About the Author
Author David Baskerville (1918–1986) received a PhD in music from UCLA. His background included staff composer-conductor for NBC-Hollywood; arranger for Nelson Riddle, Paramount Pictures, and 20th Century Fox; television producer for BBC-London; conductor at Radio City Music Hall; trombonist with the Seattle Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and NBC-Hollywood orchestra; Executive Vice President of Ad-Staff, Inc., producer of award-winning broadcast commercials; Executive Editor of Tor Music Publishing Company; and President of Sherwood Recording Studios, North Hollywood.He also served as a consultant to companies in the entertainment industry, such as Walt Disney Productions, and to research and marketing firms, such as Vidmar Communications, Los Angeles.As an educator, Dr. Baskerville created and directed the music management program at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he became professor emeritus. He was a guest lecturer, consultant, or clinician at USC, UCLA, Chicago Musical College, Hartt School of Music, the Ohio State University, University of Miami, and Trebas Institute, Canada.He was a featured speaker at national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference, College Music Society, National Association of Jazz Educators, and the National Association of Schools of Music.

"Music Business Handbook and Career Guide" by David Baskerville and Timothy Baskerville is a textbook that is truly focused on the business side of music. It is so comprehensive that there was advice that almost any creative could use. Each chapter was well laid out in the objectives and information supporting the objectives. It built on each topic from chapter to chapter. As with most textbooks, it would be well-served in a classroom setting but it is organized in such a way that it makes a good reference book as well.
This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to have any part in the music industry. It does a fantastic job of walking you through the entire industry from performing and publishing to management and distribution. It is stunningly comprehensive. A nice add-on to this purchase (and you should definitely purchase it... just hit that Add to Cart button right NOW) would be David Byrne's little industry opus. This ain't no party! This ain't no disco! Quit fooling around and hit that Add button!
Overall not bad but some areas are certainly stronger than others. For example, the beginning of the book has a strong focus on copyright which is great but takes up a lot of space. On the other hand, basic business practices are very lean - one of the smallest chapters near the end of the book. In between there is a lot of general information that tends to cover the basics of licensing, contracts etc...I liked the addition of complete examples and overall the book is easy to read.
