Robert Whitlow is one of my favorite authors. In fact, he is also one of my husband’s favorites and one of my book club’s favorites. We are all very excited when a new novel is released. So it was with the great anticipation of a good read that I opened the cover of Chosen People. Oh, my goodness! Chosen People moves up to the top of the list for best book by Whitlow. This book has it all! It gets a highly recommended rating from me.Chosen People is legal drama at its best — an intriguing case, determined attorneys seeking justice, and clients that deserve the best of outcomes. Add to this a timely backdrop of international terrorism, a mix of cultures and beliefs, and the setting of Israel, and you get a book that is sure to please the most discerning of readers. Whitlow has succeeded in bringing to life the vibrant world of modern Israel from the perspectives of Israeli Jew and Arab, and those who visit from other parts of the world. The lawsuit that main characters Hana, Jakob, and Daud pursue is a complex mix of American anti-terrorism laws, financial investigations, and dark underworld connections. It kept this reader engaged throughout. The early parts of the book deal heavily with the case, but it soon becomes apparent that there is danger for all who are connected to the case. And while I loved the intricacies of the law, the characters were the real star. I had several favorites, but it is Hana Abboud, an Israeli Arab Christian working as a lawyer in Atlanta, that captured my imagination. She is obviously skilled in her work, but her faith is real and alive and was inspiring on many levels. She cares for all people regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Hana indeed is a woman who lives out her faith in tangible ways. She describes it to her co-counsel in this way: . . . my relationship with God through Jesus is my core. I know that’s a religious statement, but it’s not just a belief or an idea; it transforms everything about who I am and how I relate to all people, regardless of who they are and where they come from.” (p.354). What a great statement! There are many powerful, faith-filled moments in this book that add a depth to an already excellent legal suspense novel.My book club will be reading Chosen People in the coming months. I cannot wait to hear where our discussion will take us. I have read and enjoyed several of the author's previous books and was attracted to this book because of the story line. It seemed interesting in today's political climate. Christian novels tend to fall into one of two categories. The first is the novel as a "Sermon disguised as a book". The author has a spiritual message they want to convey and they come up with some half way reasonable (or not) plot to use as a context for the 'real' message. They usually aren't too hard to spot. The second category is to try and write a strong story with realistic moments of faith and spirituality woven into but not dominating the story. This particular story seemed to have a hard time determining what it wanted to be. Some of the 'sermonizing' seemed forced and did not help the overall story. For example, how many times do you need to mention the characters praying before a meal? Some parts of the story didn't seem to flow well because you had to get the characters into the right locations to hear the message they were supposed to hear. Maybe it's because when I pick up a novel I'm looking for a compelling story about the main subject with realistic and appropriate 'side stories' that this one just didn't quite do it for me. The story was good but and at times held my interest but not great and the faith part seemed forced much of the time. Three stars all the way.

Robert Whitlow is a favorite author of mine. He lives in North Carolina, and attended the UGA Law School. He writes stories about people living in the South. Well, I also live in the South. South Georgia, in fact, with UGA history and years of vacationing in North Carolina. So, yes, I am partial. I have enjoyed each book Whitlow has written.Now, jump to his new novel, Chosen People. Robert Whitlow has written his finest novel yet!!! It is outstanding on many levels. One, he has matured as a writer and story teller. Two, he has written a complicated plot. Three, he has written a novel that has taught me many tidbits concerning Israel, Arabs, and the Middle East. He has done so with a continuing Christian message, which is not sappy or overstated.Do yourself a favor, buy Chosen People. Do, what I did, and mark the pages that teach you something you did not know about this area of the world, so you can refer to it long after you have finished this novel. You'll be glad you did.

CHOSEN PEOPLE by WhitlowThis book of FULL of plots and mini-plots all introduced as interesting side-stories but none showing a really good reason to be melded into the primary story line. Once I figured that out, I quickly ‘read’ each entire subplot by ‘thumbing through’ the book to isolate/read the chapters related to a that particular subplot. Because the subplots were so unrelated, I found that this approach did not interfere with reading the main plot at all. What it did do was keep the mini-plots from acting as a constant distraction in reading/enjoying the intriguing primary story line presented by the author.

Robert Whitlow is one of my favorite novelists, for both his writing skill and his obvious research into his topics. And, of course, he is a lawyer, which adds depth to the legal aspects of his tales. Owning and having read half a dozen, or more, of his books, I have to rate this as one of his very best, with foreshadowing that just isn't well taught, to everyone who wants to publish books. One character in Chosen People, in particular, seemed utterly genuine, but I could not dismiss entirely just the hint of suspicion that he would prove false. To say more about that would require a spoiler alert, so I will not continue. If you want a novel that is miles above the average book, these days, please read Chosen People.I bought my copy of Chosen People for my Kindle. Had I bought a print copy, I might have torn pages out in my quest to reach the end!

Light easy reading, but a bit superficial. Doesn't quite hit the sweet spot between too light and too much info. Too many arguments boiled down to "c'mon, really?" Still, fun to re-visit the creative conspiracy theories.

I bought this when i used to read roeper every day (i find his columns lacking ever since he decided to take on 3+ jobs at once) and it is his writing at its best. so many great arguments, makes you wonder about people sometimes

This book is more witty than analytical, but its a good, quick read that points out that just about every conspiracy theory is riddled with problems and errors. If you want a more analytical look at the place of conspiracy theories in contemporary American Life, I suggest Jonathan Kay's Among the Truthers.

Absolutely delightful book! Sorry it ended. His opinions, wording, use of imagery, stories - all made the reading witty and well done!

This was a fun informative read. It makes you shake your head to think that so many people buy into the strangest theories about how something happened rather than going to the most practical and common place. I guess people don't want simple and common place. My only complaint about the book was that some of the theories got a lot of explanation...almost too much. I was surprised to find several urban legends and conspiracy theories that I had never heard of. I guess those believers would say I had my head in the sand. Recommended.

Roeper had me hooked from his FOXNEWS interview about his book - though in the book he makes his distaste for FOXNEWS apparent.However I really was hoping for more - more on the JFK assassination hype, more on Roswell "cover-up," and other moronic conspiracy theories.His film reviews should also cover the "Parallax View" which is another far-fetched "evil government cover-up conspiracy" flick which is even worse than "Capricorn I" if that were possible.His point about the "9/11 truth"-squaders is well-taken - if there had been any conspiracy the same ruthless government would have had all of these morons buried in a mass grave under a toxic nuclear waste dump! ! !

I just got the book today, great read, I like the chapter on the war on christmas, keep up the good work.

I only read a little of this book, but it was enough to prove it was a waste of paper. All Roeper does is take a list of topics of widely-varying importance, from the 9/11 attacks to Katrina to the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich, and supposedly says what really happened.But all he does is make a shallow cover of each topic, using rushed and poorly-argued and unsourced "evidence". He talks about various rumors that came out of what happened during Hurricane Katrina, but simply says they are based on racism because many victims were black, and he fails to say what really happened. He also claims the media isn't liberally-biased by listing a few conservative news outlets and columnists-but fails to give an overall picture of the media.Essentially Roeper editorializes rather than educates, and could at least have provided some sources for his arguments rather than saying "this is so!" with no real evidence. The National Enquirer does a better job.

Got this as a Christmas gift for a friend that likes to cook. He is currently dabbling with Thai cuisine and I thought this would be helpful with easy recipes. Can't wait to be invited for a meal. I got fired up browsing through it and bought one for myself. Excited to give these a try.

This cookbook delivers exactly what it promises, excellent Thai takeout recipes. The layout is very user friendly and the photography is well done!

A very compact, nicely explained recipe book explaining Thai cooking --- from what utensils you need, equipment, supplies, recipes for basic sauces and had really lovely pictures of the items cooked!

Simple,good but seems incomplete

We love Thai take out food but the best Thai restaurant is 12 miles away. This cookbook makes it easy to make what we love. The only thing I would suggest is a photo of every dish. Photos would give a visual to compare our creations against.

It is the one book that can help every gathering of brothers and sisters around this globe see how the Bible is to be read and understood. Too often people, Christian or otherwise will take the Bible and read it like any other book without understanding the unique way God meant for it to be read. Leonard and Frank remind us "that all the Scriptures are held together by a single narrative: the story of Jesus Christ."What Leonard and Frank do is none other than what Jesus said to the Jewish leaders: "You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you possess eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life" (John 5:39-40, TNIV). And later to His disciples in Luke: "He said to them, `This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.' Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures." (Luke 24:44-45, TNIV).Throughout church history brothers and sisters have often divided themselves over various interpretations of the Bible, because of using a wrong hermeneutic. Thankfully there have always been remnants of God's people who "got it" throughout church history. Today is another one of those days in church history. Now in this unique book all of God's people can see the unique way the Bible was meant to be read, not just a few. Leonard and Frank want believers to see that "the Bible contains its own hermeneutic" by which we understand the Scriptures: "Jesus Himself was the common source...Jesus is the interpretative key of the Bible...everything in the Bible points to Jesus - either His person, His work, or His character...He is the Canon within the canon."As Leonard and Frank say: "In a word, Jesus is the thread that holds all Scripture together. He is the prism that breaks forth its multifaceted colors. He is the lens that puts all of it into focus, the switch that sheds light on its dimly lit quarters, and the key that unlocks its meaning and richness."The authors also help inform the brothers and sisters when reading the Bible that history and composition matter. "The Bible didn't emerge out of a vacuum. It is historical but also metaphorical and narrative story of truth written within history." They state that "biblical logic defies logic. The Bible was written in a circle" because they were written at a time when the spoken word was written in what is called "ring composition." The connections in the Bible are done "not sequentially but synoptically" because it is a "story-circle" not a "story-line." As such reading the Bible must take into consideration the literary constructions of "(1) parallelism, (2) chiasmus, and (3) latch" which the authors describe in the book and as they relate it to reading the Bible in their many examples throughout the chapters of "Jesus: A Theography." Too often the Bible is read like a novel, quickly, focusing on key parts, and then once done put it on the shelf. Or it is read like a `self-help' book and we read only those parts we can `apply' to make our lives `better.' Because the Bible was written in "ring composition" it "forces one to slow down and pay attention to the details while never losing sight of the whole."It has been said by many that the "Introduction: The Jesus Story" from Leonard and Frank's book is worth the price of the book. I would heartily agree! In fact this review is a review of the introduction because of this one section's importance. In the rest of the book the authors pick up the Bible with the reader and together peer into Christ as they look afresh into the First and Second Testaments, the terms the authors use for the Old and New Testament. The rest of "Jesus: A Theography" applies what they speak of in their Introduction to help the brothers and sisters "discover that the entire story of Israel in the First Testament repeats itself in the life of Christ in the Second Testament. And it does so in almost every detail. In this regard, Jesus not only fulfills the First Testament narrative but also reenacts, relives, and replays it." In the end the authors make an astute comment: "Don't try to figure everything out or get everything right. Just let the story unfold. Let the Bible tell its own story to you. Trust the Jesus story as it moves from Genesis to Revelation. And see if the Holy Spirit doesn't open your eyes to see the greatness of Christ anew and afresh."There have been many complicated theories and opinions put forth about many sundry things in the Bible, things that get the focus instead of Christ Jesus our Lord. I would encourage you to get a copy of this excellent book and see how Christ comes afresh from the pages of the Bible. Then as you read the Bible for yourself, see, as the authors tell us, that all the words of the Bible should be in "red" letters. May the Father by His Spirit open our eyes to Christ in the Bible! And let us not stop their, because it is only the beginning, "the elementary truth's of God's word... the elementary teachings about Christ" (Hebrews 5:12, 6:1, TNIV) because in truth the Scriptures teach us that God wants us to know the Christ, in Reality in one another!May the prayer of Paul given to the brothers and sisters in Ephesus be our reality: "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe...I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." (Ephesians 1:17-19a, 3:16-19, TNIV).

This book has taken some time for me to read. Not only is it rich in theology but it’s saturated in the overarching story of the Bible; all Scripture points to Christ.Although I knew this, I got to see the in depth view of what it looks like for all of Scripture to point to Christ. I will continue to circle back, study and reference this book.My understanding of Christ, myself and Scripture has been enlightened and I’m thankful to have taken time to work and pray through this book!

This is an excellent book bringing historical Jesus research together with theology (biography + theology = theography). As I read through the book, I felt as though a word picture of Jesus was being built through its pages. Jesus: A Theography chronicles the story of Jesus from before creation through His future return to Earth, using both old and new testaments to point toward Christ. There were many new insights to me in this book that caused me to stop and ponder a new aspect of Christ and the Christian faith. The book contains tons of research compiled in extensive end notes. I enjoyed reading some of the additional information in the end notes as much as the main text, but I enjoy reading about Jewish/Christian history. Following is a quote from near the end of the book:"This brings us back to the original thesis of this book. The Bible is the narrative of Jesus - the Christ, the Savior, the living Lord, and our All. On every page of the First [Old] Testament, God poured out His heart. He bled with His people long and hard before He entered earth through the womb of a young virgin girl in Bethlehem. In the ocean of words that many call 'the Hebrew Bible,' God revealed His character to us. He dispassionately enumerated His heart's desire - and with fiery passion, He laid out His plan. The cry of God through Jesus bled through every page from Genesis to Malachi. And in Matthew, YHWH took on human flesh and broke into planet Earth. The living Word of God clothed Himself with mortality and became one of us. And in so doing, He fulfilled every promise. Jesus, therefore, is God's best and final word."

This was not an easy read but I thoroughly appreciated the insights and the way the authors unwrapped the complexity of the premise of the book. I especially appreciated the last section of the book which was a collection of quotes by writers and theologians through the centuries establishing the same premise.

One of my FAVORITE books!!!! Reading these chapters has uncovered aspects of Jesus, the culture of the times, and modern application in aways I have never experienced before. I have read this along with the Gospels and spent time not praying but LISTENING to Jesus... I started to hear HIM speak!!! Worth the time and money! -Anastasia

My 8 year old daughter loves these books. They are a quick and easy read for her!

A great book for children to read. I think that a great book like this is an awesome book to lift your spirits on a sad day. Or a great book to read around a campfire. Or anywhere. I think this book mainly is about a girl who has a very loving family and has a strange magical peculiar tree in her yard. (Review by our 8-year old reader)

We love the Piper Green books! Good story line and illustrations.

My niece loves this series. And this book, was very much like the first two. So if you like the first two, then you wont go wrong with this.
