Review

Who'd have dreamed that this essential book could get even better? Beyond the foundational ideas for how to teach mathematics, Marilyn's personal thoughts and insights make this an incredible resource that speaks to all of us. This fourth edition of About Teaching Mathematics needs to be the centerpiece of the library of every teacher and everyone who supports those teachers. --Cathy L. Seeley, NCTM Past President and author of Faster Isn't Smarter and Smarter Than We ThinkI'm often in awe of how versatile About Teaching Mathematics is. Its contents have helped me communicate with parents about effective arithmetic instruction, plan professional development workshops for teachers, and craft problem-based lessons for students from kindergarten through grade 8. After fifteen years working as a math coach, workshop leader, and classroom teacher, it remains one of my top 'go-to' resources for K 8 mathematics instruction. --Nancy Anderson, K 8 Mathematics Coordinator, Milton Academy, Massachusetts; and coauthor of Talk Moves

I have reviewed a lot of homeschooling math curricula and 'living books'. We have a few good puzzle and problem solving books, and we also really like Life of Fred, but "About Teaching Mathematics" is going to make a great spine! Now, I feel like our math program is complete.1. Broad and thorough, covering all all concepts K-8.2. Easy to read, not an excess of information that can tend to weigh us home-schoolers down. This is written for elementary teachers who, as the author said, aren't always comfortable teaching math. There is some classroom guidance that is easy enough to skip.3. There are a lot of fantastic sample problems for each concept.4. Trustworthy, quality. Everything 'rings true' to me. Approaches math as more than computation and exercises. This was surprisingly hard to find for homeschooling.Highly recommend!

Excellent resource for K-8 math teachers and pre-service teachers. I use this book at the college level as the foundation for my elementary math methods class, but it would be equally as valuable to an elementary teacher. Burns stresses big ideas in teaching conceptual math, not by providing a bunch of printable activities for kids to do that can fragment math skills and be just another worksheet, but by providing hands-on ideas using manipulatives and visuals to help kids see the meaning in math. All the activities are set in the context of what good math teaching is, which is clearly explained and emphasized in areas from classroom management to assessment.

I'm replacing a book I left in Taiwan (too much $ to pack and bring back home!) It has great explanations of everyday math, logical progressions and activities that drive home the concepts to the student.

Marilyn Burns' 23 years' experience teaching math is found in this great resource book. The first section is organized in NCTM strands: measurement, probability and statistics, geometry, logic, patterns and functions, and number. The second section (a little less than half the book) is about teaching arithmetic: number concepts, place value, addition and subtraction, mulitplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. Each concept has whole class lessons, independent activities (menu), and assessing understanding. This is a teacher resource, not a curriculum book. Burns' approach is half-way in between the two poles of math education: algorithmic math and conceptual math. Her point of view is "practical," with the teacher in mind....

My daughter is homeschooled . I did o.k. in school--But math for me got alot harder after 5th grade. I really needed a book that would give me info. on not only WHAT to teach but, HOW to teach. This book is going to be such a big help for me. My daughter was in the talented & gifted program at her old school. I want to make sure that she keeps on getting the straight A's that she was getting. This book takes some of the pressure off of me by giving me ideas, activities, and (really important to me) ways to assess my daughter's understanding of new concepts. Because if she doesn't understand it, she will in no way excel. Anyone that homeschools, that didn't get straight A's in math will benefit from this book. I paid $38 for this book and after reading it I would have paid alot more! Marilyn Burns is great!

This is a timeless treasure of mathematical understandings generated by Marilyn Burns and her associates. These activities, coupled with hands-on training for teachers, can make a tremendous difference in the mathematical understanding of elementary and early middle school teachers. Most important in this edition are the addition of Burns' revised thinking on Teaching Arithmetic (part 3), and her compilation of discussions for 40 activities (part 4). These two additions have rounded this meaningful math resource into a powerful tool for on-going staff development.

A gem that helps students acquire math understanding! Fun games that are easily produced, help children build their own conceptual knowledge of math so they can apply it to real-life situations.I'd throw out every math text book ever created & use this instead! We'd have a country of children with much stronger math skills!I use this book a lot in my teaching! It, along with De Walle's book, are my mentors & partners in giving my students conceptual success!

I'm using this new edition to teach a graduate level class in math methods. The chapters are well organized and the math activities and questions can be used in the classroom. I find this book easy to read and understand--no unnecessary jargon for newer teachers. Clear and concise. Love it.
