#33,443 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I loved this quickie story. It's pure fantasy fun. You know that friend that wants to know everything about you? That's how I felt about Hailey and Gage.I couldn't enjoy this story more unless I was experiencing it myself. My only complaint would be it was too short because I loved these characters and the insta love that is 6 months in the making. Can't wait for book 2. Yes, it's a standalone but I can't wait for their friends to experience a love like Hailey and Gage.

I read this book a few years back and remembered how much I enjoyed it and decided to do a re-read.This story is about a shy, reserved woman trapped in a strippers body. She and her girlfriends are having a get together and notice a man standing in his window across the way completely naked. He notices her as well but they do not act on their instant attraction to each other. The mystery man, who the girls named Mr Tool, becomes their weekly show. He struts his stuff, while working up the courage to ask her out, and she fantasized about him regularly.Very hot and steamy with some laughs as well. Great family dynamics between Gage and his brothers Dylan and Derrick, and their Mum, Barbara. At the time when I originally read this it was the first in the series and none of the others were out, now there are 4 more. I will definitely be checking them out.

This short novella of only 80 pages or so was a good story, but had so much unrealized potential. The plot would have made for a great full-length book where the reader could get a complete sense of the characters-- as is, it was mostly a sex romp that didn't offer anything special and emphasized the lack of depth. A good read, but not worth the money paid-- admittedly, my fault for not checking the page count before download.

Loved this story. The girlfriends watching the hottie across the way. Sex and the City banter watching Mr. Tool put on a show. He shows he knows his way around his fantasy woman's body and he manages to deal with her "issues" in an interesting way. The hot start and sweet ending make it a great read. Now I want to know what The Warren twins, Derrick and Dylan are doing.

~* 3.5 Stars *~It's innocent, if slightly indecent fun. About as indecent as the shy and a little uptight Hailey Jennison gets, actually. She and her friends get together every Friday night for some very specific girl time. Gathering around the window in her friend's apartment, lights off, snacks and drinks in hand, they look out the window and down into the apartment of the man they refer to as Mr. Tool. The man is smoking hot and has a habit of walking around his apartment barely clothed, sometimes not clothed at all (and aren't those happy nights!), with his lights on and his shades up. Hey, a girl's gotta grab whatever salacious fun she can, right? It's harmless and he's the man of her dreams - literally. Then she goes out to get some more booze for the girl's night and Mr. Tool confronts her about her and her friends' weekly activities.Mr. Tool...Gage for those who actually know him as more than just a bit of man candy, gives Hailey an ultimatum. Either she goes out on a date with him, or he calls the cops and files a complaint about her and her friends' weekly peeping. For six months Gage has been hoping for a chance with Hailey. She had moved out of the complex before he worked up the courage to talk to her, but he caught her and her friends spying on him one night and has gone out of his way to make sure she has plenty to see ever since. True, blackmailing the woman for a date isn't exactly the most gallant thing he's ever done, but it got the job done. Finally. Now, if he can just manage to get through the date without opening his mouth and sticking one or both feet into it.To say Gage is socially awkward around women would be a gross understatement. It makes starting a relationship hard, especially when he is as attracted to a woman as he is Hailey. A little blackmail seems a small matter for his pride, though, if it gets him a shot with Hailey.~*~This deliciously erotic little bit of yumminess was fun for a hot, quick read. The plot was a bit light, and I'm not sure I bought the whole gorgeous-guy-has-to-blackmail-a-girl-for-a-date concept, but the characters were likable and the sex was abundant and hot. Sometimes, that's all I need to be happy with an erotic novella like this.I liked that there was a surprisingly plentiful cast of secondary characters. The length of the story didn't give much room for them to be fleshed out very well, but spending time with Gage's family and Hailey's friends did add a bit of depth to both main characters. Depth that I enjoyed. I was amused by the relationship between Gage and his brothers and mother. Those weekly breakfast/guilt sessions and the sibling ribbings that went on seemed very natural to the characters and situations. I enjoyed them a lot.I wish that Harte had pushed the envelope of Gage's awkwardness around women even further, because he never really struck me that way when he was around Hailey. He certainly wasn't Mr. Charming, but to have built up the level of neurosis he had over his lack of ability to speak to women without saying something wrong, I would have expected him to be much, much worse than he was. Maybe if he'd been even more blunt, or less endearing with his clumsiness, I would have bought into it a bit more.Hailey didn't do much for me, really. She didn't annoy, but she's too familiar as the uptight, tightly wound Type A personality bordering on prissy. The girl with a killer bod and an ice maiden exterior fashioned from her fear of pain. I wish more originality had gone into her character, but she at least held her own.I'm not a fan of the quick-to-love theme in romance, even in erotic novellas. That, for me, was the bigger issue with the story. I wish the romance had been given a longer lead time, even if it had been in condensed form. I also would have liked a meatier plot, and I'm no fan of relationship conflict that's nothing more than a failure to communicate, as it was here. Those are the things that held me back from completely liking what I read.It was hot, though, I'll say that. And I do have a soft spot for the themes of unrequited love (or lust) and love (lust) from afar, like Gage had for Hailey. He was kind of geeky-cute with his affections and I enjoyed that aspect very much. For a quick read that will definitely raise a gal's body temp, I'd recommend this one, but I personally would have liked more story and a less annoying conflict.~*~*~*~Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.

Lord, this books starts off with a bang and does not stop! It's just one enjoyable, sexy time after another. It helps that Gage and Hailey are too cute together that you can't help but hope that it all ends well. Enjoy this book. I'm ready to read the next in the series now!

The book was good,it had humor and I really like them as a couple .might not read the 3 rd book.of the series. I don't know where it's going with the one twin being bi is not what I want to read about .

Ok this book was so short, and the characters weren't developed enough. Very unrealistic they were in love after like 1 date. But the book did have some good parts: it was super sweet, had an alpha male, and some pretty hot sex scenes.

Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks, by Ben Goldacre

From Booklist

British doctor Goldacre is funny and blunt as he bashes journalists, nutritionists, homeopaths, politicians, and pharmaceutical companies—his favorite targets. Many supposed experts, he writes, are actually people like Gillian McKeith, who recommends enemas for forehead pimples and whose PhD comes from a nonaccredited correspondence course. Goldacre also criticizes South Africa’s health minister, who turned down antiretroviral drugs for AIDS sufferers, instead advocating for raw garlic, lemons, beetroot, and potatoes. Weaving in medical history, he covers famous mistakes, such as Dr. Spock advising moms to put their babies to sleep on their bellies (now known to increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome) and Dr. Andrew Wakefield erroneously linking vaccines and autism (which led many parents to stop immunizing their kids). No coward, he takes former prime minister Tony Blair to task for refusing to say whether he had vaccinated his son. Some readers may wish for more American examples and institutions because this was supposedly retooled for the U.S. market. But all in all, Bad Science is a fun, informative read. --Karen Springen

Review

“Ben Goldacre is exasperated . . . He is irked, vexed, bugged, ticked off at sometimes inadvertent (because of stupidity) but more often deliberate deceptions perpetrated in the name of science. And he wants you, the reader, to share his feelings . . . There's more here than just debunking nonsense. The appearance of ‘scienceiness': the diagrams and graphs, the experiments (where exactly was that study published?) that prove their efficacy are all superficially plausible, with enough of a "hassle barrier" to deter a closer look. Dr. Goldacre (a very boyish-looking 36-year-old British physician and author of the popular weekly Bad Science column in The Guardian) shows us why that closer look is necessary and how to do it . . . You'll get a good grounding in the importance of evidence-based medicine . . . You'll learn how to weigh the results of competing trials using a funnel plot, the value of meta-analysis and the Cochrane Collaboration. He points out common methodological flaws . . . ‘Studies show' is not good enough, he writes: ‘The plural of "anecdote" is not data.'” ―Katherine Bouton, The New York Times“British physician and journalist Ben Goldacre takes aim at quack doctors, pharmaceutical companies and poorly designed studies in extraordinary fashion in Bad Science. He particularly loathes (most) nutritionists, especially Scottish TV personality Gillian McKeith. To prove that her American Association of Nutritional Consultants membership isn't so impressive, Goldacre describes registering his dead cat Hettie for the same credentials online. Goldacre shines in a chapter about bad scientific studies by writing it from the perspective of a make-believe big pharma researcher who needs to bring a mediocre new drug to market. He explains exactly how to skew the data to show a positive result. 'I'm so good at this I scare myself,' he writes. 'Comes from reading too many rubbish trials.'” ―Rachel Saslow, The Washington Post“Ben Goldacre, a British physician and author, has written a very funny and biting book critiquing what he calls "Bad Science.'' Under this heading he includes homeopathy, cosmetics manufacturers whose claims about their products defy plausibility, proponents of miracle vitamins, and drug companies and physicians who design faulty studies and manipulate the results . . . While it is a very entertaining book, it also provides important insight into the horrifying outcomes that can result when willful anti-intellectualism is allowed equal footing with scientific methodology.” ―Dennis Rosen, The Boston Globe“I hereby make the heretical argument that it is time to stop cramming kids' heads with the Krebs cycle, Ohm's law, and the myriad other facts that constitute today's science curricula. Instead, what we need to teach is the ability to detect Bad Science--BS, if you will. The reason we do science in the first place is so that ‘our own atomized experiences and prejudices' don't mislead us, as Ben Goldacre of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine puts it in his new book, Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks. Understanding what counts as evidence should therefore trump memorizing the structural formulas for alkanes.” ―Sharon Begley, Newsweek.com“Dr. Ben Goldacre's UK bestseller Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks is finally in print in the USA, and Americans are lucky to have it. Goldacre writes a terrific Guardian column analyzing (and debunking) popular science reporting, and has been a star in the effort to set the record straight on woowoo ‘nutritionists,' doctors who claim that AIDS can be cured with vitamns, and vaccination/autism scares. Bad Science is more than just a debunking expose (though its that): it's a toolkit for critical thinking, a primer on statistics and valid study design, a guide to meta-analysis and other tools for uncovering and understanding truth . . . The book should be required reading for everyone who cares about health, science, and public policy.” ―BoingBoing.net“One of the best books I've ever read. It completely changed the way I saw the world. And I actually mean it.” ―Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist“Ben Goldacre lucidly, and irreverently, debunks a frightening amount of pseudoscience, from cosmetics to dietary supplements to alternative medicine. If you want to read one book to become a better-informed consumer and citizen, read Bad Science.” ―Sandeep Jauhar, author of Intern“This is a much-needed book. Ben Goldacre shows us--with hysterical wit--how to separate the scam artists from real science. In a world of misinformation, this is a rare gem.” ―Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek“Smart, funny, clear, unflinching: Ben Goldacre is my hero. Bad Science should be kicking up the dust on every high school science curriculum in America. ” ―Mary Roach, author of Stiff, Spook, and Bonk“Ben Goldacre uses a brilliant mix of science and wit to challenge and investigate alternative therapists and the big pharmaceutical corporations. Bad Science is an invaluable tool for anybody who wants to protect themselves from the snake-oil salesmen of the twenty-first century. ” ―Simon Singh, author of Big Bang and Fermat's Last Theorem

In some sense this book is more about the importance of the free press than "bad science". Chapter 10 did not appear in the original version of the book because Goldacre was being sued for libel at the time; while its publication is vindication, one can imagine that others without Goldacre's tenacity and backing would have given up. While media's misrepresentation bears the brunt of Goldacre's wrath throughout the book, that the book ended up on many "best of the year" lists indicates that there are two sides to this story, and there is good and bad media just like good and bad science (but you knew that). Goldacre's book is really aimed at journalists - if those covering science and health issues would read this and take it to heart, we might all be better off. (On the other hand, I think that it's likely that those enlightened journalists would just be replaced, as their publishers are mainly interested in making sales. Goldacre points out that the status quo is not to have true science journalists cover "big" science/health stories, because they tend to drain the sensational and erroneous b.s. out of them.)Aside from all that, for the rest of us it's still a very worthwhile read, because we can never hear too many times that we should use the scientific method and embrace evidence-based medicine, and we rarely hear it in a voice as entertaining as Goldacre's. Like some of the less-favorable reviews point out, the book is a bit repetitive and shrill at times (Goldacre seems to have a particular ax to grind with yuppies with humanities backgrounds), and very Brit-centric, so some might say five stars is a stretch. If the subject matter were less important I'd probably agree, but taken as a whole package the combination of importance and readability makes it a standout. Strongly recommended.

Overall a very good and amusing book. I think the author does get a little passionate about some topics and rambles a bit, but it's an ok tradeoff.I do wish the author gave more defining criteria for some of the items he discusses, especially about homeopathy. I would like to know more about what kind of products he has referring to in some of his discussions.Quality: see the photo, but the printer messed up on some of the pages and makes it hard to read! I thought I was having a stroke!

I just finished reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre, and it's the most important book I've read in a long time. It's not a thriller, it's a nonfiction work of popular science. But that description doesn't do this book justice. Bad Science has the power to change the world (for the better), if people would read it carefully and with an open mind. It rails against the anti-science winds sweeping our culture, and more importantly, empowers ordinary people of reasonable intelligence to think like scientists and protect themselves from so much unscientific claptrap dressed up as science that is for sale, is on the Internet, and even in respectable media such as newspapers. In fact, I believe Bad Science should be a mandatory part of all high school science curricula, or at the very least, required reading for all medical students (who in my experience are as vulnerable to pseudoscience as other people). Heck, whoever you are, if you haven't read this book, you need to.Ben Goldacre is a brainy muckraker who, with acerbic wit and unassailable accuracy, attacks anti-scientific BS and clearly explains how it cloaks itself in a scientific aura, and how it's wrong. The beautiful thing is, you don't have to be a scientist or even a particularly scientifically literate person to understand. Anybody with a brain can detect BS if given the proper tools.Goldacre's targets cover the spectrum from "quacks, hacks" to "big pharma flacks". He lays bare the alternative realities in which live detox treatments, ear candling, anti-aging cosmetics, homeopathy, diet experts, antioxidants, pharmaceutical companies with large advertising budgets, vaccine opponents, and most frightening of all, people who oppose antiretroviral therapy for AIDS and argue that HIV does not cause this disease. In my opinion, the author is utterly fair in his arguments. But he is not always nice. (Is there a reason why he should be?) Ben Goldacre is my new hero, slaying dragons of ignorance and going head-to-head in intellectual combat with some of the most hysterically irrational elements in society today.Along the way as you read this entertaining book, you'll learn what you need to know about clinical trials, about the power and limitations of statistics, and about how to think critically, to become a little Ben Goldacre yourself. My favorite quote from the book is one of the best science quotes of all time:The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

Interesting book. Author writes well with a cynical sense of humor. He has a chapter where he pounds some nutritionist who I never heard of but is apparently a big deal in the author's native England. It seems like a personal vendetta of some sort. Anyhow, there's enough good stuff in here that makes it worthwhile. The book makes you look at "evidence" and "studies" in a whole new way, and how you can filter out promotional crap from reality.

This is the most informative and authoritative book on Complimentary Medecine I have encountered. It is broadly redesrched, has good illustrations, is witty as well as relatively non-Judgemental.A winner for Skeptics and those seeking knowledge of the lack of Science-Based claims of Complementary Medicine

Fantastic. Great insight into the issues that there are with many studies and research done today for the sake of views, hits, and sensationalism.

The term 'science' is used to confer status to a lot of things that are just opinions or are just advertising gimmicks. This book was written by a professional who can help you distinguish real science from cheap nonsense that is only designed to fool you. Real science is really valuable and is validated according to strict methodology. Junk science violates proper methodology in order to get you to do foolish things.Robert Aster (author: Missions from JPL fifty years of amazing flight projects)

I found this book to be very informative. It answered several questions I had about tree care. While I was not happy with some of the answers about the care of trees, the information did make me stop and reconsider what my next course of action should be, especially in regard to the use of chemicals. I also learned a lot about pruning. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends.

A pleasant, well written book about trees - hence four stars. The author likes and knows his subject.I would not call it "a complete guide". I was looking for information about pruning (the author only says that he is against it), about the way trees get ill, the way to recognize illness and help them recover, the way they interact with one another , with other plants or with fungi. On those points the book wasn't satysfying enough. But it was a nice read nevertheless.

Excellent information for the novice or well-seasoned gardener with emphasis on practical instructions for tree care. Also, includes engaging "talks" with some fine old trees!

A VERY comprehensive and clearly-written guide for taking care of our trees. The FAQs chapter was particularly helpful to me as it answered so many of my ongoing concerns with the many trees and shrubs on our property.

Quite a fun and informative read. Easy reading, full of great information. While it’s specific, it’s not “technical” or difficult to relate to my gardens or problems. Appreciate the frank and honest material with solid, pertinent solutions for the real world. After 30 years of gardening, I was surprised to learn so many helpful ideas. Happy to have purchased this informative book.

This book tells the truth about any tree you want to learn about. Steve has successfully helped us personally and where I for my job. He gives you decades of knowledge in a concise book. A must read!

Very useful information.

The Lightning Dreamer: Cuba's Greatest Abolitionist, by Margarita Engle

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Engle’s historical novel in verse is a fictionalized biography of the nineteenth-century Cuban abolitionist poet Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, known as Tula. Told in multiple voices, Engle’s elegant verses, rich in simile and metaphor, focus on the poet’s life as a teenager. Forbidden access to books because her mother believes reading and writing make women unattractive, Tula escapes to a nearby convent. There, she discovers volumes by the rebel poet José María de Heredia, whose words feed her own rebellious spirit, which is exemplified by her rejection of two arranged marriages. I long to write like Heredia, she muses, but what do I know of great cities and the wide lives of men? I’m just a silenced girl. My stories are simple tales of emotion. Seen as an outcast and a madwoman, she is sent to the country, where she falls in love with Sab, a freed slave, and continues to write about equality for slaves and for women. Engle’s richly evocative verses conjure up a time when women, like slaves, were regarded as property to be sold into loveless marriages. This is the context for a splendid novel that celebrates one brave woman who rejected a constrained existence with enduring words that continue to sing of freedom. Grades 7-12, --Michael Cart

Poetic dystopian? Well, not really but in this gorgeously written, wonderful little book the author describes a girl ahead of her time whose voice cannot be quieted despite many attempts by her mother and mother country. Engle's "Tula" rejects the status quo of slavery and women as property. She is ahead of her time and "fights" injustices through words, stories and actions. She pays a price for her voice because silence is unbearable. A beautiful book.

I have never been disappointed by one of Margarita Engle’s books and The Lightning Dreamer is no exception. It’s the fascinating true story of a Cuban woman who worked both for the abolition of slavery and equal rights for women. My guess is that many of you have never heard of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellanda, I certainly hadn’t. Engle’s ability to bring to life these lesser known but incredibly important historical characters is part of what makes her work so significant. Her novels in verse make historical characters like Tula accessible and real to younger readers. In writing this review, I was reminded of my obsession with biographies when I was in elementary school. When I was eight years old I decided that I was going to read every biography in my school’s library. Our biographies were shelved alphabetically by the name of the person the book was about. When I think about the books that I read then, I remember a number of books about Davy Crockett, Grover Cleveland and Amelia Earhart. Obviously, I didn’t make it all the way through, it would seem I stopped somewhere around E. But in thinking back, I’m struck by the lack of diversity in the people represented on my library’s shelves. I can only hope that with the availability of books like that of Engle things aren’t the same now. If books such as The Lightning Dreamer, The Surrender Tree, or Hurricane Dancers had been available to me then, I may have made it past E in my quest to read all those biographies. In telling the story of Tula, Engle’s book opens up a number of relevant topics for classroom discussion. As Tula becomes increasingly aware of the disparities in society, she begins to both ponder and write about things such as slavery, interracial marriage, and women’s rights. Tula grapples with these moral and ethical dilemmas in a language that invites students to question and struggle with her. She provides a way to teach our younger students about times when equal rights for people of color and women were explicitly denied. While it’s important to continue to discuss the ways in which equality is still not a reality for all people today, it’s just as important to discuss the historical contexts that our contemporary struggles for equality come from.Engle gives us a strong female protagonist who fights to remain authentic to the things she believes in, but in doing this, Engle also shows how hard it is to be that kind of person. It’s never easy to go against main stream society or to be the outcast among one’s friends or family. Through Tula, Engle gives voice to what it feels like to be alienated or exiled for one’s beliefs. These are powerful ideas for our students to think about—both those who can identify with Tula’s loneliness and those who realize they may be like the people who mocked Tula for being different. Tula is a powerful character, not just because of what she believed, but because of how she chose to stand up for those beliefs. She fought for equality and human rights through her stories and her poetry. She used the power of words as a means to change the minds of those around her. How valuable a lesson for the students in our classrooms—that our words are one of the most powerful tools we have for fighting against the things that try to hold us back. I’ll leave you with the words from Gertrudis Gómez de Avellanda that inspired the title of the book—“The slave let his mind fly free, and his thoughts soared higher than the clouds where lightning forms.”The Lightning Dreamer: Cuba's Greatest Abolitionist has received a number of awards: 2014 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults, School Library Journal's Top Ten Latino-themed Books for 2013, Teaching for Change 2013 Favorite, Center for the Study of Multicultural Children's Literature selection as a Best Multicultural Book of 2013, 2014 Pura Belpré Honor Book, and International Reading Association Top Chapter Book for 2013.Our free educator’s guide is available on our wordpress blog Vamos a Leer.

The novel begins in 1827. Tula’s mother, who twice made the mistake of marrying for love, is desperate to prevent her thirteen-year-old daughter from taking a similar path. Mamá’s motivations are clear-cut. A wealthy connection through Tula is the family’s only hope for propping up their shaky economic status. In 19th-century colonial Cuba, arranged marriages are the social norm, but Tula’s mother worries that a girl who buries her nose in books will not attract the right kind of husband–a rich one.Who is Tula? Margarita Engle is acclaimed for novels in verse that bring to life history’s outliers, young men and women from previous centuries who thought and acted in surprisingly modern ways, and Tula stands tall among them. She’s based on Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, a Cuban poet who championed liberty for all humans and wrote Sab, an abolitionist novel, the first of its kind in Spanish. Sab predated Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Harriet Beecher Stowe classic, by eleven years. Avellaneda’s importance as an abolitionist and feminist writer is not widely known in English-speaking America. The Lightning Dreamer corrects this oversight and imagines Avellaneda’s formative years, just as she began to discover the life-changing force of poetry.Marriageability is not the only issue that arises from Tula’s penchant for reading. She happens upon the forbidden poetry of José María Heredia, whose sharp observations awaken Tula’s passion for justice. In colonial Cuba, injustice is everywhere. Her eyes take in the plight of African slaves, biracial babies abandoned to the convent, lovers kept apart by miscegenation taboos, and girls like herself, doomed to business arrangements thinly masquerading as marriages. Tula expresses her ardor for justice through poetry, which she burns to keep her mother from discovering. When Tula refuses the marriage that her grandfather arranges, she must rise to meet a string of new challenges. The inheritance is lost and her family is condemned to relative poverty. For a while, Tula finds refuge in a storyteller’s community, where she becomes entangled in an unrequited love. She moves away from the countryside to Havana, where she supports herself through tutoring. In 1836, her brother, Manuel, warns her that their mother is cooking up another arranged match. Tula flees for Spain, expecting to find greater social and creative freedom there. The Lightning Dreamer is written in free verse and is voiced through multiple characters. Tula is the most frequent speaker. Short segments provide other characters’ point of view. A partial list includes Tula’s mother; Manuel; Caridad, the freed slave who works for the family; the nuns who offer Tula space to read and write in peace; and Sab. Each character speaks in first person. I imagine them as a series of stage players delivering brief and sometimes prejudicial monologues reflecting on Tula’s choices. This approach perfectly suits the fictionalized treatment of a young poet. The language is spare and often stunning, capturing vivid images and profound interiority.

The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history. This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I you are on the fence about purchasing this book, please go on you will not be disappointed.

Item received on 2/25/17 by mail. a Very interesting book, who tells us more detailed pieces from the American history than you ought to learn, often with several boring facts on school.Kenneth C. Davis gives a very realistic picture of what was going good and wrong during the American history, and the influence in their concerned world.Again, the right literature that fills in the gaps of what we really didn't know.

If you're like me and don't remember much from American history classes in school, this book will help! I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further. The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan. Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.
