From the introduction, My Kitchen Garden:   I started my kitchen garden because I was longing for mesclun, that very particular French salad made of distinctive sweet and bitter greens and herbs. I had been daunted by the thought of growing food, but then, driven by the desire for that flavor from Nice, I turned my backyard into a salad garden for the restaurant. My success surprised and delighted me. I was so excited to have my yard filled with the lettuces I loved.   You do not need a large backyard to start a garden. There are many other underused locations waiting just for you: balconies and windowsills, rooftops, vacant lots—and schoolyards! Tragically, supermarkets have numbed us with the convenience of the same mass-produced fruits and vegetables year-round—to the point that most of us consider a garden unnecessary. Growing a few lettuces or tomatoes is pleasurable, but it is so much more than that—for the future of the planet, it is a necessity that we become caretakers of the land. Fortunately, this is easy to do—and affordable, too.   We have been thoroughly indoctrinated from childhood to think that we can’t grow our own food—or cook, for that matter—because it is too much work and takes too much time, that the climate is not right, or that there isn’t enough room. But that is not so. When I was very young, my family had a victory garden in our New Jersey backyard, and we were not alone. With Eleanor Roosevelt leading the charge with her garden on the White House lawn, more than twenty million victory gardens were planted during World War II, and they produced more than nine million tons of fresh vegetables. I find it incredibly inspiring that the White House now has a kitchen garden again, after too many years—especially now, when so many of us want to grow beautiful edible plants instead of lawns.   The lettuce garden in my backyard moved to a farm long ago, but my kitchen garden continues to grow. The grassy area of my tiny yard gets smaller and smaller every year. But I couldn’t live without my beds of lettuces! Herbs are planted throughout; I depend on them daily. I let rocket reseed itself all over the garden to eat young in salads, with its flowers sprinkled over, or wilted in pasta sauce when it matures. In summer, I grow cherry tomatoes and beans. In fall and winter, I have plots of chicories, kales, and chard. There is plenty of fruit, too—a dwarf apple and a large Gravenstein, a small Meyer lemon, a kumquat, a Fuyu persimmon, a bay tree, and a small thicket of raspberry canes. I tuck edible plants in among the roses, and they are as beautiful as their neighboring flowers. I have a couple of chairs and a small table, and a little grill is set up nearby so I can cook and eat right in the garden. I love to watch the ebb and flow of growth: tiny sprouts as they push up from the soil, blue borage flowers reaching out to bees and birds, the burgeoning harvest as it ripens. I feel connected to the whole cycle of life.   My own path to gardening has been through taste. I am forever falling in love with the fantastic range of varieties available for almost every food plant. Learning to discern these subtleties of texture and flavor—learning to distinguish an Elberta peach from a Sun Crest—is a thrill for me. Using hand-selected produce that is still full of life and vitality, just picked from the vine or pulled from the ground, is what makes cooking not just good, but irresistible.   Gardening has also taught me empathy for farmers and farm workers and respect for the hard work they do growing our food and taking care of the land. It makes us all remember that food is precious, and we are dependent on the land for our survival. It is all about the land. That’s the reason I wanted to write this book. One of my most powerful gardening experiences has been watching the children at The Edible Schoolyard, a kitchen garden planted at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, a public school in Berkeley, California. Every time I see them measuring the vegetable beds for their math class, or harvesting ancient grains out in the garden for a history class, or stealing a taste of a ripe mulberry, I am reminded that there is nothing more transformational than the experience of being in nature. We have been separated from it, but as soon as we dig our hands into the soil and start watching things grow, we fall in love effortlessly—we realize we are a part of nature. I have seen this transformation happen in a school full of teenagers; I have seen it happen at the Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz; I have seen it happen with inmates in a jail. This connection to and respect for nature can be awakened in all of us.   The chapters of this book are filled with the experience of extraordinary farmers and cooks that I have met over the past forty years. It is with their collective knowledge that we have tried to demystify gardening, by providing recipes for cultivation and offering the most enticing dishes we make from our harvest. Each recipe celebrates the flavor of the delicious varieties of fruits and vegetables we have discovered in the fields of our farmer-gastronomes, heritage varietals that have been lost in the industrial farms in this country. Carlo Petrini, the founder of Slow Food International, has said that cooks need to be gardeners and gardeners need to be gastronomes in order to ensure the sustainability of our food system. Thomas Jefferson, our country’s most celebrated farmer-gastronome, is an inspiring example. The garden was the passion of his life. He had an adventurous palate and a profound respect for agrarian values. He planned his garden for the pleasures of the table and combed the world for interesting and tasty plants to grow. I love knowing that he sowed a thimbleful of lettuce seeds every week to ensure there was fresh salad on the table every night. Today Monticello is more than a landmark; it is a national treasury of heirloom seeds, a place of enduring values, where the roots of our democracy still thrive.   Tending the soil, planting, and growing food in this way has had a long and important history in this country. If we let ourselves, we can easily return to this tradition. And what a revolutionary idea: That we can preserve the land by nurturing the vital link between taste, cooking, and gardening! It can be as simple as putting a seed in the ground and watching it grow.

Here's a cookbook that will have you planning your spring garden, even if that means filling pots with mint, basil and chives. Alice Waters' new cookbook had me longing for spring and the chance to plant lettuce and greens by the back door, something that I haven't done in fifteen years but may do next April, thanks to this book. Alice Waters may be a "legendary" cook, but she hasn't lost her enthusiasm for the way fresh food smells and tastes when you pull it from the ground in your own back yard.The Art of Simple Food II is filled with elegant simple ways to use greens and other relatively easy to grow vegetables and fruits. The book follows the seasons starting with the tender greens of early spring through the fruits and nuts of fall, right up to preserving and home canning. While there are some meat, fish and poultry dishes, the emphasis is on vegetables. If you have thought of starting a kitchen garden, or even just growing some rosemary on a windowsill, you will probably enjoy this book.First the sell. This book doesn't pressure you to eat more vegetables, it makes them sound so delicious you find yourself longing for salad or a plate of Sweet and Hot Green Cabbage, Parsley and Anchovy Sauce or Tokyo Turnip Pickles.Next comes the push. Waters would like you to grow your own vegetables . Fortunately, she knows that not everybody is up for a plowing up the backyard. Start small, she advises. Plant herbs, plant some greens. She gives advice on things that confuse most novices such as the soil to use in pots. Then she gets serious and explains composting, plant food. She goes from the very simple to subjects that few home gardeners touch such as cover crops.Personally, I'm on the lazy end of the scale but I have to admit that I know she's right. Lettuce really is a breeze to grow, at least in the Southeast U.S. before the hot weather hits. On the other hand, Waters' cheery optimism when describing growing seasons' outside of California seemed a bit pat to me but maybe I'm not committed enough.This is an interesting book to buy if you want a kitchen garden or even if you don't. I may plant that lettuce next spring, but I'll be glad I have the recipes even when my garden vegetables come from the farmers market.

Growing food for your kitchen is an inspirational experience with this wonderful new book. The author/chef shows what flavorful foods can be easily grown in your garden or on the deck or patio. She then adds recipes for the kitchen. Part II she specifically encourages readers to try growing their own herbs, lettuce, garlic, onions, beans squash, etc. giving them the gardening tips. She shows the art of growing simple food.Part I: Flavor as Inspiration.She follows the seasons and has lovely line illustrations showing the crops: for example different kinds of cabbage, then the recipes. In her tomato section, her favorites were the tired and true tomato varieties: Amish Paste, Golden Jubilee, Brandywine, Juliette, Early Girl, and Sun Gold. The recipes follow each growing suggestion. All the recipes are simple and delicious. She highly recommends growing your own and/or buying locally.Part II: Seed to Seed, Growing the New Kitchen Garden.She starts with soil, preparing the beds, seeds, seedlings, extending the growing season, water, peak harvest, curing and storing, as well as saving seeds.At the back of the book Tools and Resources are listed: Books; Seed and Garden Supply Catalogs (websites included;) Forums and Newsletters; Seed Saving; Urban Foraging and Fruit Exchange; and Cooperative Extension Offices. Glossary and extensive index are included.This is a wonderful new book for the home gardener and cook as well as the professional chef. Growing your own food is encouraged, but buying locally is also suggested as an option. Great addition to your cookbook and gardening library.

If I could give The Art of Simple Food (the predecessor) six stars, then this one deserves five. On occasion I despair a bit because I can't find the ingredients (I don't live in California where EVERYTHING is available!) but I can find enough to come close. And I'll admit that, on occasion, the "simplicity" is a bit convoluted to qualify as simple (to me! only to me!) but then again - worth the extra time and effort. This book, like its predecessor, and like most things that Alice Waters stands for and believes in and shares with us - is pure and wholesome and absolutely lovely. Exquisite recipes and techniques aside - this book is a love song to vegetables and what they should be and can be and ARE when respected and loved and prepared the right way.

A great, go-to book that I refer to as often as The Joy of Cooking, Ina Garten and Anna Pump's insights. I simply love this, and the series.

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my sister. She loves Miranda Hart's humor, has seen her show, and read her other book, Is It Just Me? She began reading Peggy and Me immediately and was enjoying it until she reached page 121. It was at this point that she became aware of a major printing error - pages were missing or skipped. The next page was 154 and this error repeated throughout the rest of the book. I contacted the seller through Amazon and was sent another copy but found the same problem as the first book. Since the seller could not guarantee it would not happen a third time, my money was refunded. Now, of course, my sister is unable to finish reading it. It is a book I am sure Miranda Hart fans and dog lovers will enjoy. It is just a shame that this problem cannot seem to be corrected. I’m hoping to be able to purchase the book in a store so I can check the copy before making the purchase.

I loved this book. It brought together two topics that I enjoy, my love of animals and Miranda Hart's comedy.Miranda does a wonderful job, sharing her stories about her sweet dog named Peggy. Some of the more serious moments deals with, how Miranda was able to handle the disappointments and loneliness that was going on in her life, before and after Peggy became a member of her family. Because of Peggy, she was able to find herself again and probably, because of this, Miranda was able to successively write her sitcom and really start her acting career. It really is amazing, what our pets can do for us and all they want in return is our love and attention.Mixed in with the seriousness, there is a bit of comedy as well. If anyone has been able to watch any of Miranda's comedy knows, she is hilarious. And there is a lot of her comedy, sprinkled through out the story giving it a light touch, to what could have easily been a very serious story.

This book gave me good old belly laughs all the way thru....being a dog owner can relate to the trials and tribulations that Miranda had with toilet training/obedience commands and finally wanting to share the bed. My dog at 12 yrs old has the attitude of' '... íts my bed and I'll let you share if you give me a treat/cuddles..''.in other words he has me wrapped around his wee paws. If you are a dog lover or looking into purchasing a puppy - recommend that you read this book.

You can't! You just can't! Miranda Hart's creative and thoughtful writing is one of a kind and a friendly companion during difficult times. I am all for "heavier" content, both in book and visual media, but there is something to be said about finding pure joy in art. Her TV show is exceptional and so far her books are too. She is an inspiration and just a lot of fun to read and watch, and you will also find contemplative life lessons sprinkled throughout. She shares a lot of honest insights as well. Such fun and cheers!

This book by Miranda I quite enjoyed, but not as much as I thought I would, having watched her episodes on the TV (where she is a real comedian - even laughing at her own behavior). She has certainly made a niche for herself in both TV and book publishing, and if anyone wants a true 'forget where you're at situation' and enjoy a light hearted relaxing book, this is the one for you...

Absolutely loved it! Fast paced, yet so charmingly detailed about the love between a dog and her human! Funny, had me laughing out loud!

If you're a fan of Miranda Hart, you will love this book! It's written in similar style to her first book: Is It Just Me? I could practically hear her voice saying some of the lines. This book makes me want to get a dog!

A little slow going but some funny moments.

This is an excellent book for young teens. I am a thirty year old college student who read this in a class on Native American Fiction and I loved it! It's a coming of age tale of romance and teen angst with the threat of a vampire who turns out to be a really great guy. Terrific read! Drew Hayden Taylor is also a hilarious person! Look him up!

This is the fifth book I bought of Drew's work and just WOW!!! extremely engaging and just so much fun reading. If you haven't read any of his books before you have to just buy one and you'll be hooked!P.S. Drew please put more of your book s on Kindle please!!! I want them all on my kindle!

The Night Wanderer by Drew Hayden Taylor is one of the more unique multicultural selections I have read. Taylor blends European vampire lore with modern Aboriginal culture to create a deliciously creepy tale.Many multicultural stories are often set in the past so that authors can educate readers about a culture. When set in the present, multicultural stories instead tend to tackle discrimination. It’s rare then for a multicultural author to explore genre such as Taylor does with The Night Wanderer. The result is an unusual tale, rightfully labelled as a native gothic romance. True to gothic form, The Night Wanderer contains supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events and a curse. The secretive stranger who lodges at the Hunter home, unknown to anyone in the First Nations community, has existed for over three hundred years. One minute Pierre can be speaking to a character, the next minute he has disappeared without a trace. What’s just as mysterious is that he never shows himself in the daylight and makes a great effort to avoid eating and drinking with others.True to romance form, The Night Wanderer also utilizes overwrought emotion and a female in distress. Tiffany Hunter’s mom has deserted the family, leaving Tiffany rebellious against her dad. Tiffany gets involved with a white boy named Tony, lets her grades slip, shuns her friends, and acts in other irrational ways. As Taylor begins to provide clues to the background of Pierre, my nervousness continued to build. Is he the one killing old-timers and young people? If so, will he kill Tiffany’s grandmother? When Tiffany runs away from home, and is followed by Pierre, what will happen when Pierre catches up to her? While vampire lore and romantic angst might seem like typical teen fare, Taylor blends them together to create a unique moralistic story that, thankfully, does not involve vampires and humans falling in love.Normally, young adult literature is written in first person and, as such, provides immediate and personal connection to the narrator. At times, I missed this feeling in The Night Wanderer. However, there’s also a valid reason for using such a style. A prime example of the third-person omniscient style in young adult literature occurs in The Body in the Woods, where April Henry successfully intensified the suspense in her crime mystery title by switching seamlessly between various viewpoints. Similarly, by allowing readers to see inside the heads of both the peculiar stranger and the Hunter family, Taylor creates tingles. We know that Pierre has killed even those whom he loved. What is his motive in returning to the village of his childhood? We also know that the Hunter family is just distressed enough to have let down their guard. Will this be a mistake?Although not set in the past, The Night Wanderer also does educate readers about modern Aboriginal culture by appropriately depicting a conflicted mix of old and new lifestyles. Tiffany’s family lives on Otter Creek Reserve, but she learns about Nazis and Bolsheviks at school. Her mom had been part of a traditional Native dance troupe but, at the same time, her dad drowns his sorrows over his divorce by watching television. Tiffany’s grandmother still speaks mostly Anishinabe but at the same time has a fondness for pickles. In addition, she relies on plant roots to cure illnesses while also shopping at Walmart for shoes. Even though Aboriginal families have been granted status cards for necessities, Tiffany uses it instead to impress her boyfriend with luxuries such as jewelry. Finally, native mythology is full of mysterious creatures such as wendigoes, but Tiffany and her friends find more relevance to the monsters they battle in video games.One of the members of the diversity committee to which I belong borrowed The Night Wanderer before me, but then returned it saying that she didn’t like to read scary stuff. While The Night Wanderer did cause goose bumps, I appreciated that my apprehension arose from bump-in-the-night chills rather than bloody and gory descriptions. If you enjoy old-fashioned horror, this coming-of-age novel is worth checking out.

In 1992, the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon staged "A Contemporary Gothic Indian Vampire Story," a play commissioned by The Young People's Theatre of Toronto. Directed by Tibor Feheregyhazi, the story was written by Drew Hayden Taylor, who in 2007 adapted it as a YA novel called "The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Novel." Although I wasn't familiar with the original play, I came across the book while researching Canadian horror literature, and was instantly intrigued by the title. "The Night Wanderer" is a coming-of-age tale about a First Nations teenager, Tiffany Hunter, whose family boards a mysterious stranger from the East named Pierre L'Errant. Turns out the man is no longer quite human, and is returning to his homeland after centuries abroad. It's a very interesting premise that unfortunately didn't quite hold up to my expectations--although I suspect the target audience will get much more out of it.The tale takes place in and around a fictional reserve on Otter Lake, in the central lakes region of Ontario. Aside from the odd trip to Sudbury, Toronto, and Ottawa, Tiffany Hunter has spent her entire life within 45-minutes of her home. She goes to high school in the small community nearby, and has a white boyfriend named Tony--although both his parents, and her father, don't approve of the relationship. Much like with many of her generation, she's disconnected from the history of her own people, and is disillusioned about what the future may hold. Things take a supernatural turn upon the arrival of Pierre L'Errant, who was born in Europe but has come to Otter Lake in order to see his ancestral home and reconnect with his roots--or so he claims. He explains that his great-grandfather had been in the First World War, while his great-grandmother was part of a traditional Native dance troupe that had been touring Europe at the time. They met overseas, and settled there. Tiffany and her family buy the story, even though they're quite amazed by the fact that Pierre's features are more strikingly Native than their own--not diluted through generations. He simply chalks it up to strong genes. The family also overlooks his peculiar diet (he's not able to eat any regular food), and his "skin condition" means that he has to avoid sunlight. Therefore, he spends the moonlit hours not eating any food, and wandering around the surrounding landscape. Tiffany finds Pierre to be quite odd, but as her family notes, "he is European after all."That's one of the issues I have with the story: Pierre is just too odd to not raise more red flags. But I digress. Without giving away more of the plot, I will add that there are some good elements to this folk tale, especially regarding Pierre and his attempts to reconnect Tiffany with her ancestors (and the world around her). What disappointed me was that there was not really much of any First Nations lore at all; based on the title, I thought Pierre may have been a 'wendigo', or at least he'd cross paths with more traditional beasts during his nighttime excursions (this is a fantasy tale, after all). But he's simply a traditional vampire of European folklore--which is not a spoiler, really, since this is pretty much clear from the outset.What really stands out is Pierre's story, and the glimpses of his historical journey from Canada to Europe, where he was eventually turned into a vampire. This would make for a very interesting prequel story, so perhaps one day this character will live on in his own tale.The book was also recently adapted as The Night Wanderer: A Graphic Novel, from Annick Press.
