Very very nice book!

This is a beautiful book. From what I have read so far, it is very clearly written (undoubtedly the product of years of rewritings and revisions), connecting topics that are very connected but normally never included in one book on Lie groups (including symmetric functions, tableaux and many other topics from algebraic combinatorics). I plan to write a more detailed review once I have finished reading it, but at 600 pages (of densely packed but very well organized information) and less than US$50.00, it is very highly recommended as a textbook and as a reference.PS If this book were published by Kluwer, they would probably be charging US$500.00

Tried multiple QFT books but kept on coming back to Maggiore's book.Maggiore exposes the reader only to the important topics and succeeds in explaining most them in 265 pages; in comparison, Sredniki's Quantum Field Theory is > 600 pages while Peskin & Schroeders' An Introduction To Quantum Field Theory (Frontiers in Physics) is > 800 pages!Maggiore's style is terse, so expect making progress one paragraph at a time. The good news is that rereading helps. Again this is unlike the above mentioned two classics where you can reread some sections all you want and still would not make progress.If you want to start with an easier introduction, try Robinson's Symmetry and the Standard Model: Mathematics and Particle Physics or even Griffith's Introduction to Elementary Particles. So Griffiths --> Robinson --> Maggiore would be a reasonable sequence of books to read.Five star is compared to other QFT books and does not imply this book is perfect. The binding comes out after some use, I found chapter 1 to be unnecessary, wish some topics were explained in more detail and wanted the Standard Model to be discussed at the end.

The other reviewer is right that the kindle edition is well put together. No tiny equations or rampant misprints, though there are some typos. Maggiore is an excellent educator and knows how to explain things. The book is on the short side at under 300 pages and it felt a little like a crash course in representation theory at the beginning. I feel however that I received a very solid foundation to the subject from this book and am glad I started with Maggiore. On a side note, the review by Joao Caetano Oliveira Carvalho bothers me in that the picture they provide is not of this book, it’s Landau and Livshitz V2! I also think it’s distasteful to review the shipping as opposed to the book itself but that’s secondary. I reported it but could not explain why it’s “abuse” or “inappropriate” and Amazon might not catch the issue as a result. I hope they do.

This book is the quickest way to learn a lot of qft at a deep level. If you are an advanced undergraduate (taken all the required undergrad courses and have sufficient math background) that is wanting to learn QFT, this is the best resource. If you tried reading peskin, but couldn't get past the first few pages of chapter 2, check this book out. I found it a pleasure to read, and all the concepts were explained in a way that I found to be the most comprehensible. Additionally it has solutions to all the problems in the book. I suppose the only downside of this book is that there is not a lot of material which is both a strength and a weakness. Because the book is so small it's less intimidating, but at the same time a lot of advanced material is left out(e.g. anomalies and ghost fields). For a grad course the book could be covered in a semester. I highly recommend this book to start off learning qft.

I agree with all the previous 5 star reviews, this is a great book as an intro to QFT.Just wanted to let everyone know it reads well on a Kindle, PC or iPad Air. The equations are very readable, as is the text.

if the reader has basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and introductory special theory of relativity, then this an excellent introduction to QFT without going into a deeper level.

With this excellent book the path that a cultivated layman should follow to fulfill his noble attempt to familiarize himself with QFT is firmly traced. He (or of course She) should first read David Griffiths' book, "Introduction to Elementary Particles" to acquire a general idea of what QFT is all about. Having done so, in a Landau scale 1 to 10, he will now be at level 9. He should then read Maggiore's book aiming for an incomparably deeper understanding of the field that will catapult him to level 5 (keep in mind that Landau placed himself at level three!). About Maggiore's book: The author in chapter two, about Lie, Lorentz, Poincaré groups, and representations, warns the reader that its understanding will not be a picnic.It is however apparent that the author has done the best (as also in the sections concerning Noether's theorem, Spinor fields and Dirac Equation, Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann -reduction formula, Path Integral Quantization....) to clarify difficult issues. At the aimed level of the book I think that it was a good idea to limit the discussions to the low energy approximation of the electroweak theory, and to expound only the two main ingredients of the Standard Model, namely Yang-Mills theories and the Higgs mechanism.The best introductory book on the field in my opinion.

Clear and concise

Great book that cuts out a lot of the tediousness of QFT in other books and focuses on the mathematical structure of QFT. The hundred pages of QED scattering calculations in P&S is limited to a few pages with only quoted results in this book. Perhaps not ideal for a phenomenologist or experimentalist, but quite satisfying as a theorist.My one gripe with the book is that the fields are not wave functions. He continuously refers to phi, psi and A as "wave functions" throughout the entire book. This is completely wrong. They are just fields. QFT has a wave function even if it's never used. for a state |a> is just as much a wave function in QFT as it is in QM. QFT changes nothing about that. Calling phi, psi and A wave functions just contributes to the confusion most students have as separating those two ideas is hard enough as it is for rookies to QFT.

I can't think of other examples right now, but I know I usually was disappointed when I did try to look up a phrase.Also, I've taken one semester of Japanese, and it was actually difficult to read the Japanese phrases because this phrase book doesn't use the normal romanization. I can see pros and cons to this, because if one didn't know anything about the Japanese language, perhaps the way they romanize the phrases could help. However, just keep in mind that if you do know some Japanese, this could be a little confusing at first.My friend who was traveling with me had the Lonely Planet phrasebook, and I was very jealous. I like how the Lonely Planet phrasebook gives you more phrases (more than you would probably ever need), and it also provides basic grammar lessons, so that the sentences make some sense (and you're not just trying to memorize phrases).Anyways, for my next trip to Japan, I'm going back to Lonely Planet.

It's a great compact phrasebook, with so many phrases that comes in handy. It's organized by subject (like subway travel, business, shopping, eating, etc). It also has sections of the kanji and signs you will see in each situation (which was actually useful when we were looking for the right subway to take). Even in Tokyo, some of the subway lines we had to take was "limited express" vs "express" as indicated on Gmaps, but the subways only had those written in kanji! x__X So before I learned the kanji for each, my friend and I were just hopping on any that came first and ended up taking the "express" subway that took way more stops than we needed...Unfortunately, there is no hiragana reading for any of the phrases in the book, only the reading in English. For example "Can you recommend another hotel?" is "Hoka ni i hoteru ari-mass ka?" but no ”ほかに　いい　ホテル　が　ありますか？” This phrasebook is definitely not meant to teach Japanese, but only used to travel with ease.But it's still a great book! With sections of "What You Will Hear" for each subject. There is also a pronunciation guide, cross-cultural notes, the calendar, numbers, time, useful everyday phrases , etc at the beginning of the book, and a great index of words at the back! The index was very handy for me!!!And even though there is plenty of English speakers, signs and menus in Tokyo, Kyoto ( all the bigger touristy cities), eating in Yokohama proved difficult at this famous curry place. No one spoke English, there was no English menu, and I hadn't brushed up on my Japanese yet so it was struggle city. Fortunately I'm sure all of the things on the menu were going to be delicious, and I had no food allergies. I understood "scallop" on one of the curry names so I picked that LOL. Turns out I needed some phrases in the book like "What's your most popular item?" so I can pick and move on.

I don't speak any Japanese, but I took a trip to Japan to visit some family and to see the Cherry Blossoms. This book came in pretty handy and it fits in your pocket, making it easy to carry around.PROS:- Lots of small phrases, common words and an index. There are apps that can probably translate as well, but I don't have a smart phone.- Organized by situation, making it easy to find what you need. I especially liked the food part because it's nice to know what you're eating.CONS:- I think some of the phrases are wrong. I know I don't speak it like a native, but even so, I just got blank stares sometimes when I said their translation for "I don't speak Japanese". My aunt said it didn't make sense the way it was written either. When I got home, I typed that into Google Translate and got a different way to say it. This is why I only gave it 3 stars. It was helpful, but seriously, if there is ONE phrase you need in Japan when you don't speak Japanese, it is "I don't speak Japanese" and they got it wrong.

This little guy will be easy to tote around & is well organized for easy use. Easy is what you want in a phrase book.There is one HUGE issue I have with every single phrase book: they all use perfect binding! Ease of use is key here and a simple lay-flat spiral binding makes life for the traveler so much easier. Perfect-bound books (standard paperback style) do not stay open, unless you make them & that's often very inconvenient/impossible. Wise up, publishers!I have an old Berlitz Italian phrase book that uses plastic spiral binding and it's great. So here's the deal: if you can't find a spiral bound book to take along, I recommend this one. But if you're lucky enough to stumble on an older, wiser model? Snap that baby up!

Rather small but definitely handy. Perfect size to carry with you. The only thing that throws me off a bit is the romaji, as it is spelled out how you would sound it out rather than how it would be spelled. Overall a great good little phrase book with good and valuable information.

I am traveling to Montreal soon and I have no idea about French. I ordered this book to have some help on me while I travel. I loved the size first, it is small,so you can fit it in your purse or your pocket. The book itself is great. It shows pronunciation of everyday things that you can need as you travel and easy everyday sentences also. I would recommend this book to any beginner who wants to learn about the French language in a fast and easy way.

I have just finished reading Sarah's 101 Travel Bits: The Alaska Highway, and enjoyed it to bits! I did buy the electronic version to be able to use the very, functional links Sarah used in her book. We've got the technology, might as well use it!The best thing about her book, aside from her humor, is the fact you can read a small part at a time (a bit) and do this as you actually drive up the highway! How cool is that? She has also done her research in many ways. Not only has she found many interesting places to go, that aren't on any map, she also writes about the history of who and how this highway was built. Some of that history is quite interesting. If you have any plans to drive this highway, even a little bit of it, you must get her book!She has written other Bit Books that I will be reading soon.No, I was not given anything free for this review ;-)

I love, love, love this collection! It's got most of the songs you'd want from John Williams and they're a lot of fun to play. The only downside to such a large collection is keeping the book open. Unless you've got one of those Music Book Clip or Page Holder, even heavy books sometimes have a hard time keeping certain songs open? The solution for me? I took it to a print shop and had them trim off the edge and spiral-bind it. I don't know why Hal Leonard doesn't offer spiral editions for these larger books anyway.If you're a John Williams fan, even with the thickness of the book, this is a MUST for you.

This has an incredible amount of songs - all but one I would ever want to play. My only disappointment was that it doesn't have the "Jurassic Park" theme (I'm talking about the end-credits fanfare). I also agree with other customers that the binding doesn't facilitate easy playing. But I never realized before just how incredibly complex, yet stunningly simple John Williams' music is. I've fallen even more deeply in love with his music as I (try to) play it!

I like the selection of music in the book. However, I had an error in printing. 20 of the pages are upside-down and in the opposite order. I am not sure how this happened. I didn't realize it until I had the book for a month. It is disappointing that I have to flip the book upside down and turn 20 pages forward to complete a few songs.

FYI - I'm a moderate player, can play some of these pieces with some practice, they sound great. The pieces are wonderful. Just FYI, this is for advanced players or those willing to PRACTICE.

Fantastic selection of Williams' movie greats. The arrangements are a little challenging to me as an intermediate level pianist, but with work I am getting them - and they are helping to pull my skill up in the process. I highly recommend to anyone at intermediate level or above.

I am doing a study of the music of a John Williams. A great way to have his music at my fingertips!

I wish it was spiral bound. But music is delightful

All the favorites, my son loves the book. Good challenge for level 4.
