  This is the third book from the Sketching from the Imagination series published by 3dtotal Publishing. I love all three of them and I hope they keep coming up with more volumes.The book is still satisfyingly thick at 320 pages. 50 artists are featured.The sketches and artworks are really beautiful and inspiring. There's a lot of variety and the artists commentary talks about their love for sketching, inspiration and some tips. Even in black and white, the designs look terrific. Once again, I'm marvelled by the level of details and intricacy of the many sketches.This particular volume focuses on sci-fi. I still see quite a significant portion on character designs, in sci-fi style of course. There are also the occasional mechas, sci-fi environments, alien plants, etc.Most highly recommended to all who loves sketchbooks.Well worth the money!(See more pictures of the book on my blog. After falling in love with the Sketching From The Imagination, I was thrilled to find the new Sci-Fi and Fantasy books and they do not disappoint. The Sci-Fi book is filled with some great art and some truly unique styles. There is a great mix of concepts from alien life forms, to spaceships, robots, mechs, spacesuits, and other wild future imaginings. The art alone is worth it. But when you add in the comments and tips from each artist, it really makes this (and the other books in this series) a great place for inspiration and for picking up new ideas and techniques. Of all my art books, the Sketching from the Imagination books are the ones I pick up most often. I love to just flip thru them at random and almost always find myself pulled in and losing track of time.I recommend these books for anyone whether you are a beginner or an expert or even if you don't draw. These books aren't books that teach you how to draw, they are books that inspire you to create.So if you want to stir your imagination, or peak behind the curtains and get inside the head of some talented artists, or just enjoy some excellent and sometimes quirky Sci-Fi art, then flip through the pages of this wonderful book. I dare you not to feel inspired to grab a pen or pencil and start some sketches of your own.

Not bad, although I expected more. The artist's selection is kind of inconsistent, some of them being quite good, and some of them being just barely acceptable. The overall artist's level is, in my opinion, underwhelming, and some of the comments or tips are absolutely obvious for anyone with a little bit of drawing skill.Now, I am not a professional artist, so I was hoping I could get some insight or inspiration to improve my own drawings. Truth is, I've only opened it once after getting the book, and I regret my purchase. Before I got this, I was hoping to get more books from the publisher, but I don't think I will, after seeing the artists featured on this one.

I got this for my 10 year old budding artist. The sketches are really fantastic and can be studied over and over, still finding something new. Some of the pictures might be a little "scary" for someone under 10-12 depending on their sensitivity to imagery. This book is geared toward teens/adults but I flipped through it and felt it was suitable for my child's maturity level.

Wonderful book for study of the styles used from different artists. Nice to reference from for science fiction art study.

The sketches in this book make for great inspiration for Sci-fi drawings. The tips the artists give are a grade above beginner, which I liked. I like that they sampled various artists to give a wide range of styles.

3d publishing keep it up you guys do great stuff

This book provided helpful tips and gives insight on how to become better at sketching.

Just buy this thing and the other two from the series! The book definitely can help you break out of an artistic slump. Beyond the numerous varied images, styles and techniques showcased, the commentary by each artist gives a really cool "human" voice the work these amazing artists create. The good, the bad and the ugly is covered as is a good dose of motivation from those who have done great work yet struggle sometimes just like everyone else. Great to read through and to reference again and again for inspiration.

I was a sociology major in college, graduating in 1971. Presently I’m retired and halfway through a seminary degree, using this book in a course titled “Encountering the City”. While the original was dated 2005 and this edition is dated 2013 many of the readings are dated from many years previous. I found this less than satisfactory. As this text was assigned I didn’t have a choice as to my purchase, but future purchasers will. Be forewarned.

Needed this for College. Item received in time frame expected. Highly recommend.

There's calls paid on Rufus Thomas, "the world's oldest teenager" whose blues-centered dances led to some early-'60s chart success; on DeFord Bailey, a harmonica whiz who was the Opry's first major star until folks figured out he was black; Hank Williams Jr., who lives up to his Daddy's tall legacy with the help of artificial stimulants and his own sense of the blues; and Charlie Rich, who was last visited in "Feel Like Going Home" as something of a straggler but grew into one of the biggest country singers of the 1970s, not that we find him here feeling too happy about it.The best writing in this collection comprises several chapters on Elvis Presley, who was still just barely alive when Guralnick wrote his first essay here in 1976 and just dead when he wrote his next right after. Elvis was the one guy Guralnick didn't talk to, but you feel his presence in interviews with his old guitarist Scotty Moore and former mentor Sam Phillips."He hit like a Pan-American flash, and the reverberations still linger from the shock of his arrival," Guralnick writes.There's a lot of characters, and some seem more interesting for their uniqueness (Jack Clement, Charlie Feathers) while others seem like misses altogether (who was James Talley anyway, and why should we care?) But there's some arresting profiles of those who made it and those who didn't, plus a sense of what got them there."It has to be the only thing for you - the one thing in your life," says cowboy legend Ernest Tubb. Guralnick makes it all seem worth it, for a few hundred pages at least.

My original copy went the way of all dog-eared paperbacks. I'm grateful this has been reissued. Peter Guralnick is, along with the late Robert Palmer, the best, most insightful and respectful guide to American roots music that America has produced. "Sweet Soul Music" is his masterpiece, but all his work is excellent.

I bought the book because Hank Williams is on the cover. However, it does not contain any articles about Hank Williams! It's a good book if you don't know much about country or rock and roll, but for the experienced reader, it's nothing new.

Most of Peter Guralnick's tomes have galvanized me and this is no exception. I learned lots about Hank I didn't know from this and prior to purchasing it I thought I knew quite a bit. But this may be the best book ever written about Hank Williams, Sr. Very highly recommended to anyone who loves Hank or "REAL" country music or Americana in general.

Really found this book interesting.

Bought for a gift and read it first. Glad I did. A good historical perspective of some great musicians in interesting times. If you like Country music this is a good one.

In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

I am currently working through this with a high school small group. I have found that I am mostly reviewing each chapter and then discussing the main point and scripture and then creating many of my own discussion questions. The book does have questions for the girls to discuss with an accountability partner. However I find they engage much more when we have discussions verse me talking for 45 minutes. So I do wish the book offered more discussions questions. Otherwise it's good and applicable for them!

I work in student ministry, and I used this book as a Bible study for our girls (7-12th grade). The book is relevant and very insightful, and has brought up many important conversations. I highly recommend it!

I found this book "by chance" & bought a copy, thinking it might be useful for my junior high girls. I've been using it for my Bible studies with 6th and 8th graders. This book has been excellent! I do believe it needs to be in every youth pastor's arsenal. It is so well organized, well written, so honest, so thorough, so Biblical. 6th grade is the youngest age this book is useful for, and we have skipped a couple sections that are not applicable for that age yet. But this book is definitely useful for high school and college age girls. Everyone I have recommended it to, has loved it as much as I do. Women into their 50s have borrowed my copy, have read it for themselves & learned from it. It is simply a fantastic tool!

Excellent book for teens. One of my favorites. Not the typical it is all about me books. Written by author who has been a youth pastor's wife and worked with teen girls for several years.
