Experimenting with Babies: 50 Amazing Science Projects You Can Perform on Your Kid, by Shaun Gallagher

Review

"Experimenting with Babies is a wonderful book, giving parents a hands-on way to understand their baby's emerging mind.  The experiments are easy, fun, and nicely annotated with the real science behind them.  What a fabulous way for parents to get to know their new child!"—Lise Eliot, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University and author of What's Going On in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life“With the marketplace urging parents to buy all manner of things to make their babies ‘smart,’ Gallagher’s book offers parents a view based in science on how much babies really know and figure out on their own.  Parents will have fun with this book and gain new respect and awe for their babies’ amazing capabilities.”—Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., H. Rodney Sharp Professor, University of Delaware and coauthor of How Babies Talk, Einstein Never Used Flash Cards, and a Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool

Book emphasizes cognitive and behavioral tests that are performed non invasively. There is no information about surgical experiments intended to transform the baby into a post technological horrorbeast capable of dominating the globe. Perhaps this gap will be addressed by a sequel. In any case, this is acceptable if you recognize the inherent limitations of the content.

I started buying this book for friends and family who are reproducing or who have recently reproduced, mainly because the title makes me giggle and the reviews are good. Turns out that it is like crack for new parents who are already fascinated by every burp, wiggle, and wide-eyed blink that emerges from their offspring. It gives them more to do with the infant than just stare at it and make odd, high-pitched sounds. The only drawback is when they want to tell you all about the results of the experiments as if I have read the book and know what they are talking about. They seem so excited about it that I don't want to burst their bubble, so I nod and smile and think about how much sleep I got the night before, and how I went to see a movie at a theater without weeks of planning. Results may vary.

Helpful takeaways following each experiment, but not every experiment is quick and simple. Some require making signs/posters for your baby to view, others playing clips of music or finding certain kinds of toys. In this period of total exhaustion with an infant and toddler, I had hoped they would be shorter and easier activities to fit into our days. I had hoped, too, that they would be activities that were more beneficial to baby (like exercises)--rather than simply satisfying my own curiosities. Without doing many of the experiments, I have read the takeaway following each one, worked to apply the recommendations as applicable, and stowed the book away on my shelf.

I love science and understanding why things work and how. This book explains so much and is in order by age. I flipped through it and its definitely caught my attention.Originally $16, so its worth it for sure!

I wish I'd bought this right before my son was born. It has a lot of things that you can do when you're just getting to know your baby and they don't do a whole lot. Some things for older babies, but most activities are for newborns.

Bought this for my best friend child and it's really cool. My only huge suggestion is that you buy this book when the baby is just born o that you can get the most use out of the book. The baby that I bought it for is 9 mos and we don't have many experiments left to do because we started mid book

I bought this as a sort of gag gift for my future brother in law. It was a HIT! And after reading some of the "experiments" it actually is super cute and useful for a new parent. I am very happy with it.

Gave as a Christmas gift to my brother (a science nerd) as he and his wife are expecting their first child. The book is fun and informative. He thought it was hilarious but also learned some stuff and he told me he would definitely try some of the stuff out that's in the book. A fun gift for expectant parents.
