well done book, I got some good ideas. I have a small city lot and also have some physical limitations, so some things in the book are not possible for me, but I am just going to use basic ideas and build miniature size medicine wheels that still provide me with the sacred space and sacred energy that meet my needs.

I'm taking my time reading this book so I don't really have anything detailed to say about it's content. I meant to read it as I do many of my books, but there are always those that make one stop and ponder and this is one of them.I actually bought the book for the herbal information, with an eye to maybe creating a garden in our small patch of a yard and found that, as written, it is a meditation in itself. So I'm treating it as such because the information is provided in this quiet, serene approach that draws ones total attention and focus.A lovely, well-written book; worth taking my time to read.

I bought this for my mom who made a 30 ft by 30ft Medicine wheel and she used this and one other book as a guide and inspiration. It is absolutley beautiful and has a beautiful energy in it thanks to the ideas in this book.

I built a Medicine Wheel in a garden area I wanted to re-do recently and then saw this book. I have experience in different herbs and plants and thought I could make a good one. In fact, I did. However, I bought this book thinking I could get more ideas. I was right. This is a book I refer to often. Daily, when I first received it. Very informative. The business interests from the future, namely NBC and its parent company General Electric, plan to utilize their time travel technology to allow them to transport a television crew back to the time of the Crucifixion at Golgotha. With the intent of sweeping the TV ratings, studio executives are transported to 96 AD in the form of holograms. St. Timothy is their main contact; the executives spare no expense to help St. Timothy prepare his Gospel. Apparently, a mysterious hacker has accessed history at its core and is erasing all other historical documentations of Jesus and his early church. So, St. Timothy must negotiate with self-serving holograms from the future. At times, he will have two holograms of the same person in his room, sent back from the future, but from ten years apart, so their holograms will be of varying quality.Gore Vidal takes a cynical and heretical view of religion and emphasizes Christianity's objectives as self-promotion in pursuit of the all mighty dollar. St. Paul is a charismatic marketer who rolls into a town with his dog-and-pony show. Sometimes, he is taken in and provided large sums of money, other times; he is nearly stoned to death. Vidal makes references to Saint Paul's Holy Rolodex of names used for fundraising and of Jesus' attempt to lower the Prime Rate as the real reason for Jesus' ousting of the money-lenders from the temple.With the aid of worldly knowledge he gains from a television that is transported back through time, St. Timothy transforms from an innocent apostle's assistant to an aggressive deal maker. This book is inspiring and informative. It takes the reader behind the scenes of an author and chronicles his artistic awakening and the beginnings of his creative output. At Makerere University College, a famous institution in Kampala, Uganda, Thiong'o found his calling as a writer, a weaver of dreams. His early disappointment when his winning play was not produced at the Kampala National Theatre was followed by many triumphs. His writing output as a student is impressive--novels, short stories, plays, essays, and numerous published journalistic articles. In the background, colonization was ending. He entered Makerere as a colonized person; he left as "a citizen of an independent Kenya."

I truly enjoyed reading this book; so much so, that I finished reading it in two business days. I truly enjoyed getting deeper and first hand insight into how an African experienced the period of transition from European rule to independence. And, I never realized the status of Makerere university.

Excellent memoir by the author who is long overdue for the Nobel prize in literature. He writes about history, colonialism, and his personal coming of age with nuance and inspiration.

This is a heavy, weighty book - and yet utterly fascinating.The blurb says:"Birth of a Dream Weaver charts the very beginnings of a writer’s creative output. In this wonderful memoir, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o recounts the four years he spent in Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda—threshold years where he found his voice as a playwright, journalist, and novelist, just as Uganda, Kenya, Congo, and other countries were in the final throes of their independence struggles."Which seems simple enough, but is not.Ngugi wa Thiong'o (mostly referenced as James Ngugi in the book) writes in depth about the politics of the time - from 1959, when he first entered Makerere University College as a subject of a British Crown Colony until 1964, when he left as a citizen of an independent African state - his birth and growth as a writer being deeply affected by and entwined with the struggle of the African countries for independence. The things he describes are at the same time foreign - so much blood! So much oppression - and yet familiar; Malaysia's struggle for independence and the continued impact of British colonialism gives me, as a reader, a certain shared basis of understanding - or so I would like to think. [It would also seem that the Malay Sultanate may have had a larger mitigating impact - influence, maybe - on the amount of power the British were able to exert in Malaya than I had previously realised. Or the white/black relations are more convoluted and strained than I can comprehend.]As a writer, it's fascinating to discover how the events of the nation affects Ngugi's growth as a writer - both directly, in terms of what he feels led to write about, and indirectly, in the rules, restrictions and opportunities given him to write and present his work.Even if you're not a writer, Birth of a Dream Weaver would be a valuable read for those interested in politics, race relations and history.Note: I received an e-arc of this book via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
