On March 20, 1995, followers of the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo unleashed lethal sarin gas into cars of the Tokyo subway system. Many died, many more were injured. This is acclaimed Japanese novelist Murakami's (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, etc.) nonfiction account of this episode. It is riveting. What he mostly does here, however, is listen to and record, in separate sections, the words of both victims, people who "just happened to be gassed on the way to work," and attackers. The victims are ordinary people bankers, businessmen, office workers, subway workers who reflect upon what happened to them, how they reacted at the time and how they have lived since. Some continue to suffer great physical disabilities, nearly all still suffer great psychic trauma. There is a Rashomon-like quality to some of the tales, as victims recount the same episodes in slightly different variations. Cumulatively, their tales fascinate, as small details weave together to create a complex narrative. The attackers are of less interest, for what they say is often similar, and most remain, or at least do not regret having been, members of Aum. As with the work of Studs Terkel, which Murakami acknowledges is a model for this present work, the author's voice, outside of a few prefatory comments, is seldom heard. He offers no grand explanation, no existential answer to what happened, and the book is better for it. This is, then, a compelling tale of how capriciously and easily tragedy can destroy the ordinary, and how we try to make sense of it all. Through interviews with several dozen survivors and former members of Aum, novelist Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) presents an utterly compelling work of reportage that lays bare the soul of contemporary Japan in all its contradictions. The sarin attack exposed Tokyo authorities' total lack of preparation to cope with such fiendish urban terrorism. More interesting, however, is the variety of reactions among the survivors, a cross-section of Japanese citizens. Their individual voices remind us of the great diversity within what is too often viewed from afar as a homogeneous society. What binds most of them is their curious lack of anger at Aum. I read this because I love Murakami. I had never heard of the Tokyo gas attacks, and now am frankly pretty surprised it had never come up in the US.Anyhow, Murakami mostly stays out of his subjects' ways in the first portion of the book. He lets survivors speak for themselves and neither he nor the translator make many intrusions, unless it's to clarify some detail (usually the translator notes are for people like me who don't have any background knowledge about the attacks).It's really interesting to see how people viewed the same situation differently--there are several times when one survivor will describe a person that later tells their own story of the event, and both are pretty different. Despite this being a really cool perspective, it can get a tiny bit repetitive, but it's worth it to stick it out and finish the book.The last section of the book is Murakami's reflections on what the gas attacks meant in the broader context of Japanese society and interviews with ex and current Aum members. During this, he waxes philosophical about his own complex relationship with his home country.As a western fan who has never visited Japan I found this fascinating. It's easy to pick up on themes feeling isolated or like something is wrong in your society (or the way you relate to it) in his other books, but it was very interesting to see him speak directly about these thoughts.He's more intrustive in the Aum section, which I actually appreciate--his anger at the naive beleifs that led to so many deaths is palpable, and most of his interviewees don't shrink back from it.Overall, a really good read if you're interested in Japan, terrorism, cults or just Haruki Murakami.

The novel starts off a bit slow as it focuses on the those personally affected by the crime. It picks up steam as he delves into the cult members. Most are extremely odd and delusional, which is to be expected. Murakami allows them to open up and express their strange and twisted perspectives......which does make for an interesting read. I really enjoyed this nonfiction effort from my new favorite author. Another example where "Truth can be be stranger then fiction"

Quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. I feel haunted by it - by both the stories of the survivors of the Tokyo subway attack, and by the interviews with the Aum members. And Murakami's own thoughts were brilliant and thought-provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone, even if you're not interested in the subject - it was honestly THAT good.

The Nobel Prize in Literature should be in the future for Huraki Murakami; it is past-due. Frankly, I had no particular interest in further exploring the underground sarin attack in Japan until I saw the author's name. I buy and read any book that he has written. Each one brings some new intriguing, creative and challenging plot. Often they are so complex that a second or even a third reading is rewarding - such as Kafka on the Shore and The Wild Sheep Chase. In this book Murakami becomes a journalist who engages the reader immediately in the event he is about to explore. Each interview is but a seed for a full-grown plot and the final section, which is straight narrative from the author is the most interesting of all. He has a brilliant mind which is always seeking the "meaning" of an event even when it is elusive as this one.

Murakami writes damn cool novels. He has earned entirely different respect from me as a damn fine (strikingly pragmatic) cross examiner/interviewerThe text can be broken into three distinct sections.interviews with perpsinterviews with victimsinterviews with non-combat cult members in wake of attacksat several times I was worried that Murakami's rhetoric was leading to "blame the system, not the perp" but this was clearly not the case. He only allotted as much blame as sanely due, given that the Tokyo municipality clearly provided absolutely zero logistic coordination, and people allotted to much blame to the cult rather than structures/bodies like the cult.I am damn glad the attackers were as incompetent in brewing the sarin as they were, my solid sympathies to those effected.

I would hope that whoever sits down with individuals and families has it within them to do the right thing and provide financial services for their customer's needs and not just to create personal revenue from a transaction. I was part of a financial seminar given for financial advisers in which Mr. West was a speaker. He indeed embodies the content of this book and I'm sure would have been wildly successful in any avenue of sales or whatever he pursued.

Not worth reading, at least by a doctor. Went to Goodwill.

This book touches on experiences many of us in the medical profession either personally went through or know someone who went through them but were never properly addressed.

good book

When this book was on my Vine list, it had not yet been published, so all I had to go on was the two paragraph description which mentioned several American television shows as proof of our fascination with doctors. My late father was also a doctor, so I was curious to see what this book had to say versus what happened in my own home.So I was rather dismayed, and feeling a bit mislead, when it turned out to to be a book almost exclusively about the training of doctors in the UK. There were some comparisons to the US, mostly on how primary care was emphasized more in the UK than in the US as a specialty and how doctors in the UK were encouraged to seek therapy when needed which is almost verboten in the US.The book concentrates on three distinct levels - medical school, residency and going into practice. These were interesting but difficult to relate to as it is so different for the US medical system. Doctors in the UK have the NHS so for the most part they do not have an insurance company telling them how to practice medicine. My doctor friends here universally state that the biggest reason for displease in their profession to the sense of being hogtied to the whims of an insurance provider who may or may not have any medical training.I have two doctor friends, a psychiatrist and a primary care doctor who would like to read this book. After they do, I will amend this review to give their insights.

Dr. Elton is a vocational psychologist who works with doctors. This has put her in place to have firsthand experience with the mental problems they have. She also obviously does a lot of research on it; she cites studies and statistics fluently.Doctors have pretty much the hardest training of any occupation. It’s not just the book learning that’s hard; it’s also the long hours, and the helpless feeling when tossed into the hospital and they are suddenly responsible for patients. Everyone knows a doctor or two with a big ego, but there are probably just as many who constantly fear they will not be good enough. As in any profession, they face racism and sexism. There is never time for family or even sleep. They sometimes have patients die. It’s not easy. The book is heavy on the subject of new doctors entering training; I assume this must be the time of the most stress since it’s emphasized. It’s mostly on the NHS system, although she does give some time to the American system.The book was interesting, but not quite as interesting as I’d hoped. I think I was hoping for more case studies; the book was too heavy on the statistics for me (although I do realize a book like this *had* to have statistics). The chapters seemed to be arbitrarily divided and just sort of blended into each other. Three stars.

At least I didn't. This book is written by a Psychologist, Dr. Catherine Elton, who specializes in physicians having mental health issues. She talks about things that I had thought about, like how a physician deals with having to tell a family that their baby had died to things that never occurred to me, like doctors feeling trapped because they feel they chose the wrong specialty and the ramifications of that decision. She compares how doctors in Britain, Australia and New Zealand (and their associated governments and medical societies) or the US deal with mental health issues in physicians and the differences between those places. For example, in the US, a doctor's choce of specialty is strongly influenced by how much debt they expect to carry when they are finished with their education. In other countries it is not a serious consideration, although Britain tripled the fees a physician must pay to be trained and the financial considerations are beginning to loom larger in a doctor's choice of specialty.Dr. Elton also treats medical students and residents as they wind their way through the system, trying to learn while working often superhuman hours and having to function as free labor for the doctors who are supposed to be training them. Not all doctors have to work 80+ hours a week (the limit in the US, although it is widely ignored in hospitals. The other countries largely limit doctors in training to about 40-ish hours a week. It is also ignored, but to a lesser degree), trying to learn while haivng to make some of the most difficult decisions in their lives. How trained medical personnel have learned to dread July (or August in the UK), because the doctor treating you may have graduated from med school a few weeks before and you might be the time your doctor makes life-changing decisions without someone to help them. Some Interns are tasked with telling familty members that their child has died, simply because they are the lowest member of the food chain and the more experienced doctors don't want to have to do it. (Nice, huh?Doctors aren't the only ones feeling stress. Dr. Elton has had to talk many young medical students off the ledge of a building, so to speak. Many smart young people are pressured into becoming doctors because of cultural expectations or to fulfill parental dreams. After all, if your kid is very smart, it's a lot more prestigious to speak about "your child the doctor" instead of "your child the web site programmer," even though the pay scales are comparable.Because of these expectiations, and because young people are expected to make career choices that effect their entire lives before the ink on their high school diplomas is dry. Making changes to a specialty can spell financial rin and career suicide, even though a student probably hasn't heard of all the specialties and subspecialties out there, is not an excuse. Neither is the fact that the person making the decision is too young to buy a beer in the US, on the grounds that kids cannot make such important decisions at that age. It's no surprise that despite the fact that seeking mental health care is considered a sign of weakness in the medical communion, a lot of young people attempt or succeed at suicide at rates far higher than that of the general population.The book is a fascinating look behind the sheet that serves as a wall in most hospital rooms, and will help you cut your own doctor a break when she says that she's exhausted after having to work the previous weekend to cover for a doctor who couldn't be there. (Perhaps because she gave birth to her own child the previous day, and the "tough guy" attitude shown by many medical staffers keeps junior physicians from asking for time off, no matter what the reason might be.The book is pretty small, and a real page turner, although I took a few breaks to think about what Dr. Elton was communicating. I'd love to see this as required reading before the July 1 date when a medical student becmes a doctor, or before a college student applies to med school. It sounds that as bad as it is to be a patient, it's even worse to be a doctor.

Easy recipes, that never seem to fail.

I have a whole shelf of recipe books for Passover, and A Taste of Pesach is the one I keep reaching for again and again. The recipes look fancy but are actually simple to make. Directions are clear and easy. Pictures are beautiful and realistic. And the editors must have tested these recipes thoroughly because I have never had a recipe turn out badly, or had to make a major correction on measurements or flavor. Fantastic recipe book, along with A Taste of Pesach 1.

Not as good as the first . Unless u like to focus presentation and don’t mind a patchke. A lot of recipes use crepes, which are too annoying for me to make. I prefer easier and more basic recipes

Wouldn't it be great if someone collected the section properties of all the standard steel shapes into a single handy reference?Oh wait.I'm more of a machine designer than a structures guy and to be honest I do find this book kind of clunky to use. But I certainly don't regret buying it. (Used, we don't have to comply with the codes it references.)

I was required to buy this book for a steel design course, and was annoyed at first with how expensive and bulky this book was, since I assumed we would only be using it for the tables. Once I knew how to use the book, though, I grew quite fond of it. Not only are the tables clearly marked, but the Manual and the commentary in the back were better than our textbook at explaining which equations to use and how to apply them. We now call this book our "Bible" because it has helped and guided us through our steel courses, lol. It was the best money I ever spent on a textbook, and I'm not even considering ever giving the "Bible" up.** EDIT 08/24/2013 **Since my last review, I've graduated college and started working. This is the only college "textbook" that has crossed international borders with me where I still use it for quick reference. And after 2 years of getting tossed around in a backpack, and then getting squashed in luggage, it's held up pretty well.

Useful for my carrier

Keep in mind that there is a 14th edition now. However, this manual is still an excellent reference for practicing engineers. I got it some time ago. It contains both LRFD and ASD design guidelines; I use the ASD once and a while to check work from other engineers. However, the book is intended for LRFD mainly, and the charts are great.

The book was in excellent condition, so very pleased about that. In this condition, I was hoping the steel member selection CD would have been included, but unfortunately not. Still a good buy though.

If you want to fabricate with steel, then this is your bible.
