Princess Fugitive is a strong sequel to Princess companion - and from the villain's point of view, no less!After her utter failure to secure the throne of Arcadia, Ava has practically been persona non grata at home. When she is forced to flee her murderous sibling with her bodyguard Hans, she has to do a lot of serious re-evaluating of her life and take the time to figure out who she is - and who she wants to be. Changing your ways and making amends is far from easy, and Ava stumbles - a lot. But two things she has in spades are courage and stubbornness. And she'll need every bit of it if she wants to get away from her brother alive and then return to take back her family's throne.Only problem is, for that she'll need allies, and she's already burned her bridges.Like all the Four Kingdoms novels, Cellier's characters are very well rounded. The story world is well thought out and realistic. We get to see a lot more of it than we got to in book one, as we spend a good chunk of the story traveling.The romance is a good, slow burn romance of two people who have known each other a very long time and have a good deal of trust in each other already established before the story even begins. I highly recommend all the books in this series. they are well worth the read.
I recently had the pleasure of reading The Princess Fugitive, the second book in the Four Kingdoms series by Melanie Cellier, following the events of The Princess Companion. Since every book in this series is a retelling of a popular fairy tale, The Princess Fugitive was inspired by the story of "Little Red Riding Hood." However, it's quite clear from the book that there was no easy way to convert a fairy tale about a poor little girl visiting her granny into a novel about a cold and calculating princess. The book actually had very little to do with "Little Red Riding Hood" outside of a few superficial elements, including a prized red cape that the main character likes to wear often.I was very impressed by how fast the pacing was in The Princess Fugitive compared to The Princess Companion as well as the heightened levels of suspense. Perhaps that was because it had a more interesting main character. Princess Ava was actually the villain from The Princess Companion, but she goes through a great deal of growth in this book to redeem her past mistakes, making her easy to relate to. The story reminded me a lot of Palace of Lies by Margaret Peterson Haddix, which was also about a calculating princess who learned how to trust after being forced to evacuate the palace. The setting of Rangmeros is very similar to the Lakti kingdom from The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine. Both kingdoms are ruled by a long line of conquerors who prefer going to war over helping their people.The story starts off very exciting with Ava narrowly escaping an attempt on her life and running away with her royal guard to go into hiding from the imminent danger. Her militant upbringing makes her repulsive to her Fairy Godmother, who refuses to help her at first, but does so anyway at the prompting of a higher power with subtle religious connotations. Armed with her new disguise, Ava and Hans take on the role of commoners and join a band of traveling merchants. Among them are two cousins, Sarah and Evelyn, who are complementary opposites. Sarah is outgoing and loves to play dress up, while Evelyn is a tough-as-nails guard who takes her responsibilities very seriously. With their help, Ava learns to open herself up to feeling emotions again and gradually sheds the "wolf" exterior that her father instilled in her.I loved how action-packed this book was from beginning to end. Ava's determination to take back her kingdom against all odds makes her an admirable heroine, and the lingering danger of getting discovered by her attackers at any moment kept me on the edge of my seat. It never got too frightening because her beloved Hans was always at her side to protect her at a moment's notice. Their romance was a lot more interesting than that of the oblivious Alyssa from The Princess Companion. Ava and Hans were both well aware of their feelings for each other but were trained from childhood to repress their emotions due to their responsibilities at court. It made the few romantic moments that they were able to share all the more precious.Since so much of this story was about Ava's learning to trust, it was very important that the characters she met along the way were unique enough to help foster her emotional growth. Sarah and Evelyn fit that bill perfectly. They are main characters in the next novella in the series Happily Ever Afters, which takes place after the events of The Princess Fugitive. Sarah and Evelyn have an adorable sisterly relationship, though they are very different in personality. As soon as Sarah learns Ava's true identity as a princess, she eagerly leaps into all of the benefits a royal friendship would entail and proceeds to immediately raid Ava's closet just as any true girlfriend would do. Evelyn is usually quite serious, but Sarah knows how to get her to lighten up. Evelyn reminded me a lot of Cassandra, Rapunzel's lady-in-waiting from Tangled: The Series.Overall, The Princess Fugitive is an exciting story with an intriguing heroine that is superior in almost every way to its predecessor, The Princess Companion. It has lots of action-packed adventure, fun characters, suspense, and a little mystery. It made me eager to learn more about the many other books that Melanie Cellier has written in the series. If you'd like to read another book that's loosely inspired by "Little Red Riding Hood," check out Blood Red, the novella I wrote in 2013 about a famous actress whose life turns upside down when she learns about the dangerous secrets of her past.
I am thirteen years old and writing under my father's account. I love fairytales, but up until very recently I've not really cared for retellings. Fantasy is more of my thing-- but then I discovered Melanie Cellier, champion of building a believable world with a healthy blend of fairytale magic, fantasy, and best of all Christianity! Well, sort of. If you would count that as an allegory. Princess Ava's journey was a beautiful story of determination, discovery, friendship, true love, and just a dash of the High King's "magic". Ava's redemption actually reminds me more of Helga from The Marsh King's Daughter than Red Riding Hood. But Melanie Cellier is great at weaving fairytale magic into a brand new and wonderfully reimagined tale. I loved getting to see the characters from the prequel to the book, and meeting Sarah and Evelyn was a real treat. I got to the party a little late, but that's okay, because I'm reading all her books! I hope that I can be an author to match Ms. Cellier's skill one day. All I can say is, read this book. You will (probably) not regret it. Or at least try the other books in the Four Kingdoms/Beyond the Four Kingdoms series!
This book was a fun twist on Red Riding Hood, and the characters had the same fun, lighthearted but serious flare as in the first book in this series. I enjoyed the read but found it not quite of the same quality of writing as the first book. There were a few places where I found if very easy to set aside this book for other things, and the twists didn't come as such a surprise, though I wouldn't call it predictable. All in all it was an enjoyable read but not my favorite of the series. If you're buying the series I do suggest having this book to complete the collection, but don't base your idea of Melanie Cellier's work off if it; her other books are much better.
Princess Ava was molded to be cunning and know her way to influence court. However, when someone makes an assassination attempt on her, she is on the run with her trusted Personal Royal Guard.She asks help from her Fairy Godmother, but Ava doesn't see much use in it until she realizes. She is being chased by her older brother.She learns about the High King who over rules the four kingdoms and beyond. She quest to find Him and then follows through with his request.I really enjoy this story of forgiveness and change. It speaks volumes since we are all not perfect and have things in our life that need change.Yes, read this book series!
