There's a lot of great things about this book. It has some wonderful creepy stories from Japan, something we don't get a lot of in the u.s. unless it's been butchered and Americanized which makes it completely lose what makes Japanese stories scary, scary. So, this book is a collection of short stories from around the internet in Japan. Creepy pastas, urban legends, those sort of things. Most of the stories in this book are good and fun to read. A few made me stare at my ceiling for a few hours instead of actually falling asleep.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Japanese culture, scary stories, or just wants something new to read. There are a few minor spelling mistakes, but easily ignored and don't take you out of the story. Over all a wonderful book. I'm excited to buy the next two books as well as Tara's newest book, Toshiden.

Reading this book was a lot like sitting around a fire telling stories with friends. The stories are (mostly) very short and organised by theme. They are translations of Japanese urban legends, so anticipate that there will be some loose ends.I first found Devlin while listening to podcasts, and reading her translations is equally enjoyable. If you are looking for some creepy stories to make you jump at noises in the dark, this is a good book for you!

This isn’t a jab against the author. The translation work was done well. This is mainly a jab at the stories found in this book. None of them caught my attention and some of them simply didn’t make any sense.

...because the creepypastas here are so enjoyable. There are some real gems here. I was alone at home all night when I finished this and didn't sleep until 4am because some of the stories got under my skin.

It’s a little bit tough to review Kowabana. It’s a great and thorough collection of supposedly true scary stories from Japan. The variety and sheer number of tales is impressive. However these are stories collected from 2chan Creepypasta and not written by Tara Devlin. Therefore they are mostly very short and lacking in the description department. While I loved many of the premises, lots of these stories seem more like ideas or jumping off points for longer and better stories. A great number of the stories do not have character names, but rather A and B. Having X talk to Y just kind of took me right out of the story. I would love to see these taken and fleshed out more. With characters I cared about, atmosphere, and maybe a few adjectives here and there, some of these tales truly would be terrifying.

This book is a great sampler of Japanese horror fiction. Some of the stories are short and some are long; some are situated in the past while others happen in contemporary times; and some are written very formally while others have a more informal "campfire" ring to them. Worth a read!

A compilation of short stories that leave up to the title. The tales are not gruesome but instill fear with hints of the supernatural that are stranger than fiction. I will be reading the next book in the series. I hope it will keep me up at night and make me not want yo be alone in the dark. For horror, thriller, SciFi fans looking for something short and not so sweet.

Defenately a great read! There's something about this collection that reminded me of how I felt when I read the Scary Stories to tell in the Dark series as a kid. What I mean is that the author speaks to the reader here rather than at them. This simple fact combined with the genuineness of the language in these tales really did evoke that nostalgia.
