About the Author

Jonathan Engel is professor of health policy and management at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, CUNY. He has taught previously at Seton Hall University, the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, and at the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts. He served as a staff historian on the President’s Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments, and as the lead author on multiple HIV needs assessments for the city of Newark. In addition, he has conducted strategic design projects for the Kings County Hospital Center, the United Neighborhood Houses of New York, the Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families, and Creative Cities International. Pros: excellent summary of the obesity epidemic and the systemic changes we will need to combat it. He nicely summarizes the medical information on obesity, albeit with some sensationalism (I am a physician so feel qualified to make that assessment). I especially liked his descriptions of recommended policy changes, which I think are outstanding and demonstrate a good grasp on the political landscape as well as the science.Cons: I took issue with some of the language he uses describing poverty, including inferring that people in poverty bear some blame for "bad choices" (although he also acknowledged systemic inequities). The fat acceptance movement is dismissed as an after thought not worthy of consideration, rather than a movement that has brought up valuable objections to diet culture. Finally, a writer as good as this should not have to resort to referring to feminists as "man hating," but here we are. Involving a few more female editors in the writing process might strengthen furniture books.

The author does an excellent job of showing the reader how a complex combination of factors have led to our nation's obesity epidemic. Willpower is not enough.Eat less and move more. To eat less while remaining healthy, I suggest intermittent fasting while on a mostly wholefood plant based diet. The author spoke about how refined carbohydrates like sugar and white flower are devastating to one's health, but didn't focus on healthy carbs like greens and legumes. High fiber intake helps with satiety and health.The author emphasizes the need to improve your environment for healthy choices. For example:"Education does help but not nutrition education. Rather, the most effective education is more akin to behavioral therapy: training people to contort their personal surroundings into less obesogenic environments. This involves :Eating at home moreUsing smaller plates,Leaving serving dishes on the counter rather than at the table.Eating with friends,Avoiding processed foodsTurning off the TV during mealsEating foods with more complex flavors.I learned how limited willpower is in combating obesity. Rather than avoid bad foods, structure your kitchen to have healthy foods available at all times combined with exercise, proper sleep, and meditation, and food journaling.Not easy.

There are few tasks that offer so much mathematical value yet require so few instructions as Which One Doesn’t Belong? You see four mathematical objects. You ask kids, “Which one doesn’t belong?” You help them negotiate their overlapping and conflicting answers, developing vocabulary and the capacity for argument and abstraction along the way. That’s it. You can find loads of great WODB prompts online but you can’t find Christopher’s unique presentation, narrative, and teacher’s guide, which is its own kind of graduate-level course in pedagogy. A MUST-HAVE if you teach math at any age I think.  The book is a picture book to use with kids along with a Teacher's Guide that is really a professional book by Christopher Danielson (whose website is also brilliantly amazing and one you'll want to visit often if you are a math teacher.) Which One Doesn't Belong? is a book of conversation starters around geometry.  Each page of the picture book gives readers 4 shapes and asks the questions, "Which One Doesn't Belong?"  I know this opener and love it and have used lots of the resources on the websiteWhich One Doesn't Belong? and other resources and I've always found the routine to be a good one for math learning and supporting conversations around math. But there was so much I didn't know!  This teacher guide--which is not so long but long enough to have depth and lots of new learning--helped me to understand how much more powerful this routine could be if I were more intentional as a teacher. The focus on geometry is interesting to me because it is an area of math teaching that I need to learn more about.  The book has an entire chapter called "How Children Become Geometers". This chapter helped me see the big jump kids do from elementary school to high school geometry and how much better we can do to help them build understanding by understanding the levels of understanding kids have and build around geometry. The book is not a teacher's manual. Instead it is a way for teachers to use this routine in ways that empower students. Christopher Danielson shares language he uses when he introduces Which One Doesn't Belong. He shares examples from classrooms and he helps us better understand how children make sense of geometry through inquiry. He also puts the teacher in the decision-making chair as he invites us to make our own decisions about which pages to introduce to children when.  He also has tips for creating your own WODB set.  I love the answer key in this book.  The thing about this WODB sets is that they are designed so every answer could be the correct answer. So the answer key shares insights kids may notice about each shape and how they might respond.  It is a great resource and a great place to understand how to create your own sets (and help kids create their own.) I love so much about this set of books. We had a conversation around the first page of the picture book last week and it was incredible. I introduced it as Danielson suggests in the book and we could have gone on for a very long time with ideas and thinking around these 4 shapes. I am excited to see where the conversation goes over the next several months.  This was a great way for me to take a routine I know and really deepen my understanding of it which will help my students.  Not only that but it helped me understand geometry in general and I now see the connection between this and several of Danielson's blog posts. I can't recommend this book enough.  If you are interested in inquiry based thinking and routines that empower kids AND if you want to learn more about quality talk in the math classroom, you need this book immediately! A Year of Reading Franki Sibberson  I received Danielson’s shapes book Which One Doesn’t Belong (WODB) with anticipation. I had been noticing Twitter activity on the math twitter blogosphere around the hashtag #wodb, and I was curious. The picture book includes a teachers’ guide, which I found valuable, especially the chapter on how to use the book in the classroom. It also explains the progression of a student’s geometry thinking, gives tips and examples of how to guide conversations, and defines some geometry terms to give rigor to my own knowledge. I referred back to the teachers’ guide many times when using the book in classroom settings. Danielson writes, “I made this book to spark conversations, thinking and wonder” (p. 36). He has definitely succeeded. I enjoyed using this book to facilitate conversations with first and fourth graders. Students were engaged and were eager to communicate their ideas and listen to others. I noticed improvement in their ability to craft mathematical arguments in support of their choices. In the end, the fourth graders composed their own set of shapes to challenge others with “which one doesn’t belong.” I also shared the book with colleagues and even brought it out at a family party. This bold-color shapes book is, as the author had hoped, “a resource that can make a meaningful contribution to geometry instruction” (p. 16) but can also reside in an elementary school library. It allows for meaningful conversations, unanswered questions, and deep dives into the subtle and complex similarities and differences between shapes. —Laurel Pollard, Hanover Street School, Lebanon, New Hampshire.  I recently had the privilege of sharing Christopher Danielson’s book Which One Doesn’t Belong with my 5th grade math classes. Each page in his deceptively simple layout has four different figures. He asks the readers to choose “which one doesn’t belong” and tell why. There’s also an accompanying teacher’s guide, with teaching ideas across the grades from kindergarten to high school. (Look inside the guide here.) I thought the WODB activity might generate some interesting conversations and serve as a review for our geometry unit which we were concluding. So we gave it a try!   Excerpted from Which One Doesn’t Belong, Teacher’s Guide (Stenhouse Publishers, 2016) Some of our observations Even though the book says “every answer can be correct,” my students had a hard time believing that two, three, or four different answers could all be correct. We decided to find out! We started off with the first set of figures and I asked everyone to think silently about which figure didn’t belong. I called on Noah to share his thoughts. Noah chose a figure and explained why that figure was different than the rest. Sarah quickly chimed in saying, “I disagree! I think the third figure doesn’t belong.” She gave her reasons for choosing the third figure. After several of these disagreements, I asked the students to think about why they disagree. I asked them if they understood Noah’s reasoning. They all agreed that, based on Noah’s reasoning, he was correct. They also agreed that Sarah’s reasoning was correct. One student then said, “You mean we are all correct?” The conversation had reached a turning point. As we explored more sets of figures, I didn’t hear, “I disagree” or “I think you’re wrong”. Instead, I heard “ Wow, I didn’t think of that” and “I saw something different”. A WODB chat at Hibbett Middle School Another observation I found very interesting was how students borrowed vocabulary from one setting and tried to apply (maybe misapply) it to a new setting. Have you ever heard of a scalene quadrilateral? Neither had I! But I knew what the student meant, and so did the rest of the class. When I asked him to explain, he said a scalene triangle is a triangle with all three sides having different lengths. A scalene quadrilateral, therefore, is a quadrilateral with all four sides having different lengths. Makes sense, doesn’t it? But, is it mathematically correct? I don’t know. My students gave me some pretty good arguments justifying their reasoning! We decided we needed to do some research on the word scalene. Does it only apply to triangles? Planning for next year I plan to continue exploring this book and use it again next year, but with a few changes. I think it would be very beneficial to do this activity first, as a pre-assessment to our geometry unit. What do they already know? What misconceptions do they have? At the conclusion of the unit, I would like to repeat the activity and see how their answers and explanations change. Will I see any growth in their vocabulary? Will they notice new differences based on the properties of the figures? I think it would also be very interesting to have the students write their own reflections. Did they find this activity interesting and why? What do they think they learned from this activity? My classes thoroughly enjoyed this book and our conversations about shapes. It generated deep thinking and brought up a few questions that we are still wondering about. In a good way! Great book for having conversations about mathematical shapes for kids and adults of all ages! Further, this book nicely models how to have open-ended conversations. Math is not black and white and it's not always about getting to the one, correct answer. The language of mathematics is beautiful, open-ended, and full of contradictions and opportunities to argue. This book embodies that while disguised as a children's shape book.

Love the idea. Can be a springboard for a good discussion on geometry. Also an effective way of reviewing definitions and properties of polygons and other geometric figures. Have used in class to illustrate a part of math where there could be more than one correct answer.

This book is AMAZING. I use it in learning center for students with mild/moderate learning disabilities, and it really helps boost participation at the start of sessions and it's great that everyone can be right...as long as they justify their answer. I've also enjoyed talking it over with my husband and family members. It's a FANTASTIC book and what a fun concept that can be applied easily to other areas like numbers, equations, graphs, etc...not just shapes! I highly recommend this book to anyone!

I love this book. It's such an awesome way to engage with multiple kids of multiple ages alone or together. They can each come up with their own answer for each page and share their thinking and there's no real right or wrong and everyone is engaging in terrific thinking. Super fun for grown-ups too and allows us to see how kids think and see things we sometimes miss.

This book is amazing! Every classroom and family should have a copy. It promotes great discussions and supports ways of looking at things from different perspectives. Wow!!!

This led to very fun and in depth conversations with the family. It helped our 5 year old develop language she was learning at school and think about different properties of shapes. We were shocked at some of the ideas our two year old shared, and it even led to discussion between myself and my husband. Totally worth getting for a family with kids 2yrs-12yrs?

I read this book to my 5/6 compacted math kids and they loved it! The idea of there being no wrong answer as long as you can provide solid evidence for year reasoning is a great one! My kids loves the Which One Does Not Belong idea so much they started creating their own on Google Slides!

I've been looking at the stars for over 30 years and have a shelf full of books that I use to help people learn the night sky. Other than R.A. Rey's "The Stars" this is the one book I tell people is a MUST OWN. I give talks on how to buy a telescope at the local library and at outreach events and tell people that after the fee for joining the local Astronomy club, this book should be the first thing they buy.When people first get a telescope they quickly realize how big the sky is, and how hard it is to find things to look at other than the moon and the naked-eye visible planets. The new scope then sits and collects hats and jackets until eventually ending up on Craigslist or at a yard sale. Please, don't do that. Get this book with a good pair of binoculars and/or your first telescope, learn the sky and find some neat objects that most people will only see via the internet.

Has a lot opf good information about what to look for, and what you cna expect to see when you find it. There is a lot of good general information, and a good section on the moon. My mediocre rating is because it is almost impossible to find any of the objects using the guidance in this book. There are little tiny diagrams of the section of sky you're supposed to look in, but it is very hard to get an idea of the scale of area shown, and the stars shown that should guide you to the objects are poorly chosen and hard to find themselves. I need to use a second atlas with this book to find anything (I use the Cambridge Star Atlas, which is excellent)

An excellent guide for beginners and useful for experienced sky-gazers, too. The illustrations that show how various deep-sky objects will appear in small, 2" to 4" scopes and medium, 8" to 10" scopes (though why skip the 5" to 6" scopes?) are priceless. This is the sort of thing that everybody needs to see before buying a first scope; too many uninformed T-scope purchasers (for themselves or as gifts for kids) have over-inflated expectations regarding what they'll be able to see with a back-yard scope and are often disappointed. This guide is also outstanding in that it makes it quite easy for novice star-gazers to actually find many interesting objects to view without having to use more complex star charts. Yup, this should have been my first recreational astronomy guide years ago, but glad that I finally got it, now.

Started to get this book many times over the years. Just never did. Sorry I didn't and glad I waited. REALLY like this new addition !! It reminds me of some of the old astronomy series that I used to have from Edmond scientific. Very user friendly and wonderful to use.I'm in my 70's and been doing this for alot of years. This book works for me now and it would have been great w a y back many years ago. I think it will do for you too!Don't put it off like I did. Get it now. You'll be glad you did.

If you are just getting started in astronomy at any level, this is the book for you. I am heavily involved with an astronomy club in my area, and do a lot of public outreach astronomy. And over the years, I have seen a lot of different entry level astronomy books. Of what I have seen, this is the all-around best. It might be a little more expensive than some, but IMHO, it is worth every cent. What makes this book so good? Its great introductory text, which gives a brief but comprehensive overview of what it takes to enjoy the hobby of astronomy. It covers all sorts of viewing-- naked eye, binocular and telescope astronomy. The 'other' best part though, is the star charts. A wide variety of objects to look at, grouped by season, are presented. what sets this catalog apart from many others is the wide variety of objects presented. There are naked eye beginner objects and objects that will challenge even a moderately experienced observer. A selection of southern sky objects is presented as well. There is also a detailed guide to observing the moon, perhaps the best I have seen outside of a book specializing on the moon. Lastly, the book is spiral bound, so it will lie flat on a table while you are observing. Now in its fourth edition, the authors have striven to keep this book up to date. Long story short, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

While I have yet to finish reading this book, it is a must have for anyone interested in Astronomy. Especially beginners. I have always had a casual interest but recently decided to take it to the next level. This book goes into a lot of detail about the night sky and things you might not otherwise have known was there. It has opened my eyes to things I have been unaware of for years. The section on the moon is very detailed and well put together as well as other areas of the book. I cant wait to take this book out in the evening as a companion to my stargazing in the night sky. I can tell it is going to be very helpful. This book will not disappoint.

I purchased this book to help introduce me to the night sky and viewing through a telescope. My reason for selecting this book in particular was the great reviews left by other readers. This book lives up to its reputation. It provides basic information about stargazing with instructions for sighting objects in the sky during different seasons. It also provides drawings of what you should see in your eyepiece in both a small telescope and a larger telescope. This is a great book for beginners.

I love this book. It's organized well, gives you a little rating for each object as to how easy it will be to see in your particular style of telescope,and has drawings of approximately what it should look like through your eyepiece. This last feature is really nice; the eyepiece drawings are so much more useful than the pretty Hubble photos when you're out in the field.The book is spiral bound so it will lay flat on your folding table.Straight up, this is a book I would give as a gift to any new or recent telescope owner. I've been viewing for several years, and I still take it out with me when I go viewing.
