I was a sociology major in college, graduating in 1971. Presently I’m retired and halfway through a seminary degree, using this book in a course titled “Encountering the City”. While the original was dated 2005 and this edition is dated 2013 many of the readings are dated from many years previous. I found this less than satisfactory. As this text was assigned I didn’t have a choice as to my purchase, but future purchasers will. Be forewarned.

Needed this for College. Item received in time frame expected. Highly recommend.

Elvis was the one guy Guralnick didn't talk to, but you feel his presence in interviews with his old guitarist Scotty Moore and former mentor Sam Phillips."He hit like a Pan-American flash, and the reverberations still linger from the shock of his arrival," Guralnick writes.There's a lot of characters, and some seem more interesting for their uniqueness (Jack Clement, Charlie Feathers) while others seem like misses altogether (who was James Talley anyway, and why should we care?) But there's some arresting profiles of those who made it and those who didn't, plus a sense of what got them there."It has to be the only thing for you - the one thing in your life," says cowboy legend Ernest Tubb. Guralnick makes it all seem worth it, for a few hundred pages at least.

My original copy went the way of all dog-eared paperbacks. I'm grateful this has been reissued. Peter Guralnick is, along with the late Robert Palmer, the best, most insightful and respectful guide to American roots music that America has produced. "Sweet Soul Music" is his masterpiece, but all his work is excellent.

I bought the book because Hank Williams is on the cover. However, it does not contain any articles about Hank Williams! It's a good book if you don't know much about country or rock and roll, but for the experienced reader, it's nothing new.

Most of Peter Guralnick's tomes have galvanized me and this is no exception. I learned lots about Hank I didn't know from this and prior to purchasing it I thought I knew quite a bit. But this may be the best book ever written about Hank Williams, Sr. Very highly recommended to anyone who loves Hank or "REAL" country music or Americana in general.

Really found this book interesting.

Bought for a gift and read it first. Glad I did. A good historical perspective of some great musicians in interesting times. If you like Country music this is a good one.

In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

I am currently working through this with a high school small group. I have found that I am mostly reviewing each chapter and then discussing the main point and scripture and then creating many of my own discussion questions. The book does have questions for the girls to discuss with an accountability partner. However I find they engage much more when we have discussions verse me talking for 45 minutes. So I do wish the book offered more discussions questions. Otherwise it's good and applicable for them!

I work in student ministry, and I used this book as a Bible study for our girls (7-12th grade). The book is relevant and very insightful, and has brought up many important conversations. I highly recommend it!

I found this book "by chance" & bought a copy, thinking it might be useful for my junior high girls. I've been using it for my Bible studies with 6th and 8th graders. This book has been excellent! I do believe it needs to be in every youth pastor's arsenal. It is so well organized, well written, so honest, so thorough, so Biblical. 6th grade is the youngest age this book is useful for, and we have skipped a couple sections that are not applicable for that age yet. But this book is definitely useful for high school and college age girls. Everyone I have recommended it to, has loved it as much as I do. Women into their 50s have borrowed my copy, have read it for themselves & learned from it. It is simply a fantastic tool!

Trina Robbins puts her years of both comic professionalism and comic fandom to effective use in her survey of The Great Women Super Heroes. She begins in the Golden Age and ends in the mid-90's and is quite thorough. The concentration of the book is on the heroines of the golden age which should be interesting for most readers as this will be the least familiar period to many of them (and readers of other comic book histories will be surprised that there were so many women heroes fighting the good fight). The section that is the most fun, though, is the discussion of the silver age and the recent period as the author allows herself a little more room for editorializing rather than simply surveying and Ms. Robbins opinions are always worth the wait. This area could even be expanded to into a book in its own right. The book is amply and appropriately illustrated. This is a great book for anyone interested in comic books and their checkered history of portraying women. But most of all it is a fun, breezy read.

I enjoyed this book a great deal, and recommend it to anyone who is interested in comic book history. I never knew that there were so many female super-characters around in the 1940s. However, I can't recommend it to anyone doing a serious research project. There are so many errors in the sections about the comics I know, that I don't know how much credence to give the rest. For example, a caption states that Supergirl debuted in Adventure Comics instead of Action Comics; the text refers to the force field powers of Jean Grey instead of Sue Storm; and the artist on the Tomboy strip is said to be Jack Kirby instead of Mort Meskin.

Celebrating the distaff side of the superheroic fraternity, Trina Robbins' examination of the place of women superheroes in comics history is a fascinating and compelling read. Yes, the expected entries are here - a lengthy analysis of Wonder Woman, for example - but countless lesser-known heroines are enumerated and critiqued, from the sidekicks and helpmeets such as Supergirl and Batgirl to stand-alone adventuresses such as the Phantom Lady and Liberty Belle.However, the book is more than merely a dry recital of history. Robbin's energetic and vivacious style emphasises not just that these characters are remembered, but why they are special, as powerful role models for girls and women in a medium too often dominated by teenage hetboy fantasies.Robbin's informed and enthusiastic text places each figure, from the 1940's to the present day, into a social context, while never losing sight of the sense-of-wonder appeal that is at the core of the comics medium.Copious illustrations liven up the text, and if a dash of colour would have helped the monochrome pages - well, there's always the next edition!

This is a solid history of superheroines from the 30s to the 90s with particular attention to those lost years between the end of WWII and the launch of Marvel comics in the early 60s.Obscure characters and creators are highlighted and given their due.A worthwhile read for anyone interested in comic history.
