The Lightning Dreamer: Cuba's Greatest Abolitionist, by Margarita Engle

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Engle’s historical novel in verse is a fictionalized biography of the nineteenth-century Cuban abolitionist poet Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, known as Tula. Told in multiple voices, Engle’s elegant verses, rich in simile and metaphor, focus on the poet’s life as a teenager. Forbidden access to books because her mother believes reading and writing make women unattractive, Tula escapes to a nearby convent. There, she discovers volumes by the rebel poet José María de Heredia, whose words feed her own rebellious spirit, which is exemplified by her rejection of two arranged marriages. I long to write like Heredia, she muses, but what do I know of great cities and the wide lives of men? I’m just a silenced girl. My stories are simple tales of emotion. Seen as an outcast and a madwoman, she is sent to the country, where she falls in love with Sab, a freed slave, and continues to write about equality for slaves and for women. Engle’s richly evocative verses conjure up a time when women, like slaves, were regarded as property to be sold into loveless marriages. This is the context for a splendid novel that celebrates one brave woman who rejected a constrained existence with enduring words that continue to sing of freedom. Grades 7-12, --Michael Cart

Poetic dystopian? Well, not really but in this gorgeously written, wonderful little book the author describes a girl ahead of her time whose voice cannot be quieted despite many attempts by her mother and mother country. Engle's "Tula" rejects the status quo of slavery and women as property. She is ahead of her time and "fights" injustices through words, stories and actions. She pays a price for her voice because silence is unbearable. A beautiful book.

I have never been disappointed by one of Margarita Engle’s books and The Lightning Dreamer is no exception. It’s the fascinating true story of a Cuban woman who worked both for the abolition of slavery and equal rights for women. My guess is that many of you have never heard of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellanda, I certainly hadn’t. Engle’s ability to bring to life these lesser known but incredibly important historical characters is part of what makes her work so significant. Her novels in verse make historical characters like Tula accessible and real to younger readers. In writing this review, I was reminded of my obsession with biographies when I was in elementary school. When I was eight years old I decided that I was going to read every biography in my school’s library. Our biographies were shelved alphabetically by the name of the person the book was about. When I think about the books that I read then, I remember a number of books about Davy Crockett, Grover Cleveland and Amelia Earhart. Obviously, I didn’t make it all the way through, it would seem I stopped somewhere around E. But in thinking back, I’m struck by the lack of diversity in the people represented on my library’s shelves. I can only hope that with the availability of books like that of Engle things aren’t the same now. If books such as The Lightning Dreamer, The Surrender Tree, or Hurricane Dancers had been available to me then, I may have made it past E in my quest to read all those biographies. In telling the story of Tula, Engle’s book opens up a number of relevant topics for classroom discussion. As Tula becomes increasingly aware of the disparities in society, she begins to both ponder and write about things such as slavery, interracial marriage, and women’s rights. Tula grapples with these moral and ethical dilemmas in a language that invites students to question and struggle with her. She provides a way to teach our younger students about times when equal rights for people of color and women were explicitly denied. While it’s important to continue to discuss the ways in which equality is still not a reality for all people today, it’s just as important to discuss the historical contexts that our contemporary struggles for equality come from.Engle gives us a strong female protagonist who fights to remain authentic to the things she believes in, but in doing this, Engle also shows how hard it is to be that kind of person. It’s never easy to go against main stream society or to be the outcast among one’s friends or family. Through Tula, Engle gives voice to what it feels like to be alienated or exiled for one’s beliefs. These are powerful ideas for our students to think about—both those who can identify with Tula’s loneliness and those who realize they may be like the people who mocked Tula for being different. Tula is a powerful character, not just because of what she believed, but because of how she chose to stand up for those beliefs. She fought for equality and human rights through her stories and her poetry. She used the power of words as a means to change the minds of those around her. How valuable a lesson for the students in our classrooms—that our words are one of the most powerful tools we have for fighting against the things that try to hold us back. I’ll leave you with the words from Gertrudis Gómez de Avellanda that inspired the title of the book—“The slave let his mind fly free, and his thoughts soared higher than the clouds where lightning forms.”The Lightning Dreamer: Cuba's Greatest Abolitionist has received a number of awards: 2014 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults, School Library Journal's Top Ten Latino-themed Books for 2013, Teaching for Change 2013 Favorite, Center for the Study of Multicultural Children's Literature selection as a Best Multicultural Book of 2013, 2014 Pura Belpré Honor Book, and International Reading Association Top Chapter Book for 2013.Our free educator’s guide is available on our wordpress blog Vamos a Leer.

The novel begins in 1827. Tula’s mother, who twice made the mistake of marrying for love, is desperate to prevent her thirteen-year-old daughter from taking a similar path. Mamá’s motivations are clear-cut. A wealthy connection through Tula is the family’s only hope for propping up their shaky economic status. In 19th-century colonial Cuba, arranged marriages are the social norm, but Tula’s mother worries that a girl who buries her nose in books will not attract the right kind of husband–a rich one.Who is Tula? Margarita Engle is acclaimed for novels in verse that bring to life history’s outliers, young men and women from previous centuries who thought and acted in surprisingly modern ways, and Tula stands tall among them. She’s based on Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, a Cuban poet who championed liberty for all humans and wrote Sab, an abolitionist novel, the first of its kind in Spanish. Sab predated Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Harriet Beecher Stowe classic, by eleven years. Avellaneda’s importance as an abolitionist and feminist writer is not widely known in English-speaking America. The Lightning Dreamer corrects this oversight and imagines Avellaneda’s formative years, just as she began to discover the life-changing force of poetry.Marriageability is not the only issue that arises from Tula’s penchant for reading. She happens upon the forbidden poetry of José María Heredia, whose sharp observations awaken Tula’s passion for justice. In colonial Cuba, injustice is everywhere. Her eyes take in the plight of African slaves, biracial babies abandoned to the convent, lovers kept apart by miscegenation taboos, and girls like herself, doomed to business arrangements thinly masquerading as marriages. Tula expresses her ardor for justice through poetry, which she burns to keep her mother from discovering. When Tula refuses the marriage that her grandfather arranges, she must rise to meet a string of new challenges. The inheritance is lost and her family is condemned to relative poverty. For a while, Tula finds refuge in a storyteller’s community, where she becomes entangled in an unrequited love. She moves away from the countryside to Havana, where she supports herself through tutoring. In 1836, her brother, Manuel, warns her that their mother is cooking up another arranged match. Tula flees for Spain, expecting to find greater social and creative freedom there. The Lightning Dreamer is written in free verse and is voiced through multiple characters. Tula is the most frequent speaker. Short segments provide other characters’ point of view. A partial list includes Tula’s mother; Manuel; Caridad, the freed slave who works for the family; the nuns who offer Tula space to read and write in peace; and Sab. Each character speaks in first person. I imagine them as a series of stage players delivering brief and sometimes prejudicial monologues reflecting on Tula’s choices. This approach perfectly suits the fictionalized treatment of a young poet. The language is spare and often stunning, capturing vivid images and profound interiority.

The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history. This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I you are on the fence about purchasing this book, please go on you will not be disappointed.

Item received on 2/25/17 by mail. a Very interesting book, who tells us more detailed pieces from the American history than you ought to learn, often with several boring facts on school.Kenneth C. Davis gives a very realistic picture of what was going good and wrong during the American history, and the influence in their concerned world.Again, the right literature that fills in the gaps of what we really didn't know.

If you're like me and don't remember much from American history classes in school, this book will help! I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further. The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan. Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.

I don’t know where to begin...lolI got the book and thought..’wow it’s very thin’, but then I thought..’well you only paid $6 bucks for it.’ So ok.Then I opened it, whoa!Check out the attached photos please. This book is supposed to have a 14 day meal plan, which is the main reason why I ordered it. I figured something short and sweet to get me started. Nope, no meal plans...at least I can’t find them. There are suggestions of what to eat, but nope, no meal plans. And then, to top it all off, most of the text is written in riddles. I can’t understand it. I mean, I’ve never written a book before, but isn’t there someone to proof read before it goes to print? The best thing about this book is the beautiful, colorful cover...it looks like a real book. There may be useful bits and pieces written inside.

This is an extremely helpful book. This cookbook has such a significant number of keto formulas. I cherish the vast assortment of keto dishes! It even has an entire area on keto desserts. Most of the information of this book with very much arranged guide especially strong for working up my cooking fitness. This book furnishes me with an apprentice establishment about the keto diet. Be that as it may, it's so natural to lift appropriate back up. I've lost 10lbs and can't be more joyful on the grounds that I'm really appreciating nourishment once more. Just remember...slow and simple successes the race. Much thanks to you Leanne for completely changing me.

My 5x7 25 page book arrived today and I can’t make any sense out of it.It reads like someone was trying to translate into English.....and failed..For example: serving size: what’s left for lunch the following day.just need to every day I don’t get it! How about The complete misguide . A scam me thinks!!.Begrudgingly the star for book cover. There are no recipes in this book. I can’t imagine what book these other reviews are referring to.

There are so many delicious recipes in this cookbook that I've already starting writing a list of all the ones I can't wait to try! They're quick and cheap to make so I can easily manage a healthy diet around work and everyday life. I love that the diet doesn't solely focus on losing weight either, it also considers health and reduction of disease risk factors.

The author was informative and had a strong knowledge on Keto plan. This book provides me with a beginner foundation about the keto diet plan. The content is well structured, and you get a lot of information out of it. The recipes are simple and ingredients are available. so this book will be the best book for beginners! I love this recipes book.

Excellent book for Keto Diet Plan. 14 Keto Meal Diet Plans for Rapid Weight Loss it truly worked. I try this book recipes I give me a better result. This book step by step guide very helpful for me. My family loves this book recipe. I recommended this book.

Nothing is lined up in this 24 pg booklet. Not a single recipe. One line leads into another paragraph that makes ansolutely zero sense. Says there are graphs...there is nothing. I'd like a refund. This has to be a misprint!

Not what I expected...... only a few pages of information

It looks amazing on my coffee table!!

One of my favorite design books now... I love the way she organizes it and doesn't clutter the book with unrealistic, luxe crap no one cares about.

Love this book. A lot of good information about patterns, and textures. I've learned a lot, and incorporated it all into my home.

One of the most gorgeous home design books I own. Lots of great information, lots of exquisite images, and a simply stunning cover.

This is a great book a must for any person who loves interior design. There are great explanations of how to use color.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Although some of the styling is a little eclectic for me, I love the writing style and for the most part the decor (i.e., light walls, texture, contrast, pops of color, antiques, unusual accents). There is a section at the front that discusses how to put together color and pattern and balance them, with pictures. It starts with warm and cool neutrals, adding intensity with color and then including saturated and accent color. If you are not in the design world (and I am not), this is an informative chapter. I know I will refer back to it again and again. Our children are grown and we are slowing working through the house to freshen the decor. I am so happy to find this wonderful book! Bonus - Several do-it-yourself projects, and three pages of resources at the end.

If you like earthtones, natural fibers and ethnic prints, you will love it too. Before purchase of this book, the last thing on my mind was another decorating book, but this book was different. There is no hot pink or neon yellow. The palate is neutral featuring introduction of lovely patterns. As a bonus, she offers simple DIY projects that are simple and easy.

Some things were fun to look at, but I wasn't looking for occasional fun. Seemed a bit mundane and only a tiny bit of info that I found semi interesting. Nice book for stacking or decor though :(

The book is really thoughtful, practical, and excellently produced and written. It starts with a brief introduction to permaculture that builds on historical origins but avoids being a repeat of Mollison's visionary work. Practical Permaculture gives very clear examples, bases information on science, and modernizes concepts appropriately for 2015. The framework of the book is a step by step, well thought-out- process to designing a site using permaculture principles . "Designing a site" is one of the most important permaculture activities - the book helps you learn the important characteristics of your farm/backyard/community garden, deciding your goals, and placing elements such as plants, orchards, households, coops, ponds etc so they can reinforce each other following the dynamics of nature. It teaches the use of design tools such as sectors, zones, edges, and patterns in non-nonsense, approachable style. By following this book you'll have learned a lot and taken many of the important first steps in setting up a sustainable and enjoyable system. While many other other general permaculture books may be a repeat of Mollison's "Designer's Manual", the authors here provide genuine value and insight into the process of design, considering modern tools and options, and focusing on the actionable and pragmatic aspects of implementing a permaculture project. They also bring experience applying permaculture in colder climates and can put forth relevant species and examples of techniques to the table. The quality of the book is very high - materials, design, layout, illustrations are great.Having read many (most) of available books on the topic, and as a holder of a Permaculture Design Certificate I find myself recommending and gifting this book again and again for those who are new to Permaculture, and to those that are more aware of Permaculture generally but ask "so... how do I start"? This has been a great addition to my library - even though it ends up open on my desk most of the time. I hope the authors consider embarking on additional writing projects.

Practical Permaculture offers a wide variety of suggestions for making land more sustainable. The book lists ideas to improve just about any piece of land and at different costs. Some of them are cheap and easy, like composting, while other require more money, like building an energy efficient home. This means that there is something here useful regardless of a reader's income level . The book also offers useful tips for different climates and what plants and building techniques work well there. Most of these suggestions are light in details, but the authors list books that interested readers can go to for more in-depth coverage. There are a few things I take issue with in the book. The section on building houses includes wattle and daub and straw bale houses. I understand that these building materials are sustainable using local resources, but I have to question whether sustainability is being given more consideration than durability. People stopped using these building materials long ago and for good reasons. The authors also advocate guerrilla gardening, making changes to someone else's property without their permission. Improving a piece of wasted land is noble when it's yours, but some of the changes in this book are criminal, like cutting off a branch of someone else's tree and grafting on one that yields fruit or planting your vegetables seeds in their flowerbeds and expecting to harvest the produce. If you wouldn't want someone else messing with your land, don't expect them to like you doing it to theirs. Lastly, near the end of the book the authors basically say the readers should decide whether to follow laws they consider burdensome or just ignore them. This is dangerous territory. Nobody likes it when the rich and powerful ignore laws they don't like, so why is it good when laws are ignored by those of us with more limited means?I know that sounds like a lot to complain about, but the book is so long and many portions so useful that I feel these issues warrant only a drop of one star.

The Phenomenology is considered one of the supremely creative works of Western philosophy. After devoting many hours in trying to parse and grok the text I would say it deserves its reputation. However, I still don’t think the book is worth reading.Admittedly, Hegel was a great thinker. His elaboration of a system showing the stages of human consciousness as it grows from sense perception to a scientific worldview is highly original. But, as one begins to reflect on his account, there is no evidence, not one argument given to support his theories. There is only one assertion after another.A careful reading of the title shows exactly what Hegel intended. By phenomenology he means he will describe how consciousness appears to itself as it undergoes this ascension. In other words, there is no grounding for anything Hegel says except the personal inspection of his own mind.As is obvious, Hegel did have a perspicacious mind. Who else could unite sense perception and reason, substance and accident, potency and act into a comprehensive system illuminating what he means by the Spirit which grounds all reality? There just is no reason to think that this system is in any way connected to reality. Consistent, coherent and complex as Hegel’s system is, there is really no reason to devote many hours to understanding his philosophy unless one has a particular interest.Someone once said that what is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. Never has the phrase had greater applicability than to Hegel. A fortiori is this true of the Phenomenology of Spirit.

This book is so great, I love everything about it, the translation, the way it looks, the Ideas themselves. I am not a scholar or anything, but I sure can get lost reading this book.Note. One of my teachers did warn me that reading this book while too young can corrupt you, because Hegel's ideas seem so absolutely true and real, it becomes the "end all be all" and you might think you have solved everything because you understand the ideas. In my mind, I have this book and Sri Aurobindo's THE LIFE DIVINE tied together. If you like this book DEFINITELY DEFINITELY purchase The Life Divine.

I'm not a fan of Hegel, nevertheless it is a masterpiece philosophical writing.I really wish scholars would come together and put together an easily accessible version of this work however. The writing is extremely outdated, and that coupled with errors in translation lead to an extremely convoluted and hard to understand read. Regardless, this is a tough read.If you are using this for a class I suggest investing time in online lectures in addition to reading or you will not understand, especially if you are skipping portions. Either that, or buy a companion book which explains the arguments being presented.

Not for the faint of heart. You must have a strong desire to study German philosophy.I actually like the preface more than the book. Got about 1/3 through before putting back on the shelf. If you finish this, consider yourself VERY smart :-)

This version of the Phenomenology is definitely not worth the price. I should have spent a couple more dollars on a different version.I knew going in how large the book is, but once in your hands, it's like a very poorly bound textbook. The paper is very cheap, almost like thick consumer printer paper. The tiny margins and line spacing in the book makes it very difficult to read what is already a challenging book.To make it even worse, there are many typos throughout the book. I began reading from the preface and kept running into them, so I decided to leaf through and see if the typos are all through the book, and they are.All these things put together make reading this book terrible, which is unfortunate for the otherwise great content. I spent about an hour and a half reading it before I had to put it down. Before purchasing I would consider looking into different editions of this book, which are only a few dollars more.

Ok; let's be honest. This book is a masterpiece that just can't be understood by most readers. Ok, here's what you do. First swallow your pride; then order this $4.00 book on AmazonHistory of Philosophy (College Outline) (Paperback)by William S. Sahakian (Author)It will give you a great summary of Hegel. Then approach the book in small bites. It's a slow read, but it is a profound book that truly changed the world of thought.Hegel assumes the reader already knows the system before he or she starts the phenomenology. But most don't. so go to the above summary first. "the end is the beginning"; that's just the way it is. You must already have a grasp of Hegel's thought before even starting the phenomenology. But it is essential reading.

It took me a good 3 weeks to read/listen (audible) to this book. The book is really informative if you can follow along. There are some part that I found more obscur but its only because I was getting overwhelmed from the concentration this book require. I would also recommend that if youre having some difficulty to check Gregory Sadler 30 minutes Hegel video serie on YouTube.

A must read for anyone studying philosophy! Although the book is very complex and uses the most abstract language to describe difficult concepts, it is well worth the read and has influenced many thinkers throughout history.

Spoiler alert! This book would have been better if it were about half as long. I only made it through about 70% before I gave up. Instead I looked up Mr. LeVine's article on Quartz about the collapse of Envia. That article was a good read, but here he tried to wrap the Envia story up with the details of battery research at Argonne and make it into a fairly long book. It loses focus as it delves into needless detail on the interactions of a couple dozen major and minor players. I started to lose track of the all the postdocs and bit players who pop in and out of the story. About 20% of the book is just about the process of writing a grant proposal, which is drudgery to do and not much fun to read about. This should be a good story. There is deception and institutional disfunction, politics and backstabbing. However, the author is too coy while building up to the big reveal about Envia. For the part of the book that I read, everything Envia claimed is presented with complete credulity. Ultimately, the suspense is lost. I think a lot of people who read a book about car batteries will already know the Envia story, and the way it is presented here gives no additional insight into what happened there. As for Argonne - I think we are supposed to be rooting for them, but what comes through between the lines makes the institution seem like its own worst enemy. Mr LeVine's presentation of the material is dry and fact oriented. Maybe that's inevitable, given the subject matter: a large government laboratory. It was about as exciting as reading a book about the inner workings of the post office. Finally, there is the science aspect. I'm a physicist, but I don't know anything about battery science in particular. To me, the scientific explanations read like an author who doesn't understand the science trying to paraphrase people who do. He gets all the important details in accurately, but there was not a lot of scientific insight. This disappointed me, as I originally hoped this would be a light science book about battery technology. But again, the book was more about politics than science.

Interesting story of the history of lithium ion batteries, but not so much from a scientific standpoint, rather from a business perspective. Nice history.I felt the history provided was incomplete. Levine only spends a page or so on Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, and builder of the huge lithium battery factory in Reno, NV. A frustrating omission. Also, he did not mention at all the lithium ion battery fires in the Boeing 787's. A huge omission, in my view. This book was copy writed in Feb, 2015, so there should have been more. Also, I would have appreciated more technical detail, a bit more of the physical chemistry, or whatever, so as to understand what to me is a black box. (I had the kindle version) - I was frustrated by lack of some sort of pictoral representation of the cathode lattice microstructure the Levine spent to much time writing about.I did come to appreciate that lithium ion "battery" resembles a capacitor: they move ions from anode to cathode, without any chemical change - unlike a lead acid battery that involves actual chemical reactions. No wonder lithium ion batteries are so good at brief, large amperage discharges (like starting a car engine), but less good at deep storage capacity (like actually powering a car over about 40 miles).I also feel Levine did a good job describing why government subsidies are important for development of battery technology, and of reasons why development has gone so slowly to date.I do very much agree with the main premise of the book: battery technology is and will be very important for the future of our technical civilization. In that regard, the book is worth reading.

It is a good book, well written and thoroughly researched. It describes in great detail the efforts from 2008 to 2014 to find a viable energy storage solution for electric vehicles, mainly centered around US DOE Argonne National Lab. It focuses almost solely solely on the efforts within Argonne and Envia; and leaves out discussing countless other efforts around the world. The value of the book is in depicting the numerous forces at play within the large US government labs, the maze of subsidies and hype that supports them, and the complex licensing arrangements and public-private partnerships that became so popular during the financial crisis. It is particularly interesting for entrepreneurs sitting outside those heavily subsidized and centrally orchestrated efforts. The end of the book leaves you feeling unconvinced of the government sponsored leadership pursuing emerging technologies. It almost confirms that those efforts are better left to the markets and entrepreneurs; government intervention seems to pile up risk averse behaviours, consolidate bureaucracies and create unreliable business outcomes. The books also describes sources of compensation for employees of labs that seem excessive in light that those scientists should be regarded more as public servants than bona-fide entrepreneurs, no matter how much their efforts are incentivized through royalty sharing agreements. A good well written book.
