This edition by Norton republishing Patricia Highsmith's second novel, The Price of Salt, or Carol as later titled by the author, is worth its higher price than the other Kindle editions available that are fraught with typos and amateurish typesetting. I imagine most who are checking out reviews here have either already seen the movie Carol (based on the book) or plan to see the movie yet wish to read the book first. I had already read an earlier edition of The Price of Salt prior to seeing the movie recently. I'm glad I've invested in this Norton edition as it includes interesting and informative commentary from Highsmith shedding light into the backstory of her writing the novel mid-20th century in the first place.For me, reading the book and experiencing the movie are a complete package. Like two persons who belong together, words well written and images well framed can be better appreciated than partaking of one without the other.In terms of the novel, Highsmith's prose does a wonderful job of developing its characters, particularly the character Therese who is the story's protagonist. The novel is clearly written from Therese's point of view. It is a coming-of-age story about Therese and her experiences that lead her to falling in love with an older woman, Carol, who is in the midst of getting a divorce. Carol is torn between her love for her daughter, named Rindy, and her attraction and growing romantic love for Therese that puts Carol's relationship with her young daughter at risk. It is a dark story at times fraught with immense tensions and conflicts acutely felt but forcibly suppressed by certain characters as it takes place within the early 1950s. Such is a a time when same-sex attraction was considered both pathological and criminal if acted upon, and the novel's dialogue and narrative must be seen within this repressed societal context of the day. The novel is quite revolutionary for its time, carrying a somewhat ambiguous though positive ending for the two women in love rather than the typical tragic one, and the story continues to be relevant even today. The movie, as brilliantly directed and supurbly acted by all of its cast, and with its own rich historically accurate reproduction and visualization, has a few changes to the original plot that for me, work. I would say if you read the novel before seeing the movie, you will experience the movie more as an insider who recognizes these changes as something complimentary to Highsmith's story. By watching the movie, you can appreciate having greater insight into Carol's part within the story.All said, the novel Carol is a worthy read for anyone who wants to read a complex yet ultimately uplifting love story that happens to be between two women who do not fit into the stereotypes for lesbian relationships of any period.

If you're like me, you know Patricia Highsmith from her Ripley crime novels. But Highsmith, writing under a pseudonym, also wrote this groundbreaking 1950s study of one woman’s sexual awakening. The release of the Hollywood adaptation, under the title “Carol,” has brought this often overlooked novel the attention it deserves. Even 60 years after its initial publication, “The Price of Salt” remains as relevant, powerful and compulsively readable as ever.The story centers around Therese, a 19-year-old aspiring set designer who suffers from a severe disconnect with the world around her and from her own identity. On the surface, she seems happy: She has a devoted boyfriend, Richard, and just got a temporary job at a department store to make some extra cash. But something’s missing from Therese’s life – something she herself can’t exactly define. (There’s a nice bit about the various ways to pronounce Therese’s name that sums up her confusion: “She was used to a dozen variations, and sometimes she herself pronounced it differently.”)Enter Carol, a mid-30-something upper-class housewife and mother who comes across as glamorous, beautifully unattainable, and moody. A shady detective, a conflicted boyfriend, and a mysterious friend from Carol's past all add to the tension.Like the best of Highsmith's novels, "The Price of Salt" doesn't shy away from the more problematic aspects of its own story. For instance, the age difference between the main characters is mentioned a number of times. (Imagine if this novel were about a heterosexual relationship between a man in his mid-30s and a 19-year-old girl.) The novel also explores Highsmith’s preoccupation with identity and, in this case, love's apparent contradiction: even as Therese finds her true self, she loses her identity in Carol's or, as Therese reflects, "she felt like an actor, remembered only now and then her identity with a sense of surprise, as if she had been playing in these last few days the part of someone else, someone fabulously and excessively lucky" in love.In the end, this shouldn't be categorized as a lesbian love story. It's a beautifully realized and meditative novel of one young woman finding the courage to "plunge headlong" into life and love. That's something anyone can relate to.

Short, sweet and full of heat, Tory Baker does it again with a May-December instalove quickie. Lightning strikes for general contractor Dex when he sees Emma for the first time, and he pulls out all the stops to win over the woman he knows is the one. Dex’s caveman routine may reduce Emma to stuttering and stumbling but it doesn’t take long to convince her that they’re meant to be.

That was fun, funny, and sweet. The Hero knows his woman when he sees her. Our delicate heroine manages to stand up for herself when necessary, but agrees with her man too. The two of them are sweet together. Enjoyable read.

Super naughty and super sweet, it was awesome and I loved it so much! ^_^

Great book

I did not like this book...at all! The male protagonist was very antagonistic. The whole story he was overly "Alpha male" and verbally abusive to the female lead. The whole book was based on doing everything he wanted and nothing she wanted. I kept thinking he was going to hit her. She got out of one abusive relationship with her parents and got right into this abusive relationship with Dex. Emma was presented as a shy, yet strong young woman, but she wasn't strong at all. The severe age difference is another turn off. This whole book put me in a very bad mood. I'm fine with the whole alpha male thing, as long as there is an alpha female along side him.

3.5 StarsThis book wasn't too bad. This was a very quick Insta love romance, it is the story of Dex and Emma.I had a few problems with it one being the age difference, he was 32 and she was 19. I usually don't have a problem with age differences but she came off as a little too innocent. Second I really wanted to know how long he was celibate for, this is just a preference for me. It stated that it had been a while but isn't specific. I liked Dex! He was definitely an OTT sexy alpha male! This is the first book that I have read from Tory Baker and I will definitely read more from her!

It was cute. Dex was very alpha, but not abusively so.... Like bratty almost? Ha - he wanted everything at lightning speed. I liked him. Emma was cute if a bit too silly. "Dex honey" It was too much. Either say his name or an endearment... Both seemed awkward. Which she was but... I don't know. It didn't flow.Dual POV but it felt like it was mostly him which I don't mind. Decently edited.With just this, I would have given a solid 4 stars but it didn't have an epilogue. This is a preference of mine, especially with short stories... I want to sneak a peek at the HEA. I'll definitely read the author again. Sweet & quick weeknight read.

I love the blue collar hero falling in love at first sight with the sweet girl next door.-no cheating-no pushing away-instalove-older man/younger woman-safe - neither are with anyone else after meeting-no om drama-OW drama- an old FB shows up and causes some grief. Could have done without that.-just ok epilogue. It was only 3 months out so not nearly enough to satisfy me

I ordered this book recently and while the text is a classic in the C. elegans field, the (paperback) copy I received was printed so badly that the images are basically useless. It looks like it came out of a badly-aligned inkjet! The quality of the printed text is OK, but nothing great.By way of comparison, I have an older edition of this book, also in paperback, that looks much better in all respects.

David Waltner-Toews is a professor of epidemiology in the Department of Population Medicine at the University of Guelph. With James Kay, Michelle Boyle, and David Cressman, he cofounded the Network for Ecosystem Sustainability and Health. I often browse the nonfiction section (or the customers also bought lists) in search of new things to learn about. In the process of this, I have read boring books, misleading/inaccurate/biased books, books about off-the-wall/niche topics, and interesting books that have allowed me to learn about a topic I likely never would have touched otherwise. The Walkable City is probably the best book I have ever found as a result of this browsing.A relatively short but insightful book written by an experienced architect, The Walkable City lays out an evidence based case for having a walkable and bikeable downtown area that is illustrated throughout with explanations of case studies and anecdotal examples. Everything is fully explained (both a basic 'this is what _____ means' as well as 'these are the implications of ____'), which - having no knowledge of civil engineering or city planning - I very much appreciated. But, what I think really makes the book (especially as a learning tool for a general audience) is the inclusion of Speck's dry and admittedly sarcastic humor. I found it hilarious and a good counterbalance to heavier topics (such as dry jokes about traffic engineers during a section on pedestrian deaths due to traffic behavior as a result road construction). Overall, I am very pleased to have stumbled across The Walkable City and it is a book that I would be happy to reccomend.

I bought this book to help support an independent study project I needed to complete for a college-level class designed around Edward Glaeser's "Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier." I knew the book would help me develop a strong and effective PowerPoint lecture for the class on my topic of walkable cities, but I had no idea how delightful it would be to read this book straight through from beginning to end as a form of pleasure. Nor did I realize how much I would learn overall about the basics of urban design. Although this book is focused on how to make cities more walkable, it really served the purpose of being an engaging introduction to the whole field of urban and city planning.After reading Speck's book, I now see my own lovely city and the many thousands that I've visited here and abroad over my life in a completely new light. This book gives me a context within which to understand why certain cities attract me and others do not. It is as if I now have a language to clearly understand cities for the first time. Honestly, you know how good it feels when you get eyeglasses for the first time and see what the world really looks like? Well, that's what this book did for me. I now see cities in a whole new light.I only wish at this book could be read by my mayor, all my city councilmen, all the citizens on our planning commission, and all the citizens in my community that have the power to vote on our city's major land use initiatives.This book is getting almost consistent five-star ratings. I can do little more than join in and whole-heartedly agree.

A truly fascinating book, Speck makes you question how the United States moved so far away from the more ideal reality of walkability. Not only does Speck succeed in making the case for walkability, he provides a clear road plan for how streets can be reclaimed and thus cities made to be safer, healthier, more vibrant and ultimately more equitable places for all Americans. The level of research and time that was put into this book shows and the comprehensive nature speaks volumes about the author and his drive to improve life in American cities. A must read for all people interested in urban planning, public health, economics, or any other subject relating to public life.

This was a different book for me to read–one about urban planning. As the title implies, the author’s basic proposition is that large urban areas are most able to thrive if they are “walkable”. Walkability is much more than providing good spaces for pedestrians, it also stresses that people, and not autos, need to be the focus of our cities. (He does apply his theories to smaller cities, but my take is that most of his suggestions are really viable only in large metropolitan areas.) The book is full of information about planning, architecture, traffic engineers, and many other subjects. Like many non-fiction work, the author seems to have engaged in exhaustive research. Sometimes such exhaustive work makes for exhausting reading, and I did find that true at times. Indeed, this could be used almost as a supplemental text for educators or planners. Walkability, as I read the book, requires some level of mass transit to in essence “create” pedestrians in the urban core. Not that no one can drive, but the more people who don’t, the more people who are on the urban streets. “Walkability explains how, to be favored, a walk has to satisfy four main conditions: it must be useful, safe, comfortable and interesting.” These terms are themselves quite subjective, but the author defines useful to mean that “***most aspects of life are located close at hand and organized in a way that walking serves them well”. Safe means “***that the street has been designed to give pedestrians a fighting chance against being hit by automobiles” . Comfortable means that “***buildings and landscapes shape urban streets into ‘outdoor living rooms’”, and interesting means “***that sidewalks are lined by unique buildings with friendly faces and that signs of humanity abound.” An example he gives of a city that lacks almost all technical aspects of walkability–good sidewalks, safe traffic, etc- but is wonderfully walkable because of being so interesting, is Rome. Anyone who has been there can appreciate the example. His basic premise is that walkablilty attracts creative people to our cities, enhancing both the culture and the economy, including the increased property values in walkable cities, as well as healthy citizens who walk or ride bikes more often. (As an aside, the author speaks a lot of Portland, Oregon-50 miles north of me-, and its commitment to walkability.) Despite the ascribed benefits of walkability, the author posits that over the last 60 years, our country has made the automobile the master of the urban environment–and the environment in general. To create, or perhaps restore walkability, the car has to relegated to its position of servant rather than master. This can be done in many ways, including getting the parking issues right, and to the benefit of pedestrians. He also notes, as mentioned above, that walkable cities must have transit. Indeed, he points out that one need only trace the relative investment in highways versus transit in American and Canadian cities to see why the latter, who invested less in highways, have more walkable, and to the author, more vibrant cities. The author goes into detail abut a great many subjects, but I will only explore one–traffic engineers. He does have a distinct bias against traffic engineers, saying most are trained to solve traffic problems, and thus the first step, at least for them, in solving every urban problem is to conduct a traffic study–usually aimed at how to better move traffic. He feels such studies are flawed for three reasons. First the computer models are flawed because, like all computer models they are only as good as the input; second, traffic studies are typically performed by firms that do traffic engineering; and third, traffic studies almost never consider what the author calls “induced demand”. The last consideration is very interesting, for the author, supported by studies, postulates that induced demand reflects the fact that increasing the supply of roadways lowers the “time cost” of driving, causing more people to drive, obliterating any reductions in congestion. In essence, investments in road capacity expansion do not ease congestion, but just add more cars to the highway. This is at first a bit counterintuitive, but, with a second thought, has a logical ring. If induced demand is a viable theory, then it has a doubly negative effect. It not only fails to reduce congestion, it adds more cars into the mix, reducing the possibility for walkability. So is congestion good? Contrary as it sounds, the answer might be “yes”. Indeed, the author notes that 7 of the 10 cities ranked worst for traffic also had “***excellent public transportation and a vast collection of walkable neighborhoods”. (The 3 that did not were Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.) Also, if induced demand is correct, why bother with spending fortunes to expand highways if you will end up with congestion anyway. I fund the whole “induced demand” scenario quite thought provoking. This is not a “beach book”, or any type of “relaxing read”. It’s full of facts, theories and a bit of technical jargon.
