The book's essence goes far beyond the social constructs of the time it was written, and its message is readily applicable to mastery of sales, whether products or services.

I've been in the Financial Services business for over 20 years, and since day one, I've been told to present charts, stats, figures, etc. to clients. This type of process is shoved down our throats in this industry.Fortunately, I "got it" long ago and began including right-brain thinking into my presentations. This book, however, has crystallized those beliefs and taken me to the next level.West and Anthony have hit upon a concept that is not necessarily new; however, they have done an excellent job of bringing storyselling to a conscious level for the niche that includes Financial Advisors.I make decisions for myself and my family via careful analysis of facts (or so I think); however, after much thought (pun not intended), I now realize that my emotions play a larger part of that decision-making process. If I "feel" right about something, it's a done deal. Having stated that fact, I wonder: why should my clients be any different?We all think in pictures. Contemplate this: when someone tells you something (or you read something), does your mind see the words they say or that you read? No! You see pictures, photos, etc. This is the way we think, and this is the way sales and communication must be approached. This is an excellent book that goes to the heart of interpersonal communication in regards to the marketing of financial services but the principals laid out really do apply to any walk of life. Of course, the art of persuasion can be either for good or for greed in this case. I would hope that whoever sits down with individuals and families has it within them to do the right thing and provide financial services for their customer's needs and not just to create personal revenue from a transaction. I was part of a financial seminar given for financial advisers in which Mr. West was a speaker. He indeed embodies the content of this book and I'm sure would have been wildly successful in any avenue of sales or whatever he pursued.

Everyone else has said how good this book is and agree with them.If you want the electronic version, you must download to iPad or something of similar size because the book is downloaded as an image and if you are using a phone or Paperwhite, you will need to zoom in and swipe left to right throughout the entire book.

Good content, but as with most sales books I read, I always think to myself, "Geez, they could have written this book with half as many words and charged me a lot less for the book."This one is no different. Love the content, but it could have been a shorter less expensive read in my opinion and been just as effective.

Not worth reading, at least by a doctor. Went to Goodwill.

This book touches on experiences many of us in the medical profession either personally went through or know someone who went through them but were never properly addressed.

good book

When this book was on my Vine list, it had not yet been published, so all I had to go on was the two paragraph description which mentioned several American television shows as proof of our fascination with doctors. My late father was also a doctor, so I was curious to see what this book had to say versus what happened in my own home.So I was rather dismayed, and feeling a bit mislead, when it turned out to to be a book almost exclusively about the training of doctors in the UK. There were some comparisons to the US, mostly on how primary care was emphasized more in the UK than in the US as a specialty and how doctors in the UK were encouraged to seek therapy when needed which is almost verboten in the US.The book concentrates on three distinct levels - medical school, residency and going into practice. These were interesting but difficult to relate to as it is so different for the US medical system. Doctors in the UK have the NHS so for the most part they do not have an insurance company telling them how to practice medicine. My doctor friends here universally state that the biggest reason for displease in their profession to the sense of being hogtied to the whims of an insurance provider who may or may not have any medical training.I have two doctor friends, a psychiatrist and a primary care doctor who would like to read this book. After they do, I will amend this review to give their insights.

Dr. Elton is a vocational psychologist who works with doctors. This has put her in place to have firsthand experience with the mental problems they have. She also obviously does a lot of research on it; she cites studies and statistics fluently.Doctors have pretty much the hardest training of any occupation. It’s not just the book learning that’s hard; it’s also the long hours, and the helpless feeling when tossed into the hospital and they are suddenly responsible for patients. Everyone knows a doctor or two with a big ego, but there are probably just as many who constantly fear they will not be good enough. As in any profession, they face racism and sexism. There is never time for family or even sleep. They sometimes have patients die. It’s not easy. The book is heavy on the subject of new doctors entering training; I assume this must be the time of the most stress since it’s emphasized. It’s mostly on the NHS system, although she does give some time to the American system.The book was interesting, but not quite as interesting as I’d hoped. I think I was hoping for more case studies; the book was too heavy on the statistics for me (although I do realize a book like this *had* to have statistics). The chapters seemed to be arbitrarily divided and just sort of blended into each other. Three stars.

At least I didn't. This book is written by a Psychologist, Dr. Catherine Elton, who specializes in physicians having mental health issues. She talks about things that I had thought about, like how a physician deals with having to tell a family that their baby had died to things that never occurred to me, like doctors feeling trapped because they feel they chose the wrong specialty and the ramifications of that decision. She compares how doctors in Britain, Australia and New Zealand (and their associated governments and medical societies) or the US deal with mental health issues in physicians and the differences between those places. For example, in the US, a doctor's choce of specialty is strongly influenced by how much debt they expect to carry when they are finished with their education. In other countries it is not a serious consideration, although Britain tripled the fees a physician must pay to be trained and the financial considerations are beginning to loom larger in a doctor's choice of specialty.Dr. Elton also treats medical students and residents as they wind their way through the system, trying to learn while working often superhuman hours and having to function as free labor for the doctors who are supposed to be training them. Not all doctors have to work 80+ hours a week (the limit in the US, although it is widely ignored in hospitals. The other countries largely limit doctors in training to about 40-ish hours a week. It is also ignored, but to a lesser degree), trying to learn while haivng to make some of the most difficult decisions in their lives. How trained medical personnel have learned to dread July (or August in the UK), because the doctor treating you may have graduated from med school a few weeks before and you might be the time your doctor makes life-changing decisions without someone to help them. Some Interns are tasked with telling familty members that their child has died, simply because they are the lowest member of the food chain and the more experienced doctors don't want to have to do it. (Nice, huh?Doctors aren't the only ones feeling stress. Dr. Elton has had to talk many young medical students off the ledge of a building, so to speak. Many smart young people are pressured into becoming doctors because of cultural expectations or to fulfill parental dreams. After all, if your kid is very smart, it's a lot more prestigious to speak about "your child the doctor" instead of "your child the web site programmer," even though the pay scales are comparable.Because of these expectiations, and because young people are expected to make career choices that effect their entire lives before the ink on their high school diplomas is dry. Making changes to a specialty can spell financial rin and career suicide, even though a student probably hasn't heard of all the specialties and subspecialties out there, is not an excuse. Neither is the fact that the person making the decision is too young to buy a beer in the US, on the grounds that kids cannot make such important decisions at that age. It's no surprise that despite the fact that seeking mental health care is considered a sign of weakness in the medical communion, a lot of young people attempt or succeed at suicide at rates far higher than that of the general population.The book is a fascinating look behind the sheet that serves as a wall in most hospital rooms, and will help you cut your own doctor a break when she says that she's exhausted after having to work the previous weekend to cover for a doctor who couldn't be there. (Perhaps because she gave birth to her own child the previous day, and the "tough guy" attitude shown by many medical staffers keeps junior physicians from asking for time off, no matter what the reason might be.The book is pretty small, and a real page turner, although I took a few breaks to think about what Dr. Elton was communicating. Easy recipes, that never seem to fail.

I have a whole shelf of recipe books for Passover, and A Taste of Pesach is the one I keep reaching for again and again. The recipes look fancy but are actually simple to make. Directions are clear and easy. Pictures are beautiful and realistic. And the editors must have tested these recipes thoroughly because I have never had a recipe turn out badly, or had to make a major correction on measurements or flavor. Fantastic recipe book, along with A Taste of Pesach 1.

Not as good as the first . Unless u like to focus presentation and don’t mind a patchke. A lot of recipes use crepes, which are too annoying for me to make. I prefer easier and more basic recipes

Wouldn't it be great if someone collected the section properties of all the standard steel shapes into a single handy reference?Oh wait.I'm more of a machine designer than a structures guy and to be honest I do find this book kind of clunky to use. But I certainly don't regret buying it. (Used, we don't have to comply with the codes it references.)

I was required to buy this book for a steel design course, and was annoyed at first with how expensive and bulky this book was, since I assumed we would only be using it for the tables. Once I knew how to use the book, though, I grew quite fond of it. Not only are the tables clearly marked, but the Manual and the commentary in the back were better than our textbook at explaining which equations to use and how to apply them. We now call this book our "Bible" because it has helped and guided us through our steel courses, lol. It was the best money I ever spent on a textbook, and I'm not even considering ever giving the "Bible" up.** EDIT 08/24/2013 **Since my last review, I've graduated college and started working. This is the only college "textbook" that has crossed international borders with me where I still use it for quick reference. And after 2 years of getting tossed around in a backpack, and then getting squashed in luggage, it's held up pretty well.

Keep in mind that there is a 14th edition now. However, this manual is still an excellent reference for practicing engineers. I got it some time ago. It contains both LRFD and ASD design guidelines; I use the ASD once and a while to check work from other engineers. However, the book is intended for LRFD mainly, and the charts are great.

The book was in excellent condition, so very pleased about that. In this condition, I was hoping the steel member selection CD would have been included, but unfortunately not. Still a good buy though.

If you want to fabricate with steel, then this is your bible.

I constantly re-read chapters to see what other things I can do to try to get things out of my apartment. I have a large apartment for two people and it seems to still be filled with stuff. This helped me realize both me and my husbands inner pack rat and get rid of a lot of things.Highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to make their life a little less hectic.

I enjoy reading books about minimalism for inspiration to furthur purge and organize my home. The author had me with her for quite a while - but around 80% through - it became an oddly church-y book?! I had not picked up the book for religious inspiration. I glazed over her first few references, appreciating them slightly - but once it became the main thrust of her narrative, I finally had to put the book down. If you want to read a book about becoming a better Christian in addition to minimalism, this may not be a problem for you.

Have read Lorilee's book on the Kindle and am now waiting for the print version to arrive in the post. This book covers the whole spectrum of your life from your cupboards to your spirituality. It caused me and my fmaily to re-evaluate our possessions and use of time - an ongoing process leading to much debate! This was a simple book that was easy and quick to read. It had good reminders of why you should live your life simply and mindfully in order to be a blessing to those around you.

Really enjoy the author's mellow attitude and kind gentle process of liquidating stuff (or for those who don't want to, to not). It was a light read full of helpful tips that was just the right perspective for me to hear. Enjoyed viewing her blog briefly as well.

I loved reading this over time on my Kindle. It is courageous and inspiring. Includes helpful ideas too. I may follow her on line.

This is a much better book than the other book by the authors, 60 Million French Men Can't Be Wrong, and in my opinion, also more revealing about the French. There are a few inconsistencies here and there, and perhaps this doesn't meet academia level (but then most interesting reads doesn't) but the weird attitude they had in the other book is subdued so that it is intelligent. I dd think it was a bit weird that they called the historical building of the Academy "shabby chic" disparagingly, that's what makes Europe beautiful. It's not all new and thrown up in one century. But overall and as far as I've read, it's what I've been looking for.

Being native French I have enjoyed this book enormously. Well researched, well documented and well written. A trove of interesting facts, particularly if you have studied Latin for 6 years, ancient Greek for 4 years and are French-English bilingual. The evolution of the language is nothing short of fascinating.

This is that rare combination - an instructive book on a scholarly subject that reads like a summer beach novel. I've always been fascinated by language, and this was a real eye-opener. It connected all the dots on how one of major Western languages developed and spread throughout the world. Fascinating!

As a speaker of English who learnt French as a second language, this book gives me hope. In a world that values English and only English overall, this masterpiece of facts and the authors' perspectives prove that the French language does have clout and a promising future. However, everything could go left and turn sour; yet, we will not know the future until it comes.French is of value to our global community in spite of English in my opinion and I stand by that due to reading this work of brilliance.Plurilingualism is key to keeping French relevant and adaptive.Vive la langue française et je vous remercie pour écrire ce livre !

I had read one of the previous books by these authors, on France the country, and learned from it immensely. This book is as good, if not better: thorough to a fault, balanced to a fault, not afraid to state the truth or to offer a reasoned judgement. It is not an etymological study, like those available for English, but rather an examination of where French came from, how it developed and spread and the state of the language today. Detailed examination of French "outremer" (overseas), especially in Quebec and West Africa. Oh, yes, it's also very funny!

This was a second purchase as I lost my first copy. I found this book absolutely fascinating the first time around, and the second read was an enjoyable review.Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of languages. I especially found interesting the close relationship between French and modern English. Very readable.

I give this book an A for adeptly painting the big picture of the French language- cultural roots, history, evolution, and future. This book is also a celebration of a multicultural world view drawn from diligent research. The writing is clear and insightful as well.
