Amazing read, especially given that she was 60 and went alone on a bicycle.

Ms. Dervla Murphy, an intrepid and brave woman, takes us on a bicycle journey in Southeastern Africa (Kenya to Uganda to Tanzania to Malawi to Zambia and finally Zimbabwe). We experience these countries via her bicycle and her opinionated eyes.I did some cycling in North America when I was much younger; Ms. Murphy is doing this at the age of sixty on roads that are far tougher than anything here in North America – many of her roads were unpaved. She definitely has an iron constitution!The vitality of this book is the many different encounters the author has with groups of people – many of them very poor. Her trajectory, which she did in the early ‘90’s, takes her through AIDS ravaged areas. She did not know at the beginning of her journey that AIDS was to dominate every conversation she had. There are remarkable discussions which ensue revolving around the epidemic, the role of women, the use (or non-use) of condoms, polygamy, and Africa’s growing role in the world. Some of the people she meets have had their entire families lost (or in the process of) to the AIDS epidemic.Because she is cycling and a woman, she is anomaly. The cycling puts her on an eye-level contact with everyone.What is very reassuring is the needed and unsolicited assistance she gets, now and then, from the most destitute of people – male and female.It is sad to think that since this book was written over twenty years ago, most of the people she met have likely died.This is a very worthwhile book for the diversity of encounters and the energy of Ms. Murphy. But we know you have another tradition.”

Since 1964 Irish writer Murphy has been traveling the world by foot and bicycle and writing about her experiences. An outspoken loner, drawn to the more remote parts of the globe, her beautiful but rugged experiences fascinate and educate the armchair traveler - without inspiring similar ambitions.As a 60th birthday present to herself, Murphy undertakes a 3,000 mile journey through Eastern and Southern Africa on her Dawes Ascent mountain-bike, "the cyclist's equivalent of a Rolls-Royce," named Lear. The trip was a "self-described unwinding therapy.....a carefree ramble through some of the least hot areas of sub-Saharan Africa."But "carefree" it is not, though nothing - not heat, torrential rains, hunger, illness, hostility or impassable roads - can stop her.Murphy is greeted in Nairobi by drought and a mothers' hunger strike which rapidly degenerates into a riot when paramilitary troops arrive to disperse the women. Leaving the city as quickly as she can, Murphy contemplates the contrast between Western luxuries and construction projects alongside the shanty towns and hungry children.From her first stop in a dusty village for a Tusker beer, AIDS predominates and a pattern is set which endures thoughout the lands and cultures she passes through during the coming months. By day she enjoys the solitude and scenery of rural Africa; by night she is embroiled in local discussions of politics and Western incursions and AIDS, often dodging individual pleas for help in getting to the land of opportunity - the West.Ukimwi is Swahili for AIDS. In Africa, wherever she goes, it surrounds her. Some blame Western conspiracies and medical experiments; missionaries preach behavioral changes and deny condom distribution; men say they cannot survive without a variety of female partners; wives say their husbands refuse condoms; prositutes say they would have no business if they insisted on condom use.Everywhere Murphy meets widows, orphans and more orphans.She at first resists the pull of AIDS. For her this is a pleasure journey and she can do nothing to slow the epidemic. But it has become part of the fabric of culture, threatening traditional family life, taking the most productive and leaving behind the old and the young to fend for themselves.In addition to the scourge of AIDS, Murphy finds much of Africa suffering from economic collapse, spurred in large part by misguided Western "development projects" that destroyed the local agrarian economy, often displacing the people and departing, leaving behind devastation and tribal strife.She meets hospitality and hostility, and takes what comes; be it a bedbug, mosquito-infested tourist hotel, or an earthen floor, or a spontaneously offered bed in a local home. She sets out at dawn hardly knowing whether to expect a corrugated wartorn road or spectacular mountain scenery or a beguiling path that ends in a swamp (through which she is guided by a silent tribal elder). She pushes Lear up rutted mountain tracks and hurtles down, marveling at the African cyclists she meets everywhere - man cycling, two children on the cross bar, wife behind holding baby and toddler, and a heavy load balanced over all.With a cast-iron stomach, she eats and drinks whatever is available (which is generally awful), especially enjoys her beer, cycles through bronchitis and is finally felled by malaria. Even that she comes to regard as fitting - ending her journey in Zimbabwe where "Blacks had been subjugated as nowhere else in British Africa." And it has good historical backdrops and provocative philosophical musings on development and politics in Africa.Dervla takes no prisoners in humorously highlighting flaws in herself, elitists, traditionalists, expat development bandits, and ambivalent White Africans. Having conducted research and travelled in Africa over many years, I found her questions, naive mistakes, and ability to adapt to situations amazing. I recalled learning to love nshima in Zambia in 1984, as there was seldom anything else to eat. I recalled being hassled by immigration officials for travelling with "too little foreign exchange to support myself." And I relived the horror of having a corrupt border patrol officer pocket my passport and walk away.Dervla had the fortitude and charm to come out on top every time: perhaps taking advantage of her privileged/vulnerable status as a woman tourist from Europe. I had to use different tactics as a long-term resident who's an African American man. I bought this book on a lark for $3 at the World Bank Bookstore. I'll be back for more copies. It's a shame that it's out of print.

I must preface my remarks by admitting that I am, apparently, a literary phillistine. Most works of acclaimed literature fail to interest me and prove to be a slog to get through. I am left wondering whether I am somehow unequipped to appreciate fine literature, or whether, in fact, the Emperor is wearing no clothes. Suffice it to say, when reading for pleasure, I rarely gravitate to the classics or Pulitzer prize winners.That said, it is a real pleasure when I can find myself truly enjoying what is considered a great work of literature. At such times, I begin to believe there may be hope for me after all. Such was the case with Cold Mountain, Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and most recently, Middlesex.This novel weaves a fascinating tale, in three distinct threads, through the eyes and emotions of a hermaphrodite. The story begins through the narration of a now middle aged foreign service bureaucrat, Cal Stephanides. Cal was born a "female", but upon reaching puberty, began demonstrating the secondary sexual characteristics of a male. The story then reverts to Cal's grandparents as they immigrate from a war torn Asia Minor. From that point, the story flows smoothly back and forth from the ancestors, to Cal's (Calliope's) childhood and to the present day in a surprisingly seemless fashion.The story is gripping, both for the history imparted (most particularly Turko-Greek relations in Asia Minor in the post WWI years and the growth and decay of Detroit) as well as for the lives of the primary characters. A minor thread touching upon the foundation of the Nation of Islam in Detroit is particularly entertaining. And throughout, the writing is extraordinary without being oppressively dense.When reading a book of this quality, I'm constantly reminded that, at least in my opinion, the underlying essence of a good book lies in the artistic telling of a captivating story. The finest writing on the planet cannot cover for a story that either goes nowhere or is simply boring (Suite Francaise comes immediately to mind). This fine novel has both, outstanding writing and a fascinating story with which to demonstrate it. Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved this book. It was recommended to me by a Greek friend who grew up in the Detroit area. Once I got through the first few chapters I could not put it down and now I see why they say its one of the books you must read before you die. The writing is amazing and just flows and Calliope's story kept me captivated. When I was finished I was disappointed in the ending because I wanted more and felt the author couldn't leave it there as I wanted to know so much more at the protagonist. But I realized that's the true sign of a good book, you don't want to let the characters go because you come so invested in them and their story. I would recommend this book to anyone and have already lent it out to a few folks.

A gem of a novel spanning several generations of family members plagued by unique relationships and genetic combinations leading to hermaphroditic outcomes. Well written and researched, I believe, we are voyeaurs to the unusual circumstances resulting in seemingly authentic disclosure. The vocabulary is extensive and explains very well what the author is experiencing. A very intriguing slice of life, covering the 60's in Detroit, all the way back to the Greek Exodus of Turkey at the turn of the century.

I wasn’t sure the topic of hermaphroditism would be of interest to me, but this was a beautifully written piece about generations of family and their legacy of struggle. The sections on hermaphroditism were well done and gave one a sympathetic and more thorough understand of the spectrum of gender and the delicate dance of hormones needed to create it.

With engaging erudition rendered in a unique voice, Jeffrey Eugenides displays his, at the time, evolving talent as a novelist in this monumental undertaking. Describing the emergence of an early 20th Century Greek family which subsequently expands into a generational saga, and with our protagonist being the narrator, this work combines an abounding array of anectodal conditions with stunning human drama to form an enlightening and expository historical novel.Eugenides, taking on the guise of Callie Stephanides an American born hermaphrodite, tells a story of the American ideal...Europeans coming to the New World with limited expectations but grand hopes. Desdemona and Lefty Stephanides, biologically brother and sister, survive the 1922 Great Smyrna Fire, which destroyed the now eastern Turkish city of Izmir, and fraudulently gain access to passage which exports them to America. There, from New York harbor and the Statue of Liberty, they make their way to Detroit and begin to procreate a lineage of Greek-strong migrants. Callie is a third generational offspring who becomes Cal, a man and United States Ambassador. Cal's childhood though is rendered as "Callie," a hermaphrodite, who is Eugenides engine for this story. Acting as a girl for her entire youth, Eugenides describes the inherent difficulties that she faces as an hermaphroditic offspring...both biological and psychological.Couched in turbulent 1960s Detroit, we follow Callie as she struggles mightily with her identity. Espousing virtually all there is to know about this condition, Eugenides combines exacting, almost excruciating, research with the emotional drama of a child unexpectedly realizing that her sex is ambiguous. In episode after episode, we watch as Callie slowly realizes her dilemma and her subsequent efforts to rationalize it. Discarding parental and family emotions, she becomes a "he" while experiencing the expected hardships associated with such a life changing move. Deep and sometimes flawed personal insights abound as this transformation slowly grows. We're, at the end, left with Cal, the man and principal combatant who becomes the literal hero of the work.Although sometimes overwhelming and unnecessarily provocative, this work is nonetheless a tour de force. Then the word "exoteric" pops up -- exotic is what I think the author meant, as it modifies "culture."Emma Linfield, while you can quote/paraphrase Shakespeare nicely, you need either a beta reader who knows a bit more than you do or a fact checker.

They may have meet when they were children but do to a family grudge they were never able to have a friendship and now as adults Noah wants to court Emmaline but can two families forgive a terrible tragedy and where is Emmeline. Also there is blackmail in play and criminal's as well things may get worse before they get better for these two. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and I purchased one as well.

Lady Emmeline Grant and Noah Fitzroy, the handsome Duke of Newberry are suppose to to be bitter enemies because of a family feud. But how can Lady Emmeline hate the man she is drawn to? When the Duke of Newberry becomes involved in a murder scandal, he is concerned if Lady Emmeline's feelings for him will change. Why are so many people warning her not to become involved with the Duke of Newberry? Will the beautiful Lady Emmeline find true love in the arms of the handsome Duke of Newberry? What about the family feud?This is an enjoyable book. I really liked the characters and could feel their despair when people were trying to keep them separated. Ms. Linfield never disappoints. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, this is my true and honest opinion.

Emmeline and Noah are in love yet there has been a feud between their families.Why? What kept it going decade after decade? Why can’t it stop, who is determinedto keep it fresh in everyone’s mind?What happened to Emmeline? Is she dead? Poor Noah, he is devastated as is herbrother George. Will Noah and George join together to unravel the mystery behindEmmeline’s Death or will they continue the hatred between their families?This book is so very interesting, touching, sad, filled with excitement and love,mysterious happenings. I very very highly recommend this book! I was deeplyImpressed with this story. Don’t forget to get the Extended Epilogue too!It’s wonderful.

This one will keep you reading for sure!! What the women in this novel have to do to end the long standing family feud between the two families is unbelievable. As for the wicked old grandmother-------oh is she a trouble maker----And the two Dukes--STUBBORN to the core--Will Emma's disappearance and possible death bring them together--or make things worse--As always once you have read this there is a place where you can click in and read a short story about what happens after the story ends---I truly appreciate this and so should you.

First I apologize for delay in review. Afraid Christmas got in the way.The book was awesome and enjoyed the love, mystery, loss, intrigue and sadness. Wasn't sure all would turn out right, but sure enough, it did!!Keep.writing these exciting books and I'll keep.reading them!!Love them! B.J.

What a wonderful story of true love, old foolish feuds, meddling and unforgiving family, and suspenseful intrigue. I had to keep reading into the night to see who was truly behind the fate of the lovely, sweet Emmeline. Noah would not give up on his true love. If you like regency romance and intrigue, you NEED to read this one! (...and all her other books, as they are great too!) Emma Linfield does not disappoint! What are you waiting for?! Go read it!

This was a Tremendous story! A little slow in starting but once I last a few chapters I couldn't put it down! Noah had such an evil grandmother but his mother was amazing. Not sure yet how I feel about Em's supposed death but it was GREAT reading and extended epilogue was all it could be!

I'm not a great mechanic, but I know which way to turn a wrench, I know how to follow instructions, and I know that whenever I buy an old car or motorcycle the next purchase should be the Clymer manual. I bought this volume to help me get a cantankerous 1973 CB125S running smooth, and it did. The detailed instructions on adjusting the carb were contrary to what some internet experts recommended but the Clymer instructions got the bike purring. Everything I needed to know- chain tension, rebuilding the fork, replacing the front brake shoes- was in this volume. When I sold the CB and bought a 74 XL125, I found everything I needed here, too. I've since sold the XL, but I'm hanging on to the manual. You never know when another little 70s Honda might catch your eye.

I've got a Honda CB125S. If I'm going to service it, this is my only option.It is a good service manual. No problems with it so far. Well written and clear-- at least to someone who's been into service manuals in the past.

This is a very interesting book. Saroo Breirley at age 5 mistakenly gets aboard a train andtravels far from home. He was totally lost. At age 5 he did not even know the name of his village, therefore he wandered the streets of Calcutta, homeless and alone for many weeks.Finally, he was placed in an institution from which he was adopted. He was reared by a loving couple who lived in Tasmania. As an adult he researched for years to locate his village. He remembered a road, a train station, and a water tank. Due to the tech age he was ableto find the village using Google Earth satellite . After 25 years Saroo isreunited with his family. His family had been and were still poor. In the years since they were united Saroo has been able to help them. He has returnedto India several times. This story received lots of press coverage and evena special on 60 minutes. Saroo writes well and tells his story with great skill.

As a lover of a good story, I give this short but powerful book a solid five stars. As a mother, there aren't enough stars available.to express my admiration for the way Brierley processed and portrayed his relationship with his two families. He honored and loved them both, and regardless of which mother I might have been in this circumstance, my heart would be full, and I would not have felt shortchanged.

This book tells an amazing story. There is simply no other way to describe it. It is the real-life story of Saroo, a five-year-old child in a village in central India, who gets lost and finds himself transported all the way east to Calcutta, some 1800 kms away. Young Saroo, all of five, penniless and illiterate, does not even know the name of his village and knows little else about where he was from. He gets off at the bustling, crowded Howrah train station and survives for six weeks in the intimidating bad and mean streets of Calcutta by his instincts and luck. He ends up at a benevolent orphanage called ISSA, where the kindly Ms.Saroj Sood - tries to find his family and re-unite him. But all Saroo can tell was that he was from Ginestlay, which is what he remembered as his village's name. He also mistakenly says that he travelled just overnight by train when in reality he had travelled almost 24 hours to get to Calcutta. After a couple of moths' futile effort, Mrs.Sood pronounces him 'lost' and organizes him to be adopted by Sue and John Brierley, a young couple from Tasmania, Australia.Saroo is lovingly brought up by the Brierleys and he grows up into a happy and well-integrated Aussie over the next 20 years. However Saroo always wonders about his origins, with clear memories of his birth mother Kamala, his kid sister Shekila and elder brothers Kallu and Guddu, whom he looked up to as a child two decades before. He starts working on trying to find where he was from by using the feeble memories of his childhood. All he had to go by was that there was a train station whose name was something like 'Berampur' , that it had a water tower, an overpass across the tracks and that the town had a fountain near a cinema. His village 'Ginestlay' was somewhere nearby and that they were all reachable overnight by train from Calcutta. Gradually, over five years, with incredible patience and perseverance , Saroo, at age 30, using Google Earth's satellite images and Facebook, miraculously locates the train station with the identifying features of his childhood. He notes that a nearby town is called Khandwa and that there is a Facebook group belonging to people from Khandwa. He contacts them and gets the key info that there is a nearby village called Ganesh Talai - the 'Ginestlay' of 5-year-old Saroo! Saroo soon goes to India and reconnects with his birth family to the great delight of his elderly mother Kamala and his siblings Shekila and Kallu, who are now married with children. Sadly, Guddu, his eldest brother whom he adored as a child, was killed in an accident just on the same day that Saroo got lost 25 years before. Otherwise, it is a happy resolution for Saroo.Not only Saroo, but his Aussie parents, Sue and John as well, come off as wonderful, loving and caring parents and individuals. Sue herself was a WWII refugee from Hungary and her story is also inspring as told it in the book. Saroo's birth mother Kamala is another remarkable woman, who never gave up hope that her son Sheru (which is his correct name!) would return one day. Hence she never moved from the shack where she lived so that she will be there when Saroo comes back! The other heroes in the book are the internet, Google Earth and Facebook! It is a great tribute to these wonderful technologies which make it possible for the adult Saroo to sit ten thousand miles away in Hobart, Australia and exactly locate the water tower and overpass of his childhood memory and find out the correct name of his village. Let no one denounce technology again!I found the book moving, inspirational and one of hope and the indomitable spirit of the humankind. It is a story of triumph against great odds. Going through the early chapters where Saroo survives for six weeks as a five-year-old in Calcutta, I had palpitations as I felt anxious that nothing terrible should befall young Saroo! The book also has a special appeal for me since I grew up in India and lived for 13 years in wonderful Australia.

Everyone can benefit from going on this amazing journey with a young man who exhibits tenacity, resolve and grace in his search for his birth family and his devotion to both his adopted and birth families.

I'm not giving much away by quoting a stranger the author met as a grown-up on his mission to find the family he lost at age 5. Finding his former home unoccupied and having no idea where to look next, he encountered a man who said to him, "Wait here. I will take you to your mother."At age 5, Saroo Brierley fell asleep on a train in India and couldn't find his way home. By luck he was placed in an orphanage and adopted by an Australian couple. He spent years combing his memory of places and landmarks in India, tracing them on Google Earth from his home in Australia, and finally solving the mysteries of how he got lost, traveling back to India, and finding his way home. As the title says, "ALong Way Home."This may be the most fascinating book I ever read. I couldn't put it down, even though I myself have never been to India or Australia. It is an amazing story.

It's both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story.When 5-year-old Saroo is accidentally separated from his Indian family at a train station, he ends up surviving on the streets of Kolkata (Calcutta) on his own for 2-3 weeks before being taken to an orphanage. He's quickly adopted by an Australian family, John and Sue Brierley.Fast-forward 25 years, and Saroo chooses to search for his biological family, which he does with the help of Google Maps, Google Earth and Facebook. In a country of almost 1.3 billion people, he manages to find the three he cares most about.It's an inspiring story, and one I devoured quickly. My heart broke as he describe the poverty of India, and I cried as he described his adoptive mother and birth mother meeting and embracing for the first time.The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I feel the writing was bland at times, and some details are repeated over and over again. However, I credit that to Brierly being a first-time writer, and let's be honest—sharing your life's story, especially one as unique as his, can't be an easy task. All in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone.

I wanted to read this before seeing the movie - very interesting and tugs on your heartstrings to hear how difficult life is for so many. How the author finds his family is truly amazing.
