEB Study Bible are wonderful. As a result, when I discovered that this book was available, I ordered one. With the information given telling what each map is illustrating and which Bible book it can be found in, I find myself using the maps more than I ever did before. I attend an adult Bible study that has been meeting at 7 AM every Wednesday for breakfast and in depth study. The book is wonderful to use there because of the oversized maps and the strong material that they are printed on. I think every church should have one of these books available in its library.

I love the bible. I love maps. I used to love National Geographic (and this is from that time). It will be great to help me explain the intertestimental period when I teach youth Sunday School this week.

Love my Dutch oven. I love cooking with it. Tonight it holds apple crisp.

This Dutch Oven Cookbook is great for beginnerd and offers helpful tips and good recipes. Instructions for regulating temperatures and judging fire temperature are valuable and will help prevent common learning errors.

I bought this book to use and to learn from and to teach with to the scouts. I found it to be just a blaa and not to great. but in all its not bad nor great.

When you look at this book, the author's photo on the back cover will be familiar to owners of dutch ovens from Lodge Cast Iron. He and his wife also appear on Lodges' cooking accessory pamphlet which comes with every new dutch oven from the company. He has written a good guide and cookbook, and done it well, I might add. A complete table of contents, chapters on care & handling, tools & accessories, heat sources, cooking techniques, even competition cooking, large group cooking & catering tips and dutch ovens in food storage programs are covered. Calling on his experience, he shares tips and advice that are thoughtful and practical, such as: read the rules BEFORE you get to any competition you are planning to cook in, prepare as much as you can before the day of a big party you're cooking for, and try to get a good night's sleep the night before. All sound advice that can be overlooked to your regret. Of course, there are recipes, more than eighty of them, well organized by chapters. One chapter each for vegetable dishes, sourdough recipes, breads, desserts, even a separate one for pies, with a pie crust recipe and other good tips. There are, of course beef, pork, chicken, and lamb chapters, even if lamb has only four recipes. (Have you ever looked for recipes for lamb? - In a dutch oven)? Whether you are a novice dutch oven cook or a seasoned sourdough, you can get good ideas and advice from this book, it should go into your collection. Lynn is a winner of cooking competitions and a good teacher, to boot - I'd like to meet him someday.

I was a nerd 1975-2003 in the L. Ron Hubbard staff writings category.So Janis' much anticipated book (s), intertwined with Hubbard's writings of the same period she writes about in her two books, just helped rewrite and revise that history in my mind.Hubbard turns out to be a big cry baby. Janis just lays down irrefutable first hand, day by day, stories of his life, when she was one of his Commodore's Messengers.The only "OT" (supernatural event) she witnessed was one time he quietly did a sort of mind telekinetic concentration to project (supposedly) his will over a long distance, to ameliorate some ongoing tragedy occuring elsewhere on earth.Hubbard never soul-fly, never in the day to day events of her years at Hubbard's beck and call, waiting in the hall outside his office, to carry messages for him, never did she witness by him or anyone else, any obviously supernatural event. Coincidences here and there, of course, but no soul-flying, no mind over matter, no ashtrays flying around for Hubbard to tap his KOOL cigarette ashes into, no, the Commodore's Messengers had to carry the ashtrays for Hubbard to tap his ashes into. He was unable to move a single ashtray with his mind. (This is somewhat of an ongoing inside joke, when it has been long revealed the Commodorie's Messengers had to carry Hubbard's ashtrays, since the beginner Scientologists on one of their training levels do a training drill called "TR-8" which they shout at ashtrays and demand the ashtrays rise into the air, but in reality, no one of course ever makes the ashtrays physically rise my their mind power).The biggest lesson of Janis' books to me, a long term hopeful dupe of the Scientology movement, was that Hubbard displayed no supernatural powers, never, not once.The book was truly sobering and history revisionism in a positive way.Thankyou eternally Janis Grady Gillham.

I just finished reading Janis’s second book and I can’t praise it enough.She takes you on her journey of mental and physical survival of the world she experienced when she personally worked for years directly with L. Ron Hubbard. I was there on the Apollo during some of these years and I was shocked and blown away as to how much I didn’t know about and I knew a lot. She sheds new insight as to who he really was. It is a real life horror story of a child surviving while working next to one of the world most notorious narcissistic paranoid demagogues.

This book is a rare look into Scientology in the 70s from a unique perspective. The detail of life on the "flagship" Apollo as L. Ron Hubbard travels from port to port and eventually back on to American soil. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Scientology.

USED this edition way back in culinary school. The recipes, formulas, conversion data all work quite well. Wayne has put out several excellent books, Cooking, Baking, Garde Mange, Advance cooking, I recommend to any professionals, students, home cooks that put in the time to understand the material. I lost my copy and was able pick up this same edition for a good value. Many versions have come out since but contents still valuable and is a good led into newer versions. More current editions are costly so until I'm running another professional kitchen i will use this book as a review material and wont be concerned about its print date, the book is solid, cant say i can recall the base recipes or technical instruction ever failing. Baking formulas are never 100% fool proof but if a fix can be had, that solution will be in here somewhere. If your not ready to fork all the cash for newest one, any of the older versions will be money well spent.

This book has taught me so much about baking. It is what everyone needs to take their home baking from mundane to extraordinary, I have used it so often (either the recipes them selves, or as a base and then I create my own) I can't even remember. I did just make their frozen mousse (custard base) which I flavored the first layer with vanilla and the second with rhubarb puree (I made) and put a thin sheet of their devils food cake recipe as a base.... my guests all wanted me to teach them how to do it when they tried it. Hands down, my favorite baking book (I have about two bookcases full!!). Enjoy!

This review is written by the person I purchased the book for:This text/formula source book for bakery and bakers is a replacement for my original, well abused, loved and used text book from culinary school. I preferred to purchase the original edition so that I did not have to re formulate all the high altitude adjustments I have made with the formulas. I admit that theory and aspects of baking evolve and change over time, with introduction of new gadgets and modified ingredients, as the following editions of this book attest to. But for me, this text and its theoretical aspects, and unique layout for the baking formulas, remain true and applicable today. This is not your day to day home bakers book. This is full scale, bakery use formulas.

This was purchased as a used item, but was as good as new when I received it. Since it is the prior edition, I am sure that there are some updates that I would benefit from, but the bargain price makes it hard to pay a huge premium for formulas and techniques that have not changed much in 100 years. Nicely organized, but it does require that you know your way around the kitchen. Would not recommend for beginners. Buy it to get the vocabulary and the techniques then create whatever you want.

I was assigned this book for Culinary school, and it certainly is one of the strongest textbooks I have from my studies. Perhaps equal parts theory and formula, the book is a fantastic resource that I still flip into in my career life as a pastry chef now. Also, you can't beat Amazon prices over those at the school bookstore.

I use this book on a regular basis. It has taught me a lot and helped me improve my baking. One thing I have noticed, however, is that the ratios aren't always correct. There is also discrepancy between the U.S. measurements and the metric measurements.

This has been my textbook in a college baking class for the last 3 months. I have loved reading it for my homework and studying it.If you're a home baker it works out nicely as well. It has the measurements in oz and lbs, so a scale would be handy, but it has a conversion chart in the back if you do not have a scale.Great pictures and wonderful recipes. Must try the donuts in this book! They are wonderful.

He stipulates that he is not a believer and that his ambivalence about writing this historical novel lasted for years. However, at some point in his life, he became enamoured of and obsessed with cathedrals, and visited many of them prior to putting words to paper. The novel occurs within the context of ecclesiastical versus imperial power, as well as during the Civil War between King Stephen and the empress Maud. This setting is similar to the situation during which the Brother Cadfael novels occur.As mentioned in the title and the comment above, the overarching them of the book is the decades-long building of a cathedral at the Kingsbridge Priory, amidst much corruption, political manipulation, slaughter, and evil aimed at Prior Philip's Benedictine monastery. However, Follett has created a novel that possesses stories within stories within the primary theme. In it, we meet some of the most loving, if sometimes eccentric, people, along with destructive, power-seeking, and envious ecclesiastical and political figures. Follett does not spare anyone her or his weaknesses and faults, including the most significant protagonists. Nor does he cease to decry the sheer brutality of Earl William and Bishop Waleran Bigod, the primate of Kingsbridge.The author creates a cast of many protagonists as well as antagonists who are central to creating destructive challenges for the Prior to build the cathedral. Church corruption is made clear, as is the use of political people and men-at-arms to effect the plans of Bigod to destroy Philip. Follett has clearly done considerable research, and blends historical persons with fictional characters very well.At times, I thought the author could begin to tie up the narrative but he elected to create yet one catastrophe after another. In the beginning of the novel, the writing could be described as simplistic, but it evened off later into a respectable and engrossing narrative. If one is interested in Medieval history, the role of Church and State during this era, and a plethora of characters, plots, and subplots, this book is recommended. One gets a sense of monastic living, the lives of serfs and peasants, and the overall life of clerics in this work. In addition, the age-old themes of good and evil underlie all the dynamics in the story.

I once read an interview by one of my favorite indie authors, Matt Schiariti, and he listed this book as his all time favorite. I bought this book later on this year, but put off reading it because IT IS OVER 1000 PAGES - OH MAI GAWD!But, wanting to look cool I decided to give it a try. Honestly, it didn't sound like anything I'd be interested in... so I didn't have any expectations.And then I started it, and whoa man. I got sucked in.There's so much drama in this book. Right when you think one thing is resolved, something else pops up. Oh, and I cried. I don't even know how many times. I also lost a lot of sleep.Despite the amount of pages, I flew through this book.This takes place over an amount of decades with lots of characters. But they're all written so well, even the ones that only show up for a couple pages, that they are all distinctive. And there are so many intertwined stories, but there wasn't any times where I was confused about what was going on.After finishing it, I brought it to my dad and told him he has to read it. I very rarely make recommendations to my father. (This is the second book I've told him to read in the last five years.)Major thing to point out - the woman in this story are ah-may-zing. Yes, it's historical and things were different back then. But they were all written as strong, independent, and Ellen was totally the most sane character in the entire book. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough focus on her.I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes drama and has any interest on 12th century England.

It's hard to believe that the same author that wrote one of the great books of all time, "Pillars of the Earth", also wrote this book. It's start out really, really poorly and I almost put it down before I had read 200 pages. But I had read the first two in the trilogy and I was interested in the history of the era, so persevered. It gets better but the issues still remain.The reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 is the historical fiction aspect. This is where Follet shines. He does a good job of explaining the detail and background of events that, though I lived through them, I was young enough that I didn't know these details. But even here, while duly recording history, Follet's political bias' colour the narrative - whose politics he agrees with and his interpretation of events definitely sway the pure facts of the narrative. He is especially harsh and critical of the Kennedy brothers in contrast to the view of most contemporary historians.But the worst part of this book, the hardest bit to suffer through in order to get to the good bits, were the purely fictional characters. This is meant to be a sweeping generational novel where the real hook for the reader should be that we care about these families as they live through these times. But in 1145 pages, Follet cannot do better than to give us cardboard cutouts with no soul and some of the most trite, insipid dialogue I have ever had the displeasure to read. We should be crying and laughing and sharing these monumental events with these characters (because, of course, Forrest Gump-like, they all just happen to be right in the middle of everything through all the decades). But instead they are just passive observers and we don't care at all about them.Even worse, Follet treats the reader like a dunce who can't remember from chapter to chapter people and events, constantly repeating what this person did, or who they are. And repeating the background of people, events and places multiple times. This book could have been cut by at least a third in length if these repetitions were eliminated. There is a cast of characters at the front but I never once had to check it, as I often do in other similar books, because I keep getting told even what I remember every time a character shows up again. The other device I found really irritating is Follet's practice of telling us about a historical event followed by a comment like ". . . George thought" or someone else thought. Not a true experience of the event by George, just something like George is watching this event unfold on TV (say the Berlin Wall coming down) and something about the wall, and then "George thought this was great" or something equally trite.Writing this review, I now want to change my rating back to 2 stars as I remember how irritating the fictional characters were. But I did get swept up in the story and the historical parts were interesting and well written. I am surprised by all the 4 and 5 star reviews of this book, maybe other people did better at ignoring the weakness of the main characters. I have read all of Follet's historical fiction novels and, while some were better than others, this one is by far his worst.
