About the Author

George Heineman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at WPI. His research interests are in Software Engineering. He co-edited the 2001 book "Component-Based Software Engineering: Putting the Pieces Together". He was the Program Chair for the 2005 International Symposium on Component-Based Software Engineering.Gary Pollice is a self-labeled curmudgeon (that's a crusty, ill-tempered, usually old man) who spent over 35 years in industry trying to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up. Even though he hasn't grown up yet, he did make the move in 2003 to the hallowed halls of academia where he has been corrupting the minds of the next generation of software developers with radical ideas like, "develop software for your customer, learn how to work as part of a team, design and code quality and elegance and correctness counts, and it's okay to be a nerd as long as you are a great one."Gary is a Professor of Practice (meaning he had a real job before becoming a professor) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He went to WPI because he was so impressed with the WPI graduates that he's worked with over the years. He lives in central Massachusetts with his wife, Vikki, and their two dogs, Aloysius and Ignatius. When not working on geeky things he ... well he's always working on geeky things. I bought this in preparation for software engineering job interviews after being out of college for a decade and finding myself being asked to write things like a Quicksort at onsite interviews. This book covers a number of the commonly used Sorting/Searching algorithms as well as delving into path finding and other interesting topics. Even after finding a job I still enjoy reading it and have found it useful on several occasions when I needed to determine the best algorithm for the job.The code examples are mostly written in C but most programmers will be fine with using the psuedo-coded algorithms and their favorite language.

Great book. Teaches topics found in my class in a more clear and concise manner then the course's assigned textbook. The writing style and pseudocode are relatively easy to comprehend.

Bought useds, good single-source reference for those of us who weren't necessarily CS majors in school but found ourselves programming for a living

Handy to have about, but for a desktop reference, I think there should have been some more material. Sorting and searching are not the only things people want to implement - coverage of some other topics would have made this better.

Don't get me wrong, math equations are very important and are critical parts of understanding algorithms. However, in many algorithm books, I feel that between long math equations and multi-page proofs, something is lost, and readers and students therefore suffer. This is the ONLY book I've found so far that UNDERSTANDABLY explains algorithms without Math-Proof spam. It is actually the best algorithm reference book I've found so far. Has lots of pictures.Well worth the money. BUY IT.

When we as software developers apply algorithms in our daily work, how many of us really have to prove to our bosses or customers the algorithms works mathematically? I bet there most of us don't.That's how come this book is extremely useful for algorithms consumers. It's very practical and skip most of the math b***s***. You open it, jump right to the solution you want, lookup the pseudocode and the graph, and maybe spend a few minutes to read the description, that's it. Get in, get out, get things done, people happy. If you really care about the math, there are plenty of algorithms classic out there on the shelf you can get. But if you just need the algorithms to save you ass at some point like me, this is the perfect choice.

I'm only part way through so far but enjoying this book. The style of writing is geared very well to understanding the algorithms.

The book has an appropriate coverage on several interesting techniques commonly used and referred to in computer sciences. Worth the money.

The Seabird's Cry: The Lives and Loves of the Planet's Great Ocean Voyagers, by Adam Nicolson

Review

“Threading together science and poetry with a sense of wonder, Adam Nicolson’s The Seabird’s Cry reminds us that these birds are always there at the edge of our existence: at once familiar and utterly mysterious . . . The elegance of the writing, and the very human curiosity and compassion for the seabirds themselves, is enthralling . . . A sustained and powerful cry for a greater understanding and empathy of their unique environments.” ―The Wall Street Journal “Wondrous and lyrical, this book swoops and dives into the art and science of natural history with as much grace as the seabirds it examines.”―The Boston Globe (a Best Book of 2018)“Beautifully written, haunting in imagery and filled with marvels, the book is also a farewell salute to a once teeming dimension of the natural world, now increasingly devastated by human environmental malfeasance.”―Star Tribune (Critics' Choice, Top 10 of 2018) “Breathtaking . . . Nicolson’s mind is well stocked and acrobatic, and capable of vivid connections . . . He has an intuitive understanding of the birds that feels almost uncanny . . . His gift is to present this research in a way that is not just comprehensible but compelling, even moving, and to intercut it with dazzling description . . . His swithering between the forensic and the poetic creates a sense of wonder.” ―The Spectator“With scientific rigor and a poet’s sense of wonder, Nicolson uncovers the lives of puffins and kittiwakes, fulmars and gulls, all the while investigating the impact of climate change on these seabirds.” ―The American Scholar“Bounteous . . . An Aladdin’s cave of enlightenment.” ―London Evening Standard“Captivating . . . A celebration of these strange and marvelous beings and the forbidding places they call home.” ―The Christian Science Monitor“A beautiful exploration . . . Gorgeous . . . Expansive, generous and beautifully composed.” ―The Guardian“Intimate and engrossing . . . A buoyant celebration of seabirds that serves as an important reminder of nature’s fragility.” ―Kirkus Reviews“An extraordinary hymn to threatened seabirds that breaks down the barriers separating science and poetry . . . Evocative . . . Luminous . . . Nicolson spools outwards from the Shiants, building in the reader’s mind a richly interconnected world of birds on their cliffs and crags, or gliding over endless oceans, all of it described in the most lustrous, lucid prose. I filled the back of the book with quotes I copied down, little sparks of recognition and delight.” ―Financial Times“A moving exploration . . . Demonstrates that wonder about the natural world can be deepened by increasing one’s knowledge of it and that emotional wisdom can be reinforced by the acquisition of practical information. He blends insightful ethological observations with elements of the mythical and peppers his delivery of practical, premodern knowledge with poetic imagery . . . whimsical . . . appeals to both the mind and the heart . . . Nicolson combines a huge amount of scientific information with deeply emotional content and the net effect is moving and quietly profound.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) “The Seabird’s Cry . . . is full of wonder and guilt, life and death; it is a threnody sounding from cliff to cliff . . . dizzyingly, dazzlingly good.” ―The Herald Scotland “This isn’t just about ‘seabirds.’ It’s about the living poetry of winged beings who share our planet as though inhabiting another world.” ―Carl Safina, author of Song for the Blue Ocean and Beyond Words.“This marvellous book inhabits with graceful ease both the mythic and the scientific, and remains alert to the vulnerability of these birds as well as to their wonder. It is a work that takes wing in the mind.” ―Robert Macfarlane, award-winning author of Landmarks, The Wild Places, and Mountains of the Mind“The Seabird’s Cry is a magnificent book and takes its place all at once among the greatest of modern bird books; page after page of extraordinary power, amazing mastery of the science, scintillating and muscled retelling of countless maps and graphs, Nicolson has got the truth better even than those who dug it up; an imaginative reach and original inhabiting of what he has seen, the birds themselves; so enamoured of life it makes you cry; so big with the bigness it finds; and quite wonderful; no one else is doing this or has; it is utterly brilliant.” ―Tim Dee, author of The Running Sky and Poetry for Birds

Adam Nicholson is a master at creating images of the lives of the birds. Each species profiled becomes indelibly embedded in your mind and heart. As a resident of the West Coast of California I have an opportunity to see some birds from the beach and on excursions to the Farallon Islands or farther away from the shore and I will never forget the first sight of an albatross. Nicholson takes you to the rookeries where life and death battles happen every hour, describing with clarity the lives of these wonderful birds.

Superb writing. If you have any feeling for the ravages of man, this will heighten your awareness and bring you to tears. Having seen the Layson Albatross up close, this reminded me of how docile they appear to be but reveals the true nature behind their existence. His descriptions are riveting.

Excellent reading. Poetry, science and more. I learned a lot. I like how the author makes the birds have characters.

An excellent book. Author covers a variety of seabirds in an interesting and informative way.

More philosophical musings than natural history.

I want to like this book more than I do. There are places in it where Nicolson reports accounts of research that are fascinating and hard to believe, especially on the ways the birds move about on the ocean, but there are other parts where this book is simply hard to read. This book contains a series of maps that are useful, but also leave off some points that are emphasized in the text. Nicolson apparently owns a seabird island in the Minch, a seaway between the Hebrides and the mainland of Scotland, so he has definitely been living with his subjects for much of his life. The book is divided up into 10 accounts of seabird groups of species, (2 gulls, 3 alcids, 3 tubenoses, and 2 pelicaniformes), with a concluding chapter. He seems to really like the gulls (including Kittiwakes), the alcids (Puffin, Guillemot (Murre for us Yanks), and Razorbill). He is less enthusiastic about the tubenoses (fulmar, shearwater, and albatross), although he does admire their ability to navigate the open ocean, and he does not seem that fond of the Cormorants, Shags, and Gannets. One thing about Seabirds's Cry is that Nicolson seems determined to find the darkest stories to tell about each species. He is obsessed with infanticide, a phenomenon found in several seabird groups. When he reviews an interesting paper about Altruism and Spite in gulls, he focuses almost entirely on spite, even when much of the original paper dealt with altruistic behavior by gulls. He is correct on pointing out that many of these species lose high percentages of their chicks, but if you read this book for inspiration and insight these parts will bring you down.To me seabirds are among the most fascinating organisms on the planet with their surprisingly long lives, and pair bonds between males and females that may last one of these lifetimes. Some birds are paired for more than 50 years which puts many human pairings to shame. They live so long, in fact, that in some cases we may not realize how precarious their populations may be. Nicolson is careful to tell us that some species have not bred successfully for several years, which is a genuine source of concern. It is tough to be a seabird, but those individuals that succeed are some of the most fascinating organisms on our planet.

The author certainly writes beautifully, and when he is not quoting poets he often sounds like one himself. The prose style reminded me of another brilliant nature advocate, David Haskell and his Forest Unseen. There are ten chapters each addressing a specific species of seabird, and they are indeed full of fascinating details. But they all relentlessly repeat the same message: that as a group they are in danger of extinction because of various human environmental impacts. The story of the great auk is well told as a cautionary tale. But in making his case, he seems to go off the deep end at times, committing the cardinal sin for a biologist of projecting human values onto animal behaviour. The elegizing of monogamy and family values in some species sounded a little right-winged, pardon the pun. At least he points out that the promiscuous ones seem to be winning the evolutionary race. And if, as the title seems to imply, seabirds are literally crying about their fate in the Anthropocene, there is the consolation that three of the ten species are thriving. An interesting collection of stories, but I would have enjoyed it more if some of the sentimentality had been plucked.

#219,428 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

On November 7, 1938, Herschel Grynszpan (pronounced Greenspan)… a 5 foot 1 inch… 100 pound… 17 year-old Jewish boy… who had never owned a gun… or fired one… walked into the German Embassy in France and shot the first German diplomat he saw.Herschel was a Polish German Jew who had illegally fled to France… while his beloved parents, brother and sister remained in Germany.. until they along with 12-18,000 other Jews were deported to Poland by the Nazi’s … after the Nazi’s took all their money and worldly possessions… and then in squalid conditions were literally dumped “into the cold and abandoned, without money, food, provisions, or help of any kind whatever.” This is what pushed young… diminutive… and frail… Herschel… to walk into the German Embassy and fire a gun for the first time… which led to the death of Ernst vom Rath two days later. On November 9, 1938 the Nazi’s executed “Kristallnacht” (THE NIGHT OF BROKEN GLASS) the history changing pogrom against the Jews in Germany. “the number of people murdered and damage done has never been fully assessed. It has been estimated at least 236 murdered…. With more than 600 permanently maimed. Hundreds more died in concentration camps during the next few weeks. Some 7,500 stores were ransacked, looted, and destroyed. In addition arson or other wreckage destroyed 267 synagogues. Jewish community centers, cemetery chapels, and the like were burned to the ground.” After the pogrom massive “fines” were levied… all wholesale and retail Jewish businesses were shutdown. “Jews were required to surrender any stocks they owned, and jewelry, precious stones and metals, as well as art objects had to be sold to state purchasing offices”.And how did Hitler… Goebbels… and the other Nazi madmen justify this? They were internally thrilled… to blame the whole thing on young Herschel Grynszpan. Goebbels… the Nazi propaganda chief… with Hitler’s enthusiastic backing… planned and attempted a worldwide propaganda/marketing blitz that stated Herschel was part of a worldwide Jewish conspiracy. When they arrested Herschel he was exploited and over time transferred from prison to prison to concentration camp to prison. The Nazi’s planned a trial for the world to see… that a young Jew was directed by Jewish world leaders to commit this murder… and thus give the Nazi’s the “ability” to blame the “Night of Broken Glass”… and even the coming Holocaust on Herschel. The author does a brilliant job in laying out the landscape of Europe and the plight of the Jews… and the madness of the Nazi’s. Herschel with advice from one of his lawyer’s (he was obviously guilty of murder) changed his confession to say he did it because of a homosexual lover’s dispute with the German official. The idea being that the Nazi’s would be too embarrassed to have this played out on the world stage. The timing of the Nuremberg Laws… the Munich Agreement (a defeat of France without a battle)… are all interwoven into this… easy to read… yet compelling narrative. As reporter Dorothy Thompson put it: “There must be some kind of higher justice for this young boy.” One of his attorney’s Serge Weill-Goudchaux wrote: “Yes, Grynszpan was the first “resister” in the terrible and abject struggle the Nazi’s created.” “That doubtless exaggerates, but the fact remains that he did, AT LEAST, FIGHT BACK, AND HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST.”Note to potential readers: Do NOT skip A NOTE ON SOURCES at the end of this wonderful book. It illuminates even further this episode in history!

I was hesitant at first in purchasing this book, I wasn't really sure it would appeal to me. Well, guess what? I very much liked it, much more than I thought I would. I had always wondered about the real story behind Herschel Grynszpan, the teenager who supposedly set off the horror of Kristallnacht. To say the least, the book is very much about politics which usually bore me, however, Hitler's Pawn really took me in. There is so much fascinating information in here that explains this mysterious story, a story that over time has gotten so confused with myth and lore. It also makes you feel really good that a young Jewish boy could outwit the murderous Nazi regime. At times the writing is a bit repetitious, but overall a great read.

Steven Koch has written a compelling account of the little-known but important story of Herschel Grynszpan. The book is hard to put down. Though one knows how it ends, the incidental details along the way are gripping. The chapter on the day of the assassination in particular, but really the whole book, is cinematic in the way it cuts between scenes and summons up the feel of events. Koch is careful to distinguish between what is known, what is very likely, and what is speculative. The book is written with a historian's care and precision but a novelist's narrative force.

Like another reviewer, I couldn't put it down. I read it in two sittings. It's so well put together and interesting. Highlyrecommended.

It reads as though the author was obligated to create a certain number of pages and to do so he stretched the material beyond any reasonable length. Some paragraphs seem to take one sentence and restate it 4 different ways.I started turning pages just to get to the end. Very disappointing.

Forget all the Atkins books since Dr. Atkins died. This is the authentic, will work if you follow the rules, Atkins Diet. I've been following Atkins for almost 15 years. It is the Holy Grail.

LOVE THIS DIET...I recall doing this diet in my 20s (I am 45 years young) and I forgot all about it til I was getting DEPRESSED do to gaining 40lbs which I researched different diets and a lot of KETO posting was on Instagram...I did a google search on Keto and guess what popped up??? ATKINS...YAY....I started at 214.2 and I am now 191.6...its been slow but I am HAPPY!

The transition away from simple carbohydrates/sugar is a very serious and worthwhile withdrawal process. Done properly with no cheating, you can get through the Withdrawal in about 5 days give or take. Then your body will begin a healing process. It is amazing. Greens and Proteins with High Natural Saturated fat content is all you need. You'll never over eat when living when you finally reject all simple carbs and sugars. Yeah, that means rejecting fruit too which is mostly destructive sugar and trace amounts of nutrient value. Paleo, South Beach, and LCHF are other excellent plans you might consider.

I did this diet 13 years ago without ever reading the book. I succeeded in losing the unwanted pounds and kept them off for years. I moved to a different state, remodeled a house and gained a little too much weight. So, I recently ordered this book and will be following this lifestyle again. This time I've read the original book and have a whole new perspective on Atkins. Unfortunately, the information on line has drastically changed everything Dr. Atkins originally stated in this program. The original Atkins program must be followed from this edition and results will happen.

Low carbohydrate and ketogenic diet books are all the rage today, but that wasn't exactly so back in the seventies and eighties. Dr. Atkins changed that almost single-handedly with his diet plan.If you've read the newer books by Atkins (Dr. Atkins' NEW Diet Revolution), you'll notice immediately when reading this version that he wasn't holding back as much when he originally wrote this book. He essentially stated repeatedly that people can eat as much as they like as long as it was primarily meat and fat. He still allowed for modest salad intake, even during induction. He also placed more emphasis on protein in his later books instead of just removing carbohydrates and eating fat.I don't know if his beliefs changed or if he felt he had to change his position to conform to the mainstream, but either way, it was a change.

Reading this book shows how much the current Atkins has been changed from the original. It may not be fair to assume motivations, but it is clear that Atkins Corp could not sell all those products while still promoting this original plan. I adopted the 1 week, biologically zero carb plan, after dong low carb informally, and it really kick started my stalled weight loss.

This is the original that started it all. I first bought this book in the 70's and lost 30 lbs by following what was in this book. I find for me a carb free diet is the best diet to go on to lose the extra weight. You can eat as much as you need to satisfy hunger from the list of foods you are allowed. And the Ketostix make it fun to keep track of your level of ketosis. I have NEVER suffered ill effects from this diet and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to lose the extra weight.

There are countless LCHF books on the market today, but I keep going back to the original Atkins. It's truly a no-fail diet when followed correctly. I read it in the late '70's and tried this strange new way of eating... LOVED it! I'd since lost my old copy of the book and was glad to find it on Amazon. The newer versions are also good, but there have been changes that aren't as tried-and-true as Dr. Atkins' original work. One word of caution, though: you'll probably have to google a number of the ingredients in his recipe section, because some of that stuff isn't made any more!

Probably more of a 3.5, but I'm rounding up because it was still fun for the most part!Daughter of the Siren Queen takes place two months after the ending to the last one with Alosa and her crew finally getting the last piece of the map to the island of sirens- and a massive treasure. While Alosa takes the man who had her prisoner captive, he tells a secret that her father has kept for years. Soon Alosa and her crew are in a race with the entire pirate fleet to get to the treasure first. She'll have to learn how to control her powers while putting up with Riden, who she is might have feelings for.For the most part I did really enjoy this book! It's a swashbuckling adventure that never slows down with a badass female pirate captain and her almost all female crew on the high seas. Alosa also has some interesting powers that she can not control. That is where lies the start of my major issue in this book: she can't seem to control her powers without the help of a man. But that is probably just my personal preference on it.The romance in this book? It's downright awful. While I enjoyed them together in the first book, this time it was 98% of Alosa actually abusing Riden and being mean to him throughout while he pretty much takes it, instead of ever fighting her back. Or being the interesting pirate he could have been. He is her whipping boy to yell at when things go wrong or to throw punches while he takes whatever. It had already been said that she is stronger than a normal woman so, that's a big no from me.As for that, I didn't have any other issues. Alosa was a strong heroine and while she was kind of bad, I loved seeing her interact with her crew, and I wouldn't mind seeing more adventures from them. It was very entertaining! Plus swordfighting, siren magic, and sailing to treasure just tickled my Pirates of the Caribbean loving heart.

Overall, I did enjoy this book, but nowhere near how I felt about the first one, which I absolutely loved. It took me a little bit to get into it and I had a hard time keeping the new names straight of Alosa’s crew members. I’m not sure if there were just too many new ones thrown at you at once or if it was because it had been a few months since I had read the first one. There wasn’t anything especially wrong with the story, so I’m just not exactly sure why this one didn’t grab my attention like the first one did. I missed Alosa’s cunning that she exuded in the first book. The introduction of the siren queen was just lackluster. There was so much build up for her story, but in the end there wasn’t really much story there. I also missed the intrigue and the romantic tension. For some reason, I just didn’t feel that burning connection like I did in the first one. I did feel it a little more towards the end, but that was it. I just kept wondering the whole time: Where is the fierce and witty Alosa from the first book?It was good. It was a fun adventure story, but after preordering it as soon as I finished reading the first one and the anticipation of months waiting, it sadly just did not live up.

Well, that was quite the adventure if I do say so myself. It took me so so long to read this and it really shouldn't have considering these are such fast and fun books. For some reason I really just had an issue getting into it. I felt like it didn't really need a sequel to it, nonetheless, I am glad we got one. It wasn't until I forced myself to sit down and really read it that I got interested in it, even then, I found some parts to just be really dull and disinteresting.Once I got past all of that, I actually did really enjoy it. It's still a fun quick read with some really awesome characters. I also really enjoyed specific things that happened in this book, like getting to delve more into the sirens and finding and learning more about Alosa's mother. I loved the progression of Alosa and Riden's relationship and how they grew to trust each other; though it definitely did bounce back and forth. They would argue and then turn around and make out right away; and this happened throughout almost the whole book, so it was slightly annoying.

Finished reading the second book the other day. One thing I'm absolutely loving about Tricia Levenseller is that she made this world so easy to dive into. The story was smooth and effortless. And the action was brilliantly laid out.The beginning of this book started out much like the last - in battle! I think that's my favorite way for a book to start right now. In the middle of the action. However, when we arrive back at the ship, I was honestly a bit ticked with Alosa. I feel that she made a lot of excuses for herself when it comes to Riden. He clearly wasn't an enemy. I think the author wanted to add tension, but didn't quite succeed with making it GOOD tension.Once things got moving, the book was truly enjoyable. There were a few twists and turns that was done well. Things were getting intense and the only way to win the battle for their lives was for Alosa to greet her inner siren. To learn and try to control that side of her.We get to learn more about Alosa and Riden - how they can work together as a team, you know, once they stop finding excuses to fight each other. And Riden is, well... RIDEN.Overall, this was still a fun book! The uniqueness of this duology is one that I think everyone should at least read once.
